Here in Westchester county, the tap water doesnt have that chlorine or rusty water taste. Alot of people have said if you live in the NYC metro area its considered to be the most drinkable water

I filter my water, then I boil it, then I run it through another filter, then I distill it.

This is kinda weird especially if you know the area, but Butler, NJ, home of more house painters per capita than any other town in America and such quality establishments as 'Bill's Air Conditioned Tavern and Packaged Goods' (Now called The Full Moon Saloon or somesuch (Cha-Ching ADF!)) has the best tasting tap water EVER! It tastes exactly like Poland Spring.

Its funny that you mention this. My whole family lives in newark. Everytime I go to my grandparents I drink the tap water. It is actually good. Then I come back to my apartment in madison, and it tastes like shit. I am a water snob sometimes, and will only drink poland spring water. I hate pelligrino and evian. I have only used a brita one time, and it was not to bad.

New York City's water comees from the Catskills. In th past, it came to us totally unfiltered by humans, i.e. it was naturally filtered by plant roots and microorganisms in the soil and all that. It was really fabulous.

Then it started getting polluted (as everything in nature seems to do eventually; humans are everywhere and it seems inevitable).

The water quality actually dropped below EPA standards because of all the sewage (yuck) fertilizers (cause overgrowth of algae = more dead stuff decaying in water & less live stuff to filter it) and pesticides (yuck) that were running off into it.

The choices were to invest 6-8 billiion dollars into making water purification plants (plus 300 million/year to keep them running) to clean the water OR to just stop polluting the water.

New York State actually made the smart decision and dcided to invest 1-1.5 billion dollars into buying land in the catskills to protect the watershed. They also instated regulations such that developers now have to pay the state if their developments degrade the water.

So what we've got i a bunch of really nice "wild" land up in the Catskills for people (and wildlife) to enjoy (to me that would be the greatest benefit), we've got developers building upstate in an ecologically consciou manner, we've got great water in NYC, we don't have ugly water purification plants all over the place, and most importantly (to most people): NYC has saved BILLIONS of dollars.

And who said nature wasn't important??

I live in Suffolk and I drink my tap water, too, but it's bad.
Some people say it's bad for you and there i some evidence (increased cancer rates etc.) to support that, and nevermind that, it just tastes bad.

when i lived in norther VA it was kind of chlorine flavored. florda water just tastes like fire and brimstone... liquified hell. you can smell the sulphur when you turn on the shower here...really its pretty foul. a britta filter helps, but those who have the means (obviously not me) get a whole house filter/softener system. dare to dream.

i did once refill a water bottle from the fountain in the DC armory while i was all fuckered up at an ultraworld party...tasted fine then, but the next day (semi-sober) it was the worst tasting metallic flavor ive ever encountered.

Well, its a different topic for discussion, but given the cancer rates of where I, and I am guessing where many of you live, is Well above the national average. Jersey is/ has been Big Casino Central.

Whole bunch of factors play into that besides the H2O we ingest from the tap; but experience at NOAA and some other places suggests our Ocean water Sucks.

And the New York Bight and Port Newark? 400 years of poluution sitting down there, and they want to dredge it. And the golden days of clean water may have ceen from fresh, but NY and Boston harbors, well before the US was the US, levied Heavy fines, including Forfeiture of Vessel, if caught polluting the Harbors, it got so bad.

1. Dredging can work. See the example of Foundry Cove. Current research is suggesting that a lot of the cadmium resistant strains of infaunal invertebrates are reverting back to being more similar to "normal" strains.

2. The water in the New York Bight is surprisingly clean (this is what I research so I'm somewhat familiar with it). It is clean enough to support oysters (which haven't lived in the polluted waters of the Hudson for like a century). Two years ago I found one wild oyster in my research; last year there were 4, though 3 of them died after growing to about an inch and a half long. It is also clean enough to support griblbles and teredos - littl critters that eat wood. They eat wood so voraciously that the previously "safe" wood of pilings and houseboats in the New York Bight are now being devoured. New York Harbor is pretty much going to be entirely replaced - with something other than wood :)

Yeah Too Cute i agree on the dredging, i'm just wondering what the heck has been sitting down in all that silt. I hear they have to dredge it for the Container Vessels [the new Super-Huge ones] to have enough depth. Yer reading my mind: Cadmium and those heavy metals; this Metyl Mercury and Tuna thing has me not psyched; when they're telling pregnant women to limit tuna intake.

Bad news for the Dolphins, I say!

And yeah the water seems to be ok. The cancer rates around here; I would guess, are more about airborne crap we breathe and other stuff not so much the water.

Money isn't the issue with the scanner...it's getting a new computer first. The one I have now is over five years old, and it's pretty much a bust trying to hook new software/hardware that's been made in the last 2 years or less into to it.

I've got the one I want laid out for about $800, so I should have that by the end of the summer.

If that falls through, I'll let you know...but I really appreciate the help.
