This is the first I am hearing of this although it does not surprise me. Apparently we really did come thisclose to WWIII in the early 80's and all this guy had to do was push a button. He didn't, and it seems that you really could say that he saved the world.

The Man Who Saved the World Finally Recognized (http://www.mosnews.com/feature/2004/05/21/petrov.shtml)

Global Disaster Averted (http://www.worldcitizens.org/forgottenhero.html)

Remember the days when the USSR was the only bad guys we really worried about? Ronnie Regan and Gorbachev scolwing at each other?

We're all lucky that Stanislav Petrov was on duty that day.

Having read this article, I can't understand why this man is considered a "hero". If anything, he is a traitor...at best, an incompetent baffoon!!! I would not want this man in my military machine!!! He did not follow orders or protocol. He could have cost his country inumerable casualties if this had been a real attack. Thank God the Commies had people like this on their side and that our patriots would follow orders to the letter!!!!!!!!
