Linda traveled over 20 blocks, including a walk through a railroad switching yard, to get to her third grade class at her school in Topeka. Her father Oliver watching this, finally had enough. He watched Linda walk right past the nearby school on her way to school. The school nearby had much nicer resources, was much closer, and Oliver wanted what was best for his daughter. The daughter was confused, why do we have to go 20 blocks to a school when there's a real nice one 5 blocks away? And why did many of her summer playmates go the other way each year when school started? So Oliver Brown took Linda Brown by the hand and went to the nearby school to enroll her, and was refused for being the wrong race.
Oliver Brown sued. Fifty years ago today, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in the Browns' favor. "Seperate educational facilities are inherintly unequal" and told them to integreate the school 'with all deliberate speed'. That last sentence, to many, meant sometime in the 27th century, or later.
