OK, so I've got a cable modem that my roommate and I share between our computers...and I've got a 3-year-old 4-port LinkSys router to share the connection. Since getting this new apartment a couple months back, the router doesn't seem able to hold a steady connection.

I've had the cable people out to check the connection, and apparently the cable and modem are running fine. They said something about the router "not being able to renew the IP address(?)" and that I pretty much need a new router.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I mean, I'm able to get online, but the "signal" light on the router is almost always blinking constantly, at it seems the connection is dipping in and out. I've run all the diagnostic software and gotten all the updates for my drivers and such as I can...do I really just need a new router?

You may need a new router, it could have gotten a shock or a jostle in the move which may have affected some of the components. You can get a 4 port router now for like 40 dollars, so it is not the end of the world.
you can type http://192.168.1.1 into your browser and it will bring you into the config screen. If you need the password, PM me (unless you changed it from the default and still remember it)
Once in there, make sure the router is set to DHCP mode. That would solve the problem of it not renewing an IP address.

Mojo, who is your cable provider?

I've been experiencing similar problems with my set-up, and my router is less than a year old.

Here in Oakton it's Cox cable. It sucks.

Jocefus, I tried it already several times, but thanks.

JP, I didn't know they were that cheap now, so that's great...but I'm going to try what you suggested, so here's hoping...

Jeff, it is indeed Cox. Boo. But I did have Cox Digital with this router before and it worked fine, so I'm leaning towards the router being the problem now.

JP, thanks for the help. It looks like DHCP is enabled and renewing itself every 24 hours, so I don't think that was the problem.

Stupid technology!

Here is a the router you would need from NewEgg.com

Router (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=33-124-151&depa=0)

If it is not the DHCP, then it really may be your cable modem. Have you tried to unlpug the modem and let it sit for about 5 minutes, then plug it back in. Sometimes this works. Also, plug the modem directly into your computer, no router. If the problem stops, it is the router

if not, it is the modem or the service.

Mojo - I only started having the same problem within this past few weeks.

I'm still pissed at Cox for their handywork when they tried an upgrade a month ago and fried every single Toshiba Cable Modem on their system.

I think it's time to ditch Cox and switch to DirectTV or the likes. At least then, when I ask for Digital, I'll get more than 20% of them actually IN digital.

At that point, I'll switch to DSL.

All in all, I should save about $50/month.

On a related note, I've been hit with a virus that sounds similar to the Sasser one discussed previously. The problem is that I can't get the PC to boot into Windows at all. It starts the boot process and then gets to the a certain point and then just reboots again.

It won't boot in safe mode, or safe mode w/ command promt, normal, or step-by-step.

Not sure how I'm supposed to
A: figure out which virus this one is - sasser seems close but supposedly it lets you get into windows
B: remove it without getting to a command prompt or the likes.

If you do have sasser, you should be able to boot into safe mode. Try a few more times. If not try to log in regular and you should have like a minute or 2 to do the following.

Also, try to run msconfig and disable lsass.exe and avserve2.exe. Once you do this, download and install AVG from www.grisoft.com. It is free and works very well.

JPM - I can't boot into ANYTHING. won't boot to normal, won't boot to safe, nothing. All it does is go into the "Windows XP loading" screen, then stops and reboots. Then I get my options on how I want to boot (or it automatically boots normal in 30 seconds).

Then I start the fun cycle again of almost getting into windows and then it reboots.

And how, reeshy!

When the modem is plugged into my computer, it says it's only running at 10 Mbps...but when plugged into the router, it's running at 100 Mbps...what's up with THAT (And even though it's only at 10 Mbps, it is a steady signal. I don't have to reclick again and again to get a page to load)? Is my Ethernet card just too old? And even so, that still wouldn't explain the bad router connection...

And Jeff, you're right, since I've heard about all Toshiba modem problems I'm not 100% convinced the problem is with the router. I have what looks to be one of their "older" modems...maybe that's the problem...

the router doesn't seem able to hold a steady connection.

In addition to the suggestions above, you may also want to check out http://www.speedguide.net/ which has numerous internet diagnostic tools that you can use to gauge your connection speeds and drop offs in service.

It sounds like you either need a new router or a virus check is in order. As was recommended above, download AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php) which is free from grisoft.com.

Mojo, I would def. say it is your modem. The firmware is prolly to old. Get a new one from the cable company.

Jeff -
ARe you pressing F8 when the comp starts to get into safe mode, or are you relying on windows to do it. You can try getting a windows 98 start disk and running the scandisk off there on your machine. As long as you are formatted for Fat32 and not NTFS

When I setup my original router I has similar problems with my router. What I did was assign and hard code the ip address to my PC, Server and Laptop. First turn off the DHCP in the router that auto assigns the IP address and use the 192.168.1.xx for each system.

Worked great and had little problem. Make sure that you use the router IP address as the default gateway.

Note that some routers use 192.168.2.1 as their address instead of 192.168.1.1. Belkin is one that I know of.

I know I will get killed for this comment but Check your manualfor the router default IP Address.

Good luck.

Thanks, reef. I actually have AVG from an earlier reccomendation of yours, and it's saying I'm clean.

Scorpion, how do I actually "assign and hard code" the IP address to my PC? I'm a complete moron when it comes to computers, and always need to be handheld in the right direction...sorry.

JP, I'm on the phone with my cable company right now...even if I don't get a new one, I want a tech here to check it out and not just phone service. Thanks!
