"We're celebrating the fact that they've come into their own as a Jewish adult, that they're able to embrace Judaism and make it a meaningful part of their life. The party is almost incidental to that."

bull-fucking-shit. i worked a many bar mitzvah and bat mitzvah(which aren't even a real fucking thing) when i worked at the vanderbilt on li.

and let me tell you, working a 1/4 of a mil party had very little to do with religion, and more about throwning around wealth. and many more i've worked were about teens getting drunk/ partying, which made huge problems.

this is it, when i worked a conservitive bar mitzvah party, and had the rabbi come behind the bar and closet the liquor that wasn't kosher, the patrons were pissed. it's not about religion, it's about a party. 1st communion is lame and non jews are thrying to find a way to party. what's the big deal?

I agree, and for me, the 'Typical American White Dress and Groomsmen and Receiving Line etc' Wedding is just as bad.

to derail for a minute, ronnie put it best, "if marriage is so sanctified, why is it so easy to get divorsed?"

and to quote chris rock, "if gay peeople want to get married, and share in the misery of marrige, what's the problem?"

i'm paraphrasing regarding gay marriage, but it;s the same shit. religion is so watered down.

When you're 13/14 you're prolly getting an 8th grade graduation party to begin with. Don't be spoiled little dicks. You're already one up on the rest of the 13 year olds in this country, you've got your fucking club, now go play in it.

Oh, to be a kid today. Remember, those Christian kids (Ok, the girls) are going to be demanding their "Sweet 16" parties as well.

Plus the 8th grade graduation, dance, and the Junior & Senior Prom (some schools even have Sophmore Socials, little mini-proms to make Mom & Dad go apeshit crazy) the senior class trips, the prom night festivities...

It's a wonder parents have money left over for education.

I totally agree with this. I think it must be awesome to be a kid these days. Somehow kids of today seem a lot more miserable then when I was a kid. Not that it was a picnic when I was a kid, but it sure does seem that every other week there's some sort of milestone that my niece and nephew are achieving that requires another party for them. I can't remember one single party for me, except for maybe a birthday party or a H.S. graduation party, but aside from that was all I got. I turned out fairly fine I think.

For example, my nephew is graduating from grade school to high school and my sister is throwing this bash for him and I don't get it. I remember it feeling nice to be going to high school, but there was no party for me when that happened. I just went to high school the following year. Is it really so common?

Its all bullshit! I dont know how or when it started or if it is a religious thing, but the Sweet 16 party, the party for graduating from grade school to high school, the getting the kid a brand new BMW for graduating high school is absolutely insane. All combined, that means that a girl, for simply living up to the point that she graduates high school gets at least $50,000 worth of attention to celebrate making it into semi adulthood. I see it in my sister in law, who kind of forces this idea into everyones heads, that the kid will get picked on or that it somehow reflects poorly on the parents if they do not shower the kids with extravagant gifts like this, and it really needs to stop. I dont know how, but if we arent carefull, this is going to just keep getting worse. I swear to god if I ever have a child, they will get nothing like this, I dont care what pressure I get, it has to stop.
Im not saying this to be a cheap fuck either, just that it is better to teach the kids that this extravagance is immature to expect. No wonder parents are going broke! All that money could have gone towards college for the kid.

There's alot of work and preperation that goes into a Bar Mitzvah. You study for months (and even years) to get to the point where you can get up and be Bar Mitzvahed. The party is a big celebration to commemorate it. Admittedly, the party is fairly ancillary and alomost independent of the bar mitzvah itself.

But reading that article, I was thinking the same thing as Ginny. When I graduated from JHS/HS, graduation parties were in someone's backyard, not some big multi-thousand dollar shindig. It was a bbq, radio, maybe a swimming pool...

I'm amazed at these fucking galas that parents are throwing for their kids for every milestone. For my communion and confirmation, we just had immediate family members over. For graduations, we had parties at the house...BBQ, swimming, etc. Lots of fun. For our sweet 16 bdays, we just had friends over. I did have a DJ, but it was one of my friends.

In my day, you were lucky to get a halmark card and a pat on the back. Freaking Jews, just having to show up everyone.
