View Full Version : Call From the Marines

At around 10 tonight I got a phone call. I picked it up, thinking it was my sister or somethin (Would've used caller ID, but it needs batteries). So he says he from the Marines, and we start talking, blah blah blah...I had nothing better to do. Anyway, he asked if I was interested in the Marines. I said no. He asked a few other questions, like medical stuff, SAT's, height, weight, age (I'm 17, and he asked me if I was married. Idiot.) Anyway, he asks about my plans after school and all that stuff, and I tell him I'm accepted to a tech. school. It went on with questions for about 10 minutes, and he tried as hard as he could to convince me to join, but I said no.
Anywho, I tell my mom about the call after I get off the phone, and she's freaking out, saying I'm gonna be drafted and stuff. I know there isn't a draft, and I shouldn't be paranoid, but for some reason I still am. Anyone have any advice or info to help stop me from freakin' out? I'm not going into the army cuz of this stupid call, right?

You don't have much to worry about from that phone call. They call a lot of guys when they get close to 18, in fact you'd be hard-pressed to find someone that never got a phone call from them at that age. i'm sure you'll be hearing more from them too, but they're just trying to get more recruits.
Your mom needn't worry, the phone calls have nothing to do with any sort of draft.
But, there was talk not too long ago about reinstating a draft, i mentioned it here. (http://www.ronfez.net/messageboard/viewmessages.cfm/Forum/87/Topic/38334/page/Over_18__You_might_be_shipping_out_.htm) But these phone calls have nothing to do with that.

Is it advisable to spread out all the conveniences of culture before people to whom a few steps up a stair to a library is a sufficient deterrent from reading?

When I graduated high school, a few branches of the military called me. They just get the list of seniors from hevery HS and call them.

One of these guys called me a few years ago, I think from the Navy, and it took me forever to get off the line. It would have been quick if the guy let me tell him about my medical condition, but every time I tried he cut me off and went off on another tangent.

I got a call from both the Navy and Marines when I was 17. That was during the first gulf war. The marines were just giving me the line, but the Navy wanted me to take a test to see if I qualified for the NROTC program.
Now, I had no money for college, and this was weighing on my mind at the time, so I took the test. I passed and was accepted for the program. they started going over the stuff deal, sounded ok. I'd go in as an officer after 4 years of college. I'd do my 4 years in the navy than be on reserves for a number of years. But then I saw that if my GPA dropped below a certain level, I don't remember the number, I'd be dropped from the program, have to pay back the money or enlist as a regular crewman to pay it back. Fuck that. Plus I know me, I don't blindly follow orders. I'd get into trouble by asking why whenever they told me to do something. that happens even to this day.

You really ARE a humorless cockface...
Anyway, thanks for responding everybody. After I posted this, I forgot about it and went to sleep. The way my mom was acting made me start getting paranoid about it too, but after a night's sleep I didn't really care. I've considered whether or not I've wanted to go into the army before, and I figured that I'd rather start a career here rather than join up. I was just afraid I was being forced into something I didn't want to be in. But its ok now.
As for those tests, I took one about 2 months ago. The scores came back, but I never went to see what I got. And I think I have some medical conditions like hearing loss and anxiety that would keep me from joining up as it is.

I got a call like that once. I just hung right up on the guy.
Unfortunatley, shortly thereafter a smart bomb stuck my sandbox in the backyard and destroyed it.

Must not've been too smart, it missed. Besides, it could've been worse. You could have been part of a naked pyramid.

How could you be worried about ending up in the army when you were called by the marines?
Besides, if they were going to draft, they wouldn't be calling you asking if you'd like to join.

Nest time one of them calls, tell them that you are interested, but you have to run all decisions through your partner, Jorge. Let them know that as long as Jorge is fine with you joining up, you'd be more than happy to sign.
That should stop the calls.

Well not yet, but they are talking about reinstating the draft, and when they do it may cover both men and women, from the ages of 18 - 34.
Read this (http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_PrintFriendly&c=Article&cid=1083535813785&call_pageid=968332188854)
Additionally, a little-spoken of part of the "No Child Left Behind Act REQUIRES that schools turn over the contact information of male high school students, or risk losing Federal funding and be listed as a school "not meeting the educational requirements under the No Child Left Behind Act" even if they ARE teaching the kids adequately.
Read this (http://www.alternet.org/story.html?StoryID=14716) and then do a google search for "no child left behind" military for more articles on the subject.
At 17 you can join the military with consent of your parent, but I heard that now you can join without consent of a parent. I wasn't able to verify that particular rumor on the `net.
The only definite is that if you're a male in high school, your phone number is listed in the student directory and the school has a way to contact your parents, the military will eventually get your phone number. They are allowed to call and ask for you even if your parents object, and do not have to obey the laws pertaining to telephone solicitation once they have your phone number--so if your mom says "please put our number on your do-not-call list" they don't have to. The only way to opt out is to opt out BEFORE the recruiters get the phone number.
Go google it, and have a read. Very intresting stuff, and it managed to find it's way into a law that was supposed to make sure kids know how to read and write. The section involved is Section 9528 of the N.C.L.B. Act.

and ginny, way to educate.
No problem.
I've got three kids that could be affected by a draft and one boy who's phone number gets turned over to the military by his high school in one year.
Knowing my kids, they'll be the ones doing the thumb's up behind hooded prisoners.
Anyway, for news like that you need to make a habit of reading news online--specifically the Toronto Star and the BBC online. Don't bother looking too hard in the US press, it's going to be buried too far under Michael Jackson news and gossip about J-Lo's ass.
