View Full Version : Drugs/Booze at your High School?
Mike Teacher

A couple of threads got me thinking.
Yeah I know: beginner's Luck.
So: I'll cut right to the chase. We have a good range of ages and locations here. I was reading about Detox and some other stuff, and Keith still in school, and here it is.
Q: What year and where did you graduate high school, and what was the atmosphere concerning drug use?
I ask coz the detox thread got me thinking. In 1981 at our high school for lunch we would sometimes walk outside, cross the road the school buses used, sat next to a tree in a circle, and smoked brown weed that was full of seeds. We could not have been more then 200 feet from the office windows, and I dont remember us going to any extraordinary lengths to conceal it.
We certainly walked right back in the class day after day, and often our teachers knew we were high, and did zero. And as I mentioned in the other thread; we even had a physics teacher who'd be like "Ed! Your eyes are so red i cant believe it? You gonna be able to watch this filmstrip? and we'd all chuckle, and that was IT.
I'm not talking the movie Dazed and Confused, but it was not far off.
Booze? I was the last year 18 was legal for NJ. We'd get pulled over by the police with a case on ice in the back seat, and three open beers, and they'd be, "OK, give it up and get out of here." Sometimes worse, definately. But sometimes, that was *it*; almost like out of a Jimmy Norton Bit.
"Ok you wacky hooligans give us those brews and be on your way [tussle]."
Not bragging about how slack it was coz looking back, i was pretty, no Very, lucky. What about you?

I graduated in 1981 as well and it was pretty much as Mike described it.
However I didn't do drugs at that point. I was, however, cutting class and drinking beers on a regular basis.

yep TJ, and actually by senior year i was absolutely straightedge compared to my soph year, when i discovered that shibby. The booze was more after High School for me, but we had days where kids snuck parents beers on the bus and were drinking on the way to school. Bobby Hentz once puked all over his desk in freshman science, 95% of it was beer, he asked people for paper to clean it up, and with the notebook paper we gave him, he basically just spread it around his desk until he realized maybe he should go to the nurse.
And the teacher never noticed it for a second. Right out of a movie; he went right on with the lesson.
[Oh yeah I just remembered too. Our yearbooks were FILLED with pics of seniors and other peeps with beers in hand. Before/after proms, in the 'what we did all summer' section, etc...]

I graduated in 2001, Clifton High School.
About 85% were potheads and drinkers, not many fooled around with yayo or acid but a good amount were popping E like orange tic tacs.

I graduated in '91. Booze and pot were the main drugs. Lol, I didn't know what a bowl looked like until college. I didn't partake in all that until I got to college.

I graduated in '91 and beer was a big weekend hobby for me. Occasionally during the week. Weed was available but I didn't have it that much. My school was pretty straight (private, christian brothers), so we didn't have any drunk kids in class incidents, at least none that I knew of.
It really wasn't until college that I started my adventures racing over the salt flats in a jet powered, monkey navigated rocket car full of tons of booze and stuff, ya know?

I graduated in '90 from Marion High School in Marion, IN and there were a few students during lunch that would step out into the courtyard (right outside the lunchroom) and palm a few cigarettes.
They could also go across the street to smoke. But anything heavier was usually done further down the road or someone would take their car and drive someplace safer.
The one thing that was pretty lax was the off campus policy. If you were old enough to drive and had a car, it was no problem to walk out the doors hope into your car and head out for lunch. No one checked ID's and no one really cared, providing you were back in time for class (for those whose teacher's kept records).
I only saw 20% of the students as overt drug users/drinker which means that it was probably closer to 40-45%.
I was one of those weird ones who never did the drug thing (not even pot). I'd have the very occasional drink, but nothing major.
I'm the same way now, but when I decide it's going to be a night of drinking, let the martinis flow!!! I'll do mixed drinks and wine all night long.

I graduated from Oyster Bay HS in 1985. There was a lot of weed and not much else.
EDIT: The alcohol flowed. I remember getting soused on several a lunch hour during my Senior year.

I was class of '96 in western MD. I think Pot was bigger than Alcohol (although i'm sure there was pleanty of both). I was a good little boy until it was aparent my athletic career was going nowhere. Then I did partake. It seemed to me that Pot was a hell of a lot easier to get a hold of than alcohol, but that might have just been because that what my friends choose to do. It also seemed a lot easier to conceal. When I went to college the alcohol was the thing, and still is...

I graduated in 19....none of your business from Cardinal Hayes HS in the Bronx. As far as I know, there was absolutely no drinking or drugging while I was attending school (in the school)!! After school and on weekends were another story. and the legal drinking age back then was 18, so most of the seniors were hanging out at the Killarney Rose pub on Melrose Ave. in the Fordham section after school doing "homework"!!!!!!

