Memorial Day, for many, is the unofficial start of Summer. Cookouts, the beach, vacations...all the good stuff of summer!!! But Memorial Day is more, much more, than that. It is a day set aside to remember those who came before us and with us, those who have laid down their lives while in the armed services of our country.
This is not meant to be a political thread nor a thread that is to incite argument. It is only written to honor those who made the supreme sacrifice!
I have had members of family who have served in the armed services in every major conflict since WW1. I have also lost relatives in these wars. I know that I am not alone on this board in this regard. I just want to spend a moment remembering all of them and what their deaths have meant to me and the country.
God bless them!!

Are there any veterans out there? If so, sound off so we know who you are...I'll even start it off for you:

I'm a Navy war vet that was involved in the Persian Gulf war and served on 2 aircraft carriers when I was in the Navy.

And fuck you to those who say that the Persian Gulf War wasn't a real war because we still lost 3 pilots from our ship.

God bless those who fought from WWII and are still fighting this crummy war now and a heartfelt Memorial Day to all of the vets.

I am lucky enough to not have lost any family members to war, but I appreciate every sacrifice as much as I possibly can.

I think both of the Gulf Wars have been the first conflicts that none of my relatives/ancestors have been involved in...if you have any veterans in your family, talk to them! The experiences and stories they can share are incredible, and someday they'll be lost forever unless somebody is there to remember...

I served 4 years in the Marine Corps. I went in just after the 1st gulf war. I was sent to Somalia for Operation Restore Hope. Also was there to evacuate UN troops and personnel in 1995.

Memorial day has so much more meaning to me ever since I joined the Corps. Let us remember the fallen who gave the ultimate sacrifice who gave us the opportunity to enjoy our freedoms.

Let's not forget that this Memorial Day is less than a week away from June 6th, when we'll honor the 60th anniversary of D-Day and the Allied landing in Normandy, France.

I've read countless books and articles and seen who-knows-how many movies and documentaries on D-Day, but I never get tired of hearing it all. There truly never will be anything of that singular scale, militarily-speaking, ever again, and it's something that just strikes awe in me.

When I lived in France, I took a trip to the Normandy beaches one Thanksgiving, and it was incredible. There was seemingly NOBODY else there that time of year, at almost all of the beaches, and the weather was just misty and gray, like the day of the landing itself. And the French really have done a tremendous job of keeping up the memorials and monuments and graveyards there. You really get a sense of honor and respect when you experience it.

i spent my day of remembrance eating soggy barbecue....

My younger brother held the big umbrella as i took care of the grilling... my Uncle Bill who served in the Navy during the Korean War came over with his girlfriend of 40 years, we call her Aunt Helen. Dad and his ladyfriend, and a few other friends and relatives joined us. Turns out everyone's burger came out just the way they liked them. They were 6 ounce fresh butcher burgers and we use the potato rolls which seem to be denser and fresher than a regular Wonder hamburger roll. And they also loved the Thumanns hot dogs. It was the first time i tried them.

I used the Masterpiece Ginger and Garlic marinade for the chicken breasts, they enjoyed it but i didn't really care for it...

The watermelon was nice and red but too ripe. It softened the texture and what i believe happens is the sugar and juice begin to ferment giving it a slightly bitter taste...

then we finished up with apple pie and ice cream...

turned out to be a nice day!
