Arab-Americans Fear Backlash
By DEBORAH KONG, AP Minority Issues Writer

A day after suspected terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, Arab-American, Muslim and Sikh leaders reported sporadic vandalism and assaults against their communities.

Mosque windows were shattered in Texas, a New York man was arrested for an alleged anti-Arab threat, and a prison fight broke out over Muslim slurs in Washington state.

``I'm urging people not to play into the hands of the terrorists, not to act like them,'' said Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Washington, D.C.

The prime suspect for the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, authorities said, was Osama bin Laden (news - web sites), a wealthy Saudi fugitive who authorities have blamed for several past terrorist attacks.

In Suffolk County, N.Y., authorities arrested a man who allegedly made an anti-Arab threat and pointed a handgun at a gas station employee.

In Texas, at least six bullets shattered windows at the Islamic Center of Irving. A window at the Islamic Center of Carrollton also was broken by a slingshot-type device, police said.

Authorities there and in several other jurisdictions said they were unsure whether the threats were related to the terrorist attacks.

In Asbury, N.J., Ramandeep Singh, a Sikh who wears a turban for religious reasons, said he had garbage and stones thrown at his car and stayed home from work.

In a Washington state prison, a fight broke out during television reports of the attacks. A sheriff's spokesman said that one inmate loudly criticized Muslims and then a Muslim inmate threw him to the floor, causing cranial hemorrhaging.

At the Kuwait Embassy in Washington, Tamara Alfson spent Wednesday counseling frightened Kuwaiti students attending schools across the United States. One student was told, ``You should all die,'' Alfson said. Another was moved to avoid a harassing bus ride to class.

Hate messages and insults were left on the answering machine of the Manassas Mosque in Virginia, said director Abu Nahidian.

Muslims in Oklahoma City said motorists made obscene gestures outside the Islamic Society of Greater Oklahoma City, said Suhaib Webb, imam of the center's mosque.

``We have no more to do with Osama bin Laden than you do,'' said Sheryl Siddiqui, a member of the board of the Islamic Society of Tulsa, Okla. ``He certainly doesn't represent Islam, and we're just devastated.''

In Virginia, an Islamic bookstore was vandalized in Old Town Alexandria, and officials at two Virginian mosques reported vandalism and threatening phone calls.

About a dozen members of the Muslin community in Tampa, Fla., urged friends and relatives on Wednesday to donate blood, heeding calls by blood banks for donations for victims of the terrorist attacks.

``We're suffering all ways - as Muslims, as Americans,'' Fatima Hussain said.

American Airlines chief executive Don Carty echoed community leaders in urging Americans not to scapegoat entire ethnic and religious communities because of ``our collective grief, anger and shock.''

In a recorded hot line message to airline workers, he said: ``We simply cannot do that. Muslims and Arabs are our co-workers and our customers - and they grieve over this tragedy as well.'' </i>

The people doing these attacks need to get a reality check. These people are all american citizens trying to earn a buck like you and I. These aren't the terrorists, but people of Muslim faith. What are they going to next, destroy all their Cat Stevens albums? Are people going to destroy his stuff now because the man is a devout Muslim? Are they going to start attacking all of the Black & White converters to the Muslim Religion? These people are working on pure emotion, but its being directed towards no-one of any ties to the atrocities of yesterday. They probably think they're doing something good, but all they're doing is putting people into chaos when we should all be banding together towards the common goal of saving lives of the trapped and harnessing your anger by enlisting if you feel inclined to do so. Ignorant stuff like these attacks sicken me. Even though I was in 6th grade at the time, I remember during the Gulf War hearing hearing about & seeing Arabs being ridiculed and seeing some being attacked for no reason by the ignorant of every other nationality. I even saw kids in school doing it & it just irritated me that they would do this to some of the people we all grew up with. I hope people come to their senses and stop this.

No reliable news source has reported on these alleged celebrations in NJ. You know they would report it if it were even remotely true.

Arabic Americans were surely killed in the attacks. The terrorists responsible represent a miniscule fraction of islamic people.

Our nation was founded on a principle of tolerance and that is our greatest strength. That is what will help us overcome this tragedy.

Dan you're smart enough to know that in times like this you don't need a legitimate news source to tell you anything. all you need is some guy saying "hey did you hear what they did over there" and patriotic fury whips up an ass kicking smoothie. When people want revenge and aren't satisfied they take revenge in anyway they can. Shoot 'em all, let God sort 'em out

Sunny, I have to say that some types of racial profiling is necessary.
Do we seek out Italian mobsters in Harlem? No. Do we look for Black Panthers in Utah? No.
Most whites use powder cocaine. Most blacks use crack. That is fact. We have to get over the sensitivity and realize that some profiling is necessary. If the FBI is seeking an Arab terrorist, they will be checking names like Abdul and Farook, not Sven or Seamus. It's sad, but it is reality.

