Umberto's Clamhouse... It's an Itlalian restaurant in Little Italy. I hear Joe Beningo's convincing rants about this place every night on WFAN. I was wondering if anyone has ever eaten there before, and is it all it's cracked up to be?

Is "Paisano's" in Little Italy still open?

I live in The Bronx and you're right there's a lot of awesome Italian places in Morris Park, but my friend from California is coming to visit soon and he wants me to take him to Little Italy for some great Italian food, so I was wondering if UMBERTOOOOOOOOO'S was the right place. By the way, for those who have been there, how are the prices?

Funny you should mention that.
I was in the city with my S.O. recently, and we wound up downtown in Little Italy. Paesano's was not very crowded, so we got a few lunch specials.
It was decent for the price - nothing special.
I actually asked the manager if I mentioned O&A's name if I got a free glass of wine.
He gave me a dirty look and shook his head.

I've eaten at about 15 places down on Mulberry St. and Umberto's is pretty damn good in my opinion. I recommend Taromina (i think thats how you spell it, but I could be way off) and Sal Anthony's S.P.Q.R. Just hope you don't get shot and killed while dining at Umberto's.

You know, it's funny that I mentioned Morris Park Ave. When I was a rookie in the 43 pct. I used to get the footpost on Morris Park on Sundays. I used to hit all the Italian bakeries for pastry and coffee while doing my thing. In about 3 months, I put on about 20 lbs until my patrol sgt. noticed this and changed my post!!!! Oh well, it was back to Dunkin' Donuts on Westchester Ave. for this flatfoot!!!!!!

Sal Anthony's S.P.Q.R is awesome, but a lot more expensive than the other places around it. Umberto's is very good. You will not be disappointed in either one. But, it has been years since I was at either.

I have an Umberto's in my town. I've never eaten at the one in the city, or in my town. All I know is that whenever I go by it it smells great and I always think of Joe.

I checked UmbertosClamhouse.com and looked at the menu... as soon as I saw "Homemade Lobster Ravioli", that was it. I'm fuckin' GOING THERE.
Oh, and by the way:

I went to Umbertos a few months back for lunch. I think I even had the lobster ravoli. All I can say is... mediocre at best, and a bit overpriced. Considering the reputation it has, I was disappointed. In general, I think you'll find the places on Mulberry Street are tourist traps and not up to the vaunted rep.

If you are going to eat Italian in Elizabeth, the only place to go is Torna Sorrento. Maybe some of the the best Italian Food I have ever eaten besides home made. Its unbelievable how good it is. One night when I was there I was sitting right next to Sable, the old WWF wrestler.

I'm a Jets fan, and I like listening to Joe, and I have to say that's a remarkably good picture of Joe. If you've ever seen him in person, he's kind of dishelved and really really skinny. Kind of like John Astin (Gomez Aadams) in the Night Court years, but looking a lot worse.
