Sorry to start a new thread but I have a couple of problems I can't seem to fix.

First, I keep getting an error message that says "Exploere has caused an error in ~5151535160.tmp Explorer will now close"

Second, my Window Media Player won't work. When I double click on the icon or a sound file nothing happens.

I'd appreciate any suggestions.

what OS do you have?

EDIT:

reason being i've found proceesses that started with the squiggly line and you don't need them. If it's XP Pro do a chtl/alt/delete and look at the 'running processes'. I had found several starting with the squiggly line and they were taking up to 40% cpu and i wasn't doing anything but looking at the process window.

If you find them you can select them and 'end process' Then you will need to go to the command line and type in 'msconfig' This should bring up a window with tabs and go to the 'startup' tab. I found these squiggly line processes in the startup so i unchecked them and rebooted. I got the system to start without starting these processes. Then i did a search on any file or folder with this squiggly line process name and it found it and then i deleted the folder.

Always make sure you delete from your recycle bin afterwards.

I was unable to get rid of these squiggly line things with Adaware. Not sure what they are it seems Adaware doesn't think they are bad...

Also: when you cntl/alt/delete and look at your processes you sometimes see several EXPLORERS.

Keep the capitalized EXPLORER and 'end process' on the rest...

EDIT #2 - after ending the other 'explorer' processes, run Adaware. It seemed to find these 'fake' explorer things.

then again that's if you have XP Pro

I had a similar problem with Media Player...basically I just downloaded the latest version and re-installed it and everything was hunky-dory.

Sometimes when I've had my computer on for a few days straight and I've used it alot, nothing happens when I click on icons. A reboot usually does the trick.

my windows media player also stopped working. goto Microsoft.com and get the latest version and install it. this will solve the problem. Also, run ad-aware to get rid of the first problem.

Every new prob can have its own thread. Different issue, different topic.

I appreciate the suggestions -- thanks everyone.

Just a couple of questions though:

1) Could someone explain Adaware. How do I get it -- how do I run it? Forgive my ignorance.

2) My MICROSOFT Windows Player works fine but the WINDOWS Media Player doesn't. Will downloading a new version of the latest version affect the other?

Thanks again.

Lavasoft's Ad-Aware (http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/) generally works like Spybot S&D, but it will search for corrupt and dirty files in your computer better than Spybot. Some things it comes up with are not always bad so you should always look at the results before you clear.

I don't understand what your problem with Windows Media Player is, but you should try downloading the latest version from http://www.windowsmedia.com

Speaking of Spybot, I have been trying for over a month now to get an Update, but there never seems to be any new updates. Does something happen to it once and a while that prevents the updates from coming through? Like an expiration or something?

If you have Ad-Aware, just dump Spybot off of your computer. You don't need it anymore and it's just taking up space.

I heard that one catches stuff the other doesnt, thats why I had them both. Its the same with Norton Antivirus, I also have AVG to catch stuff Norton misses

Every time I've run Spybot after Ad-Aware it found nothing. And then sometimes I'd run Spybot first, it would say there was nothing, and then Ad-Aware would find a bunch of "problem" files two seconds later. Plus the update problems like you said, plus that Spybot was conflicting with programs on my comp...I say ditch it.

Norton, too. It's so overrated. I use AVG...it's just as effective, and works much more smoothly with my system.

I've actually found the opposite with the Ad-Aware - SpyBot scenario, Mojo. That being said, there are so many different adware, spyware, and malware killers out there, most of them with some degree of free usage, that you have plenty to choose from. And I've had the same deal with the SpyBot updates, I was actually gonna post it to see if anyone knew what the deal was. I guess we'll just have to wait.

Ad-Aware updates their downloads and reference files usually at least 2-3 times a week, whereas I don't think I got an update offa SpyBot for a good two months before I pulled it off my computer.

Oddly enough, the amount of pop-ups I've had dropped to none once I trashed Spybot. I just don't trust it.

I have a similar problem ( I posted it in the Off Topic boards), I notice a bunch of files starting with the ~ in my WINDOWS/TEMP folder. this may sound retarded, but how much harm would it be if I were to go into safe mode and delete all the contents of that folder? WOuld tht solve my problem?

BTW the OS i'm using is ME (yeah it's old, but it worked with no problems until now)