I graduated last year. Pot, Coke, and Booze were the main things at my school. Always those shady kids that you can buy a dime bag(quite good i may add) for only 5 bucks.
When I had photography, we would go outside and I would always see the same kids smoking behind a tree. Dumb fucks they were as a cop drove right by and snagged them.

I'm a sophmore in high school now, and the flow of weed and booze throughout the student body on the weekend is real heavy. Theres always a good amount of parties on the weekends and Id say of the entire high school, a good 80% REGULARLY either smoke weed or drink. An additional 10% occasionaly do either, 5% more of the people have atleast tried weed/drinking, and the other 5% never touch anything illegal. Pot is the most accessible drug for kids but there are some people who have done stuff like coke and E. Also, Id say about 7-8 kids have gone to rehab...and still smoke weed.
Ive never known of anyone drinking during school, but tons of kids smoke cigarettes throughout the day, either in the bathroom or sneak outside and smoke by a door that no one goes by. I think you get like suspended if you get caught smoking cigarettes.
There is some times when a kid will come to school high, I know a kid got expelled last year cause he got caught lightin up in the bathroom.

I graduated in 1996 from Smithtown High School, and we used to get drunk, trip out on acid and smoke pot. I usually saved my bad habits for the weekends, but once and only once, I smoked pot at school, went home early saying I was tired (I actually fell asleep in the nurse's office), and then woke up and went to work.

03 from Raritan High.....we had alot of kids being sent to rehab. A couple of Seniors before us had O.D'd and continued doing so after we all graduated.
I'd say 90% drank, 95% smoked pot, 97% smoked cigarettes and maybe 60-75% did everything else.
Makes you proud.

River Dell High, Class of'82 checkin' in ( Hoo=Haa!!)
Yes, '82 was a troubled year; The Draft Registration was in effect, They raised the drinking age from 18 to 21 (Luckily, 2 of by buds were grandfathered.)
That time and place was mainly alcohol (Beer the preferred), yet there was a small, hardcore group of "Heads" who would light up right a the picnic tables behind the giant maple, during lunch.
Smoking cigarettes was OK in designated areas. By senior year, you needed your parents permission to do so.
We knew all of the bars in Pearl River, NY, where the drinking age was still 18...TJ's, Mario's, Maxiumus... and the beer outlet that was literally one block from the NJ Border.(We could do a trip there, and back during lunch-time!) And as Mike said, if you were lucky, the cops would take your beer and send you on your way.
I learned later in life from my friend's dad (an Oradell Cop) that they would just put the beers in their trunk, bring it home, and that was their personal supply for the week!

graduated in 94. i would say there were a bunch more non drug users than there were users. alcohol was big and most kids in my class drank. i didn't smoke until i was a senior, but was drinking at about 14. by my senior year, about 1 or 2 times a week i would carry around a bottle with OJ and Vodka. not an overpowering drink, but good enough to get a good buzz going. sucked when it was time to practice for lacrosse.

In my graduating class at Hunter College High School it was probably about 50-50 on occasional drinking and pot smoking. Surprisingly only about 5% smoked cigarettes. Keep in mind this is a school that is filled with stereotypical asians and upper class whites whose parents demanded them to be Ivy League material at 10. So its definitely not a good subsection.
I've never really touched much of anything in my life. I've drank maybe a half gallon of alcohol in my life. Never smoked pot or a cigarette, think maybe I ate something with coke in it once. I'll try to keep it that way.

I've drank maybe a half gallon of alcohol
That was senior year study hall for me. That should give you an idea of my high school's drug/smoking/alchohol situation.
On average though, I would say my school was just that, average. Lots of drinking, lots of cigarettes. Drugs were readily available, mostly weed, acid, mushrooms, that type of stuff. A little coke, K just starting to get big when I left as well as prescription stuff. I was never really into any of it. I smoked weed (and other things, depending on who you got it from) and drank, nothing else. Dabbled in K, but not enough to even really say I used it.

I graduated Great Neck So. HS in 1984. I use to smoke pot when I wasnt at school, but did do it once with a friend during lunch one time. I was on Stage Crew and we had this room off the auditorium called the "Midget Room" where sets and props were kept and we had couches and coffee tables set up and would sneak up there through the art department and hang out, they had bongs and stuff and we'd smoke cigarettes and party. It was cool. There was a password you had to say to get into the room "three fingered willy" and theyd let you in. I knew kids who were doing acid and stuff back then, but I stayed away from them. The only thing that happened once was someone put a hit of meskalin(sp?) in a beer I was drinking at a Super bowl party. I remember drinking the beer and then the next thing I knew I was home, looking at my huge puplis in the mirror, totally unaware what happend to me. I didnt find out till 6 months later that it happened. I tried coke only once in my life after senoir year, and it felt so great, I swore Id never do it again, knowing how easily one could get addicted to that feeling. I tried my hardest to not fall into the "stoner" group, for the sake of myself and my parents, who I knew would be devistated if I turned out like that. I knew kids who's parents didnt mind them partying, and in the beginning I thought they were "cool" but later changed my mind about them. After college I smoked pot for a few years, but quit once I got a job in a company that did regular drug testing and I havent done it in say, 15 years?

