A person on Fark.com brought up a valid point about this all being a scare tactic used to re-elect Bush. It's still ludacris (sp?) to tell the public these things. "OK, we have some information, during the summer there is a chance there will be some attack somewhere, anyday, any hour, thank you and good day." Does that really count as any information at all? Why would they tell us that stuff unless they had the specifics, technically we could be attacked anytime so just saying that is redundant.

My uncle is a fireman here in NJ and he has been in extra training for this for weeks now. Has folders full of stuff regarding the terrorists attacks they are expecting.
They are expecting it to hit during the Republican convention in NYC. He told me that if he is working the day it happens we can consider him dead since he will be called into the city to help with rescue efforts.
They are worried about containment.. about what to do with everyone who is infected, since it is a bio attack they are expecting. They don't know what they are going to do or how they are going to handle it. They expect people just to jump in the river and try to swim to Jersey to escape the panic and the citywide lock down that is going to go into effect.
Looking through his folder he showed me from his training classes they are even preparing for the terrorists to attack with the Plague. Not sure how they would get their hands on the plague but they are seriously considering it as a possible weapon.
It's scary how everything he has been talking about for a few weeks now is all of a sudden in the news.

Do you mean "the Plague" as in the Black Death which wiped out a quarter of Europe in the 14th century? That was recently classified as an Ebola-like virus (which just had an outbreak in Kenya).
That would be bad.
I believe they will be hitting the subways in NYC. I have a very good source who works with the Feds and he told me that they have spotted "middle-eastern" men dressed as women (burkas, veils) observing the time shift changes in the NY subways. They also found empty suitcases in a few stations. He felt it may have been a dry run for a real attack.
This is stuff you will not hear on the news.
I have not put in vacation for the summer yet but August 30th through September 2nd looks damn good. That's the republican convention folks.
EDIT: The dry-run theory was in the news. It was the subway observations that was not. Dry-run story here: Dry run fears (http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/23505.htm)

In fact, it can be treated/cured with regular old antibiotics.
You still need to be hospitalized and quarantined and about 14% (1 in 7) of all plague cases in the United States are fatal.
Now imagine doing this for over a million people at the same time.

Yes, the bubonic plague, which "the plague" is commonly paired with, but I was mentioning that it really wasn't the bubonic plague that wiped out nearly everyone in the 14th century, it was an ebola-like virus.
But I realize that has nothing to do with this thread so I am now going to excuse myself and play with some rats.

the 14% includes UNTREATED patients. If antibiotics were given out soon enough, major catastrophe could be avoided (lucky me, I'm on doxycylcline already for a month).

all i'm saying is, plague is the least of our worries. its treated with doxycycline, which is not exactly in short supply. the PANIC that would come along with a plague attack would be worse than the actual disease.
I know when they were concerned about an attack on Indian Point and I was living 5 miles away, they came up with a pretty good and fast system where you could go into any pharmacy and get those pills that would protect your thyroid from radiation (like that would really help much).
Start talking ebola and I'll get a little more worried.
edit: didn't read the fact sheet, only the other info - 50-90% mortality rate if untreated, 15% treated

For you Virginia folks who live near Reston, your town was immortalized when what was thought to be an outbreak of ebola zaire oocurred in a building where they housed primates.
Long story short, it was ebola, but with *just* enough difference that it didnt make the leap from those promates to us, a seeming miracle when you see how close we are, on many levels.
So, they destroyed all of the animals, then attempted to destroy *every living thing* down to bacteria, in that building. They literally, if mem serves, wrapped the thing up air tight; and filled it with the nastiest kill everything known agents until all the cultures they sent in came back dead.
This was written up in the book 'The Hot Zone' by Richard Preston, and is one of the scariest books I ever read. When you turn it over you see a quote from Stephen King saying essentially the same thing; scariest thing he read in years, and its all true.

That book (along with the bastardized movie version: Outbreak) also imortialized my hometown of Frederick, MD. In fact, on the main US stories is of Nancy Jaxx, who was an army researcher at Ft. Detrick, working with Ebola infected primates, got out of the area and was decontaminating, when she noticed a hole in her protection suit. Thankfully they use several layers and the inner layer was not breeched and we were all saved from infection. Nancy's daughter Jaime was in my grade in high school (she's mentioned brefly in the book). Jaime also went to Penn State with me, as was on the diving team. She injured her shoulder one year and needed surgery and couldn't drive home, so her friend drove her car, I drove her friend's car and her mother (Nancy) was also in the string of cars going back to MD. So I met Nancy Jaxx--who is the basis of Rene Russo's character in Outbreak, and has a bit of the Hot Zone about her).
Ft. Detrick is also in the news because they believe the Anthrax that was sent out post-9/11 came from there and have even drained a pond up in Catoctin Mountain looking for evidence.
Edit: there is one more story about Ft. Detrick (it's a pretty freaky place if you stop to think about, but I don't really), it was one of the last places to have Smallpox (stored somewhered supposedly safe). Well, it was accidentally set free and the closed the building that it was contained in. So for a long time the building has stood there (it was pretty tall--5 stories, maybe) empty. There were pleanty of urban legend-type stories that surrounded the building, like it was bricked-up immediately with a lot of people still inside, stuff like that. Creepy--the Stand style stories about it.

After the first wtc bombing back in the early 90's i had come up with an idea for a book and the story was about a hijacked airplane coming from Europe and crashing into NYC. Then there would be another and the President had to make the decision to shoot it out of the air. I told alot of people in work about my idea. It just seemed to me like something that could be very possible. I worked overnights from 9/10 into 9/11 in 2001 and awoke around 11:30 am to the radio 88 wcbs and the first things i heard were the WTC have been taken down by hijacked airplanes. It was an 'unlucky' guess.
Not that i'm predicting the future or have any capability at doing it but i get a strong feeling there will be a terrorist attack at a Yankee game. One of them weekend games where there is a packed house. Gotta figure with the WTC they killed approx 4,000. There are 55k plus at a Yankee game.

