Well Carter, when you become
18 you are supposed to
register for the draft. That
means there is a chance there
will be a draft but I doubt
it. Carter, you are 17 so
just don;t sign up. Of course
you will not be able to get a
state or city job until you
sign and there are some other
stuff also. There will be no
more running off to Canada
like Nam so don;t plan on
that. After Nam Canada
basically areed they will not
hide the americans running
away. But again I doubt there
will be a draft
hopef

Don't be afraid my friend.

There is no current draft and the severity of the situation MILITARILY would need to be at catastrophic levels to need a draft. There are people enlisting at record levels currently and the people that have military experience will be called - If Needed.

Relax and continue to provide this service running the messageboard. That is where you need to be. There is a catharisis, a cleansing ocurring on this board! We need that - we are here together!

No one can guarantee anything of course, but there is little likelihood of a draft.

The current crisis and war we're facing has united all Americans in their unilaterals support of military intervention. One would have to be insane to cause division on issues of the draft.

Besides, by all indications, this war will involve some, but not many ground troops; certainly not the amount needed to justify a draft.

I'm personally a little afraid of a draft and war myself. I'm the only son in my family, so I'm going last, but I fear for friends and fellow Americans. It's easy to say that we need to sacrifice a few lives for freedom when you don't know the lives ended. But this disaster is close for the 1st time in my life, and I see how loss can affect people. I want to see more pin-point strikes with bombs and missles than troops. But I understand how it is nessecary this time to make sure this never happens again. We might need some brave men to go into Afghanistan to....

Being afraid of dying a young and violent death doesn't make someone a pussy. A draft would follow only after a sustained major theater war, so there is no need to fear it anytime soon, and it would not likely come as a surprise.

Stay Proud.

I sincerely hope you are joking CYYFYYY, cause that is the biggest pussy comment I have ever heard.

I am 23 and registered. If a day comes that Uncle Sam calls me; without hesitation I would go. My dad was drafted during Vietnam, My grandfather was a gunner in WWII, and they both speak of there military days with pride.

Of coarse I would be scared, just like everyone else, but that in no way means you turn from your responsibilty to serve this country.

Carter, it's ok. I don't want to be drafted either. Chances are if I was called to duty I would dodge it as much as possible. Do I consider myself a pussy? Yes...but I value my life and feel I could do better alive rather than dead.

This is from Time.com

Will there be a draft?

Not before an escalation in conflict that is barely imaginable at this point. The Army alone has over 1 million professional soldiers, and the U.S. Armed Forces already have the capability to fight a major war with an enemy the size of China or Russia. The enemy in this case is a small band of terrorists and possibly nations that support them; air strikes and small Special-Ops-type operations are the most likely options at this point

A full-scale invasion and occupation of a country such as Afghanistan would likely result in the activation or reserves, certainly. But remember -drafted soldiers take 6 months to train properly, and at this point no one is imagining a protracted large-scale conflict on the order of WWII or even Vietnam. It's just not that kind of enemy. But as we've learned this week, the unimaginable is always possible

I too signed up with selective service of course not even thinking that my country would need help from me anytime soon...I mean who did? In all honesty i'll be honest and say i'm an unhealthy person, overweight and asthmatic no use hiding the truth wheter it sounds funny or not so i'm not sure how anyone can use me for anything useful if a war does indeed occur. Mind you i am afraid as i'm sure many people over 18 are but even through all this i'm hoping for the best.

At your age being scared is normal. I was. I was scared at 28. Ten more years, and I'm willing to leave a wife and two kids to fight for what's right. I got a chance to enjoy my 20s, I want others to.

It's a shame that by the time you are old enough to realize what you are truly fighting for, you are too old to fight for it.

P.S. Being afraid at your age is normal.

If you are that worried about the draft, I would recommend enlisting in the National Guard, Air National Guard, or Coast Guard.

Currently, the US military is prepared to fight a military the size of China or Russia. I doubt Afghanistan's ragtag bunch is nearly the same size, or power.

"military the size of China or Russia. I doubt Afghanistan's ragtag bunch is nearly the same size, or power."

We didn't declare war on Afghanastan (yet), so right now we're looking at a piece of crap even smaller that that.

I submit that most would be afraid when confronted with the idea of their own mortality.

Fear is not a "pussy" response. It is part of our psychological and perhaps biological makeup.

Perhaps you've heard of the "fight or flight response?" The "flight" part is based on fear and is just as normal a reaction as the fight response.