I grew up in Va. Beach and graduated in '92. Drugs were abundant in my school, mainly ganja and pills, but I didn't dabble in that. Alcohol was the "cool thing" to do. I remember getting a friends older brother to buy us 22oz Colt .45 or some other awful malt liquor the previous night and chilling it overnight in a hidden cooler at my buddies house. We would stick the bottles in our backpacks and keep them there until we went to the library (luke warm to say the least). We would pound the beers in the individual cubicles and shove the empties into our bags, dropping them, oh so stealthy, into the nearest bathroom trashcan.
I can also remember going surfing, skipping the first few periods, and getting absolutely snotted before 11 am. Good times. My liver regrets it now.

i graduated in 2002 from St francis prep is fresh meadows. and see the most of the people going there were rich as hell, the tuition is more than any CUNY or SUNY school. anyway during the four years i was going there thats when E blew up. i saw a guy pop 2 supermen in homeroom. junior year i was drunk at least 3 days of the week but senior year i had a job. this job was across the grand central from my school, so basically i crossed a bridge and at this job i found drug abusers. i mean a holy kind of hell of a drug user. people who took hits of acid before they smoked a blunt. oh wait im veering off topic.
at my school the rich kids brought in some amazing weed. sometimes it was greener than crayola's green crayon. sometimes it came with blue hairs(blueberry) instead of orange ones. sometimes it had white hairs (white widow). but my god they brought me the greatest weed every grown.......northern lights, i thought wow this is the best, then they mixed the lights with silver haze and thats the highest i can actually remember being. the best easiest place to smoke was the park behind my school, good old cunningham park. but me and my friends would roll the blunt in school somewhere, whether detention or in the deans office. and then we would just walk around and smoke. so yeah drugs were all over the place in my school. farmies were easy to get, i had a weed dealer in every class i ever went to, extacy before senior year was very easy to get as well, the hardest thing to buy was alcohol. drugs were easy.

I graduated in 87 on Long Island. This was the era of the drug war, Just Say No, campaigns against drunk driving & AIDS. You know, the wild and wooly 80's. I think there was a stigma about getting B's. All of which made us want to drink and do drugs even more. I never even liked pot, and it took me years to figure this out because of this climate. Remember those commercials 'This is an egg, This is drugs, This is your egg on drugs" All that ad did was give me the munchies. I'd say half the school did drink/smoke pot to varying degrees. Maybe 5-10% were heavy users, but by 12th grade most of them didn't even go to class anymore. I think its a phase you should just let kids go through. I also had friends with strict parents who were scared to do drugs in High School, AND BECAME THE BIGGEST POTHEADS when they got out, for years and years later. Like the Catholic School girls who are so repressed as teenagers, they get out of school and nail everyone in sight. Just let kids go through the phase in school, they'll be better off.

The thing is it started young in my area. Most of the friends I had were drugged out at 12, or 13. Boys and girls. Crazy crazy shit we did at such a young age when I think back on it. But shit, in PA there's not much to do besides do drugs, drink and fuck.

I went to a school in Manhattan Known as McBurnout by some of the other private schools in manhattan. Alot of the kids were from boarding schools and were thrown out for using. Which has got to be hard because I think everyone I know who graduated from boarding school was a total addict/alcoholic, then again I was always around those people doing those things. ALOT of Drugs, and the Message that cocaine was only Mentally addictive! You Know that old chestnut!
Now I look back and I know the foundation of years of abuse started right there and continued based on the habits I developed there. We had a wake and Bake club, and the swim team had alot of potsmokers onit. Pheonix House came in and got a few kids into their program but they only made you want to get high when you were around them they were so annoying,I learned alot form the books we read as well. It made it all seem exciting until your in REHAB for the 5th time! High school what waste of time Jesus My kids are never going to school.

I graduated in 95 here in Nashville, and alcohol was common, drugs happened, but, at least in my circle of friends, weren't being partaken by the majority of the student body. Personally, I was a saint in high school, I never touched alcohol or pot. I always had this feeling that I was still a kid and that it wasn't for me, yet. It wasn't until I joined the army, and was stationed in Fort Bliss that I started drinking. (In Bliss if you're under 21 and military you're allowed to purchase alcohol and drink only on post--it was to prevent you from crossing over the border into Juarez.) Pot I didn't try until I was 20.
