My friend the other day suggested i try meeting people over the internet. i said hells no due to the fact there are crazies and such out there BUT does Internet dating and matchmaking still have that stigma of LOSERVILLE or is it becoming mainstream?
I argue that if people find out one has met someone over the 'net that they are considered sad and pathetic ....

i recently moved back to ireland after 13 years away and joined an internet dating site to meet a girl, but it is a mixed blessing
for one it is very male orientated activity 1-3 ratio and can be a big distraction from work.
i have met up with 2 girls and there is an air of desperation, you feel a real pressure that any commitment/continuation would lead to something really serious
but then again 1 know, 2 people who are very happily married from a dating site
i am getting a bit old to be picking up girls in bars, but i think i will have to get back into that game

well, you're kind of asking two different questions. i think that there's not the same stigma attached to internet dating that there used to be. it's become a lot more acceptable. however, there is still the problem of meeting "crazies" and the like. you need to be really careful. however, it's probably not that much different than meeting someone in real life who you don't know at all.

Did one of the girls turn out to be your crazy, horny cousin from America?!?

Just remember the important rule..
No pics, no date.
Trust me, they do not look like Felicity (or your male celebrity of choice), they do not work out as much as they can, and they do not have in shape bodies, no matter how many times they tell you.
A cute voice != a cute body.

Internet dating will NEVER not be shameful.
Hell, I think using personals out of a newspaper is shameful.
Of course, leave it to my lucky schlub of a brother to break these trends...he ended up dating a girl in high school he met off the internet who really was a teenage fashion model.
Lucky little fuck.
Literally.

I know a hot chick who did this and married some douche she met because of it.
This guy should go to Vegas with his luck. The odds of that are staggering.

this is my worst nightmare, i was brought up in a very rural close knit community, family ties are very important and some people would keep track of a few thousand relatives, this includes relatives through marriage as well as blood relatives.
Now let me tell you how much of a turn off the line "that would make us 4th cousins once removed" is, i don't care how hot she is, whether you only became related due to a wedding the week before, that sir is wide eyed uncomfortable time,

Meeting someone on a computer will never appeal to the thick-headed Jersey Shore DJays in Belmar type. Ie the guys and gals that used to make fun of nerds and still feel they need to.
Everyone else has no problem with it...

Nice!!!
There had to be 200 people in line friday/sat nights to get into that place. I walk the Belmar Boards a lot, and pause to watch and listen to them across the street, with NY accents so thick if I recorded them and played them youd think it was a bit. And it seems the Paris Hilton wear-alomost-nothing is in and wearing supertight jeans way below the waist is out.
Getting shitfaced and yelling at members of the opposite sex in a desperate attempt to get laid seems to be just as popular as ever.

Damn right. And given that EVERYONE seems to say they're Irish, you'd probably have to give everyone outside of the borders of the island a second glance.
Just remember...if you have a cousin named "Clare" and she comes a-callin'...RUN!!!

I've been married 3 years now to a woman I met through an online book discussion group.
We just exchanged book related e-mails for a few months. Met at an annual get-together for some of the list members. Dated for about 9 months. Lived together for about 1 1/2 years and then were married.
Flip side is that a friend of ours used to "hook up" exclusively through the internet and had a string of failed relationships and scary meetings over a 3 year period.
Personally, I feel that you take a chance anytime you decided to date someone. No matter what, it's going to take a while to learn who that other person really is.
Is there still a stigma? Probably so. People will always find a reason to criticize or classify other folks and relationships. Oddly enough, the ones who are most critical are those that are most disatisfied with their own relationship.
That's not to say that you should discount what your friends say. Just realize that everyone (including you) brings subjective filters to the table. Take both praise and criticism properly diluted.

when 50% of married couples get divorced, and god knows how of the remainder is actually HAPPY in their marraige, why not do all you can to increase the odds of FINDING someone you could be happy with?
besides, when love is involved, is ALWAYS sad and pathetic at one point or another. check your ego at the door.

wow; schmegma sais it all. Especially the last part. Love is often irrational.
