My wife and I had pretty differing upbringing, she in Princeton, NJ and I was from upstate NY -trailor people. We're 3 years apart, Generation X (if you're born after 1980, you're not gen-x) She never heard of an 8-track, wouldn't know what one even looks like. Got me thinking:

So much of our daily terminology stems from the technology we use in our homes. As an early 30-something, we grew up in a time when CD's first came out, a world pre-internet and pre-cable tv. There are some terms totally lost on kids today.

Examples?

Vertical Hold - when was the last time you heard that in a conversation?

Buying an "album".
Adjusting the "rabbit ears" on the television to get a "UHF" station.
Having a "hi-fi" stereo with "quadrophonic" sound.

how about when making a mix tape required 3 or 4 days next to the radio with your hand on the play/record button instead of just going to kazaa and downloading the stuff in 20 minutes.

Fleetwood Mac.

I went to an advertising party two weeks ago and Fleetwood Mac closed out the show. When they were introduced a girl close by asked, very loudly, "Who the hell is Fleetwood Mac?" Granted she was 20 something, I still found it hard to believe she had no idea.

Heres one that has Shocked many a convenience store or retail cashier into a stunned Even-More Silence:

Thanks a lot

especially when delivered actually looking the person in the eye and with some measure of enthusiam, if not conviction, an act of active engagement for some, a threat for others.

I don't thank cashiers because I'm not that grateful that I have to hand cash over to them. I will, however, implore them to "Have a good one."

Remember rolling down the windows in the car? Using that arm with the little knob thing on the end and not just pushing a button? Those were the days.

This whole notion that nobody uses the term "album" anymore is a farce and a lie.

EVERYONE still says "album." Anyone who says I'm going to get the "new CD by so-and-so" doesn't actually exist. I always hear, "did you get the new album by so-and-so?"

"Album" is a general term for the new musical collection put out by a commercial musical artist. Plenty of people still say it. Hell, I'd say more people say THAT than actually use the terms "record" (Actually applicable to nobody buying vinyl anymore) or "CD" in that context.

Goddamn dirty liars.

two my father still uses: Icebox instead of refrigerator and clicker for remote. In true, I use that one too.

He also refers to the keyboard as a typewriter. I don't think most kids have ever seen a typewriter.

Anyone remember when TVs had tubes? My dad would run to the local Radio Shack to test them!

Oh, and God forbid you turned the dial on the TV too fast! Then you were rendered using a pair of plyers to turn the channels (all 7 of them).

I used to spend days requesting all the songs i wanted to put on to a tape from 106.3.

They actually knew my first name by the time my collection was complete.

I think record is still a viable word. My band played two record release shows in April (one was an actual 7" vinyl record release).

But I will use the term CD or disc, or new one. Or shit. All those terms can be used. I call it my CD collection. Or I need some new CDs.

And I but vinyl, damn it: Full-lengths, 7"s, picture discs, 10"s, 5"s even.

Bulletin Board System (BBS)

No one knows that they are anymore unless you were actually on them. I used to dial them up all the time and play loads of door games like LORD and BRE. The internet came along and completely destroyed them all.