I did hear that the footage of them rejoining was for a completely different reason. I'm not sure how true it is though.

Confrontation Fueled by Grief Ends in a Beating and Regrets
By Michael Leahy
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, September 18, 2001; Page B01

It was a difficult week to be Mustafa Nazary, Afghan expatriate and proud American citizen. He cried Tuesday while watching the World Trade Center crumble on TV, wondering what awaited him outside his home in Falls Church. The next day, he heard Howard Stern, whose radio show he loved, calling for nuclear strikes on Arab countries.

Stern's harsh words left the 33-year-old Nazary shaken, but over the next few days his fears eased. By the time he climbed into his bakery delivery van Friday morning, he felt serene again.

About the same hour, Michael Wayne Johnson, of Temple Hills, set out on his own delivery route. Life was "tough," he often said. At 49, he had little money and few prospects for improving on his $6.75-an-hour job delivering auto parts. Divorced, he shared a two-bedroom apartment with his ailing mother.

Friday afternoon found both men driving through Alexandria on Edsall Road, each listening to a radio rebroadcast of President Bush's remarks at Washington National Cathedral shortly before.

Neither knew that in about five minutes they would come together in a parking lot, where the 350-pound Johnson would deliver a brief but painful pounding to the 160-pound Nazary. The next day, Johnson would be arrested on assault and hate-crime charges. With a friend's help, he posted his bail of $5,000 and is expected in court this Friday for an arraignment hearing.

What provoked the confrontation is in dispute. Nazary says Johnson pulled up alongside him, asked if he was Afghan and then said, "I'm gonna kill you," following him to a nearby parking lot. Johnson insists that it was Nazary who uttered an incendiary threat, leaving police to turn to witnesses to try to figure out what really happened in the lot on Van Dorn Street.

Was it genuine hate or a profound cultural misunderstanding, exacerbated by the week's tension and paranoia, that fueled one or both men's rage?

In the minutes before the altercation, Johnson remembers pictures unspooling in his mind of the carnage at the World Trade Center and Pentagon -- of falling bodies, doomed people murmuring into cell phones and the mounds of smoking rubble where the crushed were entombed. He couldn't get the searing images out of his head.

It was a bad patch in the life of the United States and of Mike Johnson, who decided to show his patriotism that day by wearing a red, white and blue sports shirt with his jeans.

Mustafa Nazary, who came to the United States at age 12 and became a citizen in 1990, also wanted to trumpet his love for the United States that day, so he put two small U.S. flags in the windows of his van. The one on the driver's side kept falling down. Disappointed, he gave up on affixing it.

He turned onto Edsall Road about the same moment as Johnson. He recalls Johnson's pickup truck pulling alongside the van and the stranger behind the wheel motioning to him repeatedly.

Even on Friday, with the United States reeling and many Muslims apprehensive after a wave of reported hate crimes across the nation, Nazary's instinct was to say hi when the other driver called to him.

American men did that often. Just shouted out at you. Duuuuude. What's happenin', man? Big, friendly lunks, yelling. It was what Nazary loved

It's really sad Sunny, and the only thing we can do is speak out against the hatred and bigotry. A National crisis brings out the best in us, but sadly with some it brings out the worst. My prayers go out to my Middle Eastern friends.

I understand we are all in mourning right now and we are the most vunerable we can be, but we have to be on our toes at all times and be careful around ANYONE, not just Arabs. It's so wrong to "group" all Arab-Americans into one classification. I've seen plenty of them locally, mourn at this catastrophe. We are a mixture of all different ethnicities, but once you enter and step on American soil and become a United States citizen, we are united as one nation, not divided. My prayers go out to all "innocent" ethnic people.

There is a presumption of innoncence, but the aura of guilt hangs over the head of many.

One of my friends told me of a Muslim in her class who cheered dring an assembly when the kids were told what happened to the WTC

He mysteriously and deservedly got the crap beaten out of him during recess.

Any animal who maintains such sentiments about the death of thousands should be treated in this regard.

Then there was a program on channel 7, I beleive where they gathered every ethnic stereotype they could think of into a room and asked them how they felt about the WTC. A Muslim girl of about 10, in full regalia (used by Muslim men for oppressing the women of their culture) said something along the lines of, "I'm a Muslim and I'm sad about what happpened. The Koran doesn't say anything about Jihad towards America. We wish no ill to America. Just Jihad against the Jews." The camera quickly cut away from her.

I hope she had the crap beaten out of her too.

Personally, I'm offended by the terms, Arab-Americans, African-American, Italian-Amercian, Jewish-American, Hispanic-American, etc.

The word is American, plain and simple. Any other term just causes divisiveness at a time when unity is required.