This was actually portrayed in the X-Files spin off "The Lone Gunmen". The episode, which aired just a few months before 9/11, had a highjacked airplane headed right for the WTC. It was diverted at the last moment and ended up scraping the observation deck.

I was talking with this woman that I work with about this article I read a few years ago in a science magazine, like Popular science, and in the article they layed out a scenario where a guy is standing at the edge of a subway platorm unnoticed and drops a bottle containing a viral agent down into the tracks which shatters and as the train goes through the tunell, it kicks up the agent and disperses it in the air. Days later, people start getting sick and it is dicovered what happened, but by that time, its too late. It scared the hell out of her. I have been trying to think what they would do if that happened. How could they stop it or contain it? Would they seal off the subways and decontaminate it? How? Lets say it effected 1000 people. The panic from that would devistate the city, because people would panic and not want to go by subway, the streets would be clogged, mass transit would be overloaded, it would be a mess. This woman said that if that happened and wasnt effected, she would quit the job because she couldnt handle getting to and from work any other way and be in that situation.
By the way, this is what I read, so dont attack me for "giving them the idea" or whatever.

I forget which book it was but one of Tom Clancy's novels that came out about 10 years ago had a plot where terrorists rammed a hijacked plane into the Capitol during a State of the Union address wiping out the entire government. Jack Ryan then became President as the most senior surviving government official.

Why is it that if they raise the threat level to orange, people will complain about how useless and retarded the system is. And when they DON'T raise the threat level to orange, people will complain that they should've.
Exactly.
If the government - or, in particular, this administration - knew about a threat and said nothing, and something DID happen, the response would be "you should have said something!"
When they DO give a warning, people complain that it's scaremongering or - and this is something unique to this website, because I haven't even seen this particularly absurd criticism brought up elsewhere - a tool to re-elect Bush.
Nice little catch-22 going on there.
Here's what everyone of you should be outraged about: Tom Ridge, the head of Homeland Security, heard about this warning.....guess when? Days ago? Weeks ago? Nope - first he heard about it was when Ashcroft held his little press conference.
It makes me want to bang my head against the wall - if these idiots should have learned ANYTHING from the 9/11 Commission hearings, it should be that lack of communication between agencies and the silly pissing contests between them have to be completely eliminated, otherwise we're just asking for another attack.

People's complaints when the alert level is rasied is that they give no specific information. Do you know what to do when the threat level is raised? The warnings given when the threat level is raised are so vague that people think anything can happen at anytime anywhere.
And yet, has there been any changes to the system? No. In this instance, we have Ashcroft rasing hell over crap. Now seeing what precipated his press conference, I am glad they didn't raise the threat level.

Isn't this grand?
Administration Freed Terror Suspect (http://customwire.ap.org/dynamic/stories/T/TERROR_SUSPECT_DEPORTED?SITE=NEKEA&SECTION=US&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT)
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Nabil al-Marabh, once imprisoned as the No. 27 man on the FBI's list of must-capture terror suspects, is free again. He's free despite telling a Jordanian informant he planned to die a martyr by driving a gasoline truck into a New York City tunnel, turning it sideways, opening its fuel valves and having an al-Qaida operative shoot a flare to ignite a massive explosion.
Free despite telling the FBI he had trained on rifles and rocket propelled grenades at militant camps in Afghanistan and after admitting he sent money to a former roommate convicted of trying to blow up a hotel in Jordan.
Free despite efforts by prosecutors in Detroit and Chicago to indict him on charges that could have kept him in prison for years. Those indictments were rejected by the Justice Department in the name of protecting intelligence. Even two judges openly questioned al-Marabh's terror ties.

I forget which book it was but one of Tom Clancy's novels that came out about 10 years ago had a plot where terrorists rammed a hijacked plane into the Capitol during a State of the Union address wiping out the entire government. Jack Ryan then became President as the most senior surviving government official.
Can't happen. One cabinet memeber is not at the State of the Union address, if you look cloesly. I think it may have even been Cheney in recent years.

I don't think the guy should have been released, but what do you want? When these guys AREN'T released you got people coming out of the woodwork to claim that we're imprisoning innocent people and violating their civil rights (like, say, Padilla?).

I'm sure it's probably SOP, but it's just a work of fiction. Besides - it's Jack fucking Ryan.

I want him in custody. It's obvious he's a threat.

Risk of radioactive "dirty bomb" growing (http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99995061)
In 2003, Eliza Manningham-Buller, director-general of the UK's counter-intelligence agency MI5, said a crude attack against a major western city was "only a matter of time".

You're so Monica Lewinski for Bush I think I'm actually going to miss you. So you're saying that this guy was released because of the political pressure the administration was getting from... who, exactly? You didn't happen to think "They Live" was a documentary about liberals being evil mind-controlling aliens did you?

I'll remember you fondly.
I know there's a place in that big, bleeding heart of yours for me as well. Remember to write me.

No, I haven't a clue why he was released, actually.
You didn't happen to think "They Live" was a documentary about liberals being evil mind-controlling aliens did you?
No, but now that you mention it, it makes sense.
And it DID have that bitchin' fight scene between Piper & Keith David.

Here is an excellent article on The Dirty Bomb distraction.
The biggest danger from radiological weapons is the misplaced panic that they would cause. (http://www.technologyreview.com/articles/wo_muller062304.asp)
Dirty bombs are not weapons of mass destruction, but weapons of mass disruption. Their success depends on public and government overreaction. Beware not radioactivity but nuclear panic. The main thing we have to fear from a dirty bomb is fear itself.
