I lost everything I ever wrote when I rebooted windows. I saved it to a disc and then when I tried to bring it up it wouldn't open. It's all gone. Every single thing I ever wrote in recent history. That was the one thing I took pride in and now it's all gone. It sucks so much...

Keith, did you re-install windows or re-boot? 2 TOTALLY different things. Also, what kind of disk are they on, and what does it say when you try and open it now?

There are services that can restore lost data from hard drives. They're very expensive, but if the data is important enough to you, you should consider it.

I had that happen to me once, when I went from Windows 3.11 to Windows 95 I decided to do an upgrade as opposed to formatting and reinstalling. Something got completely messed up in the process and I ended up losing everything I had. At that point I was working for a printing and graphic design company and I lost every single design I had made for clients. A lot of which I had to re-create, it was a major pain. Especially because I couldn't tell my boss that. To make matters worse, I had backed up everything prior to the install onto a tape drive, only to find out after that Windows 95 did not support the drive and the company that made the drive had sold it to HP and there wouldn't be any more drivers made for it. I suppose I could have formatted and put 3.11 back on though I was still a little new to computers at the time so I didn't do it. I had to live and learn.

That sucks. Something similar happened to me, however, it was so far in the dark ages, I lost an actual journal with about 3 years worth of stuff in it. Kerouac and some of his buddies actually used to burn stuff they had written so that it wouldn't influence the next thing they wrote. Maybe its for the best.

Sorry to hear it, Keith.
I had it happen to me second year of college, and it ended up being the best thing that ever happened to my writing. I was holding on to WAY too much shit I thought was "genius" that I wrote when I was a teenager.

1. Not everything was about death, and being upset and all of that stuff. A lot of it, most of it was, but not all. And when I did tlak about being upset it was done in a witty way.
2. Nothing I have is great. A monkey could probably write better things then me. But what I wrote was important to me. They were my own shitty works. Not anyone elses. I took pride in the fact I had compiled over 90 works that all had a special meaning to me.
3. The thing that kill's me most is that I lost the 'novel' I was working on. I didn't have a lot done, the whole first chapter though, and I was so proud of it.
I guess I'm just going to have to start over. Learn from experience I guess.

if the bible has taught us anything:
Jesus and Satan had been arguing about who was the best programmer. After listening to this for entirely too long, God decided to end it once and for all. He called them together and announced that there would be a programming contest. Each would have one hour to produce the most impressive program they could come up with. God would then judge the results.
The day came, they sat down and started coding. Jesus invoked his favorite editor, emacs. Satan fired up edt. They coded furiously for 50 minutes, then the power failed. It comes back on a minute later, and they both rebooted their systems and started typing again.
When the hour was up, God asked them to stop. He asked Satan to show him his work. Satan complained bitterly about the power outage and had nothing useful to show for his work. God turned to Jesus, who had completed his task, and demonstrated it for all to see. Satan was outraged and asked how this could be.
God smiled and said, "Surely everyone knows that Jesus saves".
i feel yer pain, i just lost three years and some 90 gigs worth of data .... 80 of those gigs was music (all legal), but i wiss the other ten gigs of artwork, documents and pics ....
i backed up all the non-music files, but it just really sucks to re-format (or customize) the p.c. al over again ...
its almost like losing everything your apartment: if you're lucky, you have insurance or bought exact duplicates and kept it in storage, then you have to re-decorate, setup and basically start all over again ...
it just all sucks ...

If you have Windows, did you check your Windows/Temp folder by any chance to see if there's any fragments of the files there that might be able to salvage? Take a look, it's worth a shot.

Keith sorry to be the spelling nazi but i glanced at your blog, and my pet peeve
your; the posessive pronon, being used for
you're; the contraction of you are.
and now I will quote samuel clemens: 'Sad is the Man who can only find one way to spell a word'
Dont sweat your first chapter; if it was really complete; its still in you. Will it back and spit it back out.
I have a home recording studio. I set up a patch; the recorder, levels, eq, compression, click track, get myself psyched to play, and hit record, and maybe that third take, i NAIL it, i mean nine minutes of a rhythm pattern in 5/8, done live coz i dont believe in loops. and then i sit back, so satisfied, Id rehearsed for hours and finally nailed it:
and i look over and see i didnt really hit the 'record'. None of it made it anywhere but my ears. gone. phfffft. I used to get upset. Just does nothing.

Mike, sorry. I think when I typed that I was typing quick. I usally catch grammatical errors.
I remember part of the first chapter, so I'll start it up tonight. I guess things happen for a reason(some of the time)and maybe that meant that my writing was getting predictable and I needed to change it up.

oh geez Please no apologies, i feel horrible even mentioning it, and my spelling stinks on ice.
anyone else ever misspell a word, and you see the mistake, and you look down at the keys, and you go to yourself: Wow, that letter is nowhere NEAR the correct one. What the F?
dude, you have a blog. go for it. keep writing. its a discipline. the days you have absolutely nothing to write and dont wish to write, those are Exactly the days you Must write. If you have nothing start with the weather.

Keithy, next time try a more reliable way of backing-up. Floppy disks are by no way garenteed to save any of your data. A lot of times you'll think you formatted the disk, then you throw it in your floppy drive and BAM "this disk does not seemed to be formatted. Would you like to format it?"
