American Airlines has an good history with fleet maintenance, and mediocre where security is concerned.

you'll be fine.

Besides the obvious explanation that airplanes are much safer than ground travel, I must highly recommend AA. I don't know why you think death and destruction. The only case of an AA accident (caused by malfunction of the plane) I can think of is the Rockaways in Novemeber 2001, and that was a smaller "Eagle" flight. American actually has a very good record and I have flown with them almost exclusively my whole life. I can't say enough good things about them.

Actually, it was an Airbus A300, which isn't exactly "small." I believe a faulty stabilizer/rudder was found to play a part in the accident, and all other Airbuses were checked to make sure their rudders were "airworthy."

I actully flew on an AA Airbus just a couple months after the accident, and it's probably the best flight I've ever been on. Nice comfy seats, plenty of leg room, and nifty li'l TV screens at every seat. Plus they let you have the whole can of soda! :)

DW, I've flown at least 120 times in my life, and I'm still terrified each time I go up in the air. Statistically speaking, however, if anyone should be dead from a plane crash, it's me, and I clearly am not, so fly with confidence!

Nothing to worry about. I'm flying above this great country almost daily, and I can assure you this: the chances of something going wrong are very small. Everyone from the pilots, cabin crew, maintenance, baggage handlers, and yes, even the gate agents are all highly trained and qualified. Unfortunately, the TSA and Security are another story. Take care and enjoy the ride.

AA is a very good airline. The mechanics and flight crews as well as ground crews are top notch. My cousin flew for them for over 30 years and never had accident nor did he crash the plane. Just sit back get drunk and have wonderful time.

you have two choices: Castration or a one way ticket to New York

If by TSA you mean the screeners, then you're right, they are lacking in several respects. But the TSA is larger than just screeners, don't lump everyone in with them.

And please don't put the baggage agents and ramp rats in with pilots and gate agents. highly trained? on paper maybe. most of the thefts in an airport are committed by baggage handlers. And I've found they often don't follow or even remember the most basic tenets of SIDA training.

I'm terrified of flying, have only done it 5 times. However, I did make the plane ride to Puerto Rico. We left from Kennedy and its a short flight. You'll get on the plane, they'll put a crappy movie on and before you know it, you will be landing at beautiful Luis Munoz Marin International Airport. The weather will be amazing and you will be able to smell the sweet rum drinks in the air.

Now that we're on the subject, what's the steel drum situation in Puerto Rico? Can I get one? Are they cheap? And can I have it shipped back to the US?

Gina,

I just got back from Toronto on AA and it was totally fine. I'm a freak about flying. YOu can just ask Tazz 'bout what a wreck I was flying to P.R. last year. It was fine though, I felt very secure. I didn't leave from Newark, I left from LaGuardia, but no worries and you'll have a blast in P.R.

Oh man, I can't STAND Jet Blue. They have you fly in and out of some of the ghetto-est airports in the country, the security of their check-in service is next to nil (Last time I flew with them I was given the boarding pass of someone with a COMPLETELY different name from mine, and this is after the woman behind the desk was looking me up with my driver's license in her hand), and their planes are the very definition of "meat-packing." If you get anything other than an aisle seat, you'd better be less than five-foot-six, or hope you have a REAL short flight, because otherwise you're in for some agony. Compound that, I've yet to have a pilot with them where it doesn't feel like their landings aren't them just throwing the plane at the ground.

They're like ValuJet with a color scheme. Fuck them.

actually, that's no longer a concern since all passengers are subjected to screening as well as all of their property accessable and inaccessable. It only would have been a problem if you were a selectee.

And since you mentioned ValuJet, don't fly AirTran. It IS valujet with a diffrent color scheme.

It still could have been a mess, considering it was a red eye flight out of Long Beach, and the only one to DC for 48 hours, and the plane was fully booked, AND they were letting standby's on by the time the guy whose name was on the ticket showed up and wanted his seat.

DEATH TO JET BLUE!

Not to start a war, but AirTran is a great outfit. Totally different ops since the Valujet days. Great company to work for, great company to fly on.

take 2 mg of xanax, or just 1 mg if you dont usually take them on aregular basis for anxiety/sleep disorder.......you'll be like ..."weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee as you take off!"
although you may end up having NO MEMORY of flight afterwards ( sometimes has that effect ) and also bring munchies,,,,,,,they make me crave junkfood, then ALL IS RIGHT W/ THE WORLD........
