View Full Version : Who (if anyone) covers for you at work?

I supervise a staff of four people. My contact information is found on every letter that these four people tranmit (and it is on their voice mail message as well). We have a floater who is supposed to cover for people who are out of the office. She does a good job, but the attendance in my office is so piss poor it's impossible for her cover for everyone.
So basically I wind up covering for my staff. I do what I can on a priority basis. If I think it can wait until they return, it waits. But what pisses me off is this - I'm in a no win situation. If I put all my energy into covering for everyone, the things that I should be doing get neglected. By the same token, if I cover little or nothing at all, the staff assumes I cannot do their job, and I lose respect. Also, they never thank me for what I do (but I guess that's just human nature ; they figure I owe them).
The senior management sends out mixed signals. They tell us NOT to do case work, but in the same breath tell us we have to do whatever it takes to satisfy the clients.
Who covers for you at work?

The managers that work below me...if they're scheduled. Most of the time I'm SOL if I need time off at the last minute, or even if I'm sick. Being the boss blows in this regard.

I love working for myself and not having to be responsible for anyone and not have to answer to anyone. But when Im sick or need to take a day or two off-work stops. And I do have some deadlines with my work so I have to make up the time at night or whenever I get some free time. Eventually if business gets better I can maybe hire someone part time. But as of right now I dont have anyone that can cover for me.

I work for a national sales team and I have the east coast, and the other assistant has the west coast, so we can cover each other pretty well. At my last job, the executive assistant quit and I covered her job for 6 months while doing my job. They actually gave me a $6000 raise as appeciation.

No one. I generally have to wear eight different hats every day. When I'm out, generally work comes to a stop if anything goes wrong.

I supervise 8 Data Entry Clerks and soon it will be nine at a County Office. If and when I am out no one covers for me. So I need to be here. I just started this new job and I KNOW for sure they will not work unless I am in the office and stay on top of their production.

We are the Network so we are not a "Business" unit so we are looked at as an 'expense'. We don't have to work holidays and 3rd shift and there is no Overtime or on-site coverage if someone calls out. We rotate the on-call phone amongst approx 8 of us every 2 weeks...
them calls at 3 and 4 in the morning Stink!

I work from home alot, so I guess nobody covers for me. If I take a day off or a vacation, my boss covers for me.

ditto.
it sucks, i'm officially allowed to call in sick, but unofficially my boss won't let me. but the good thing if i give him plenty of time to know that i'm going to be out, he has absolutely no problem paying me for my day off.

the great thing about my job is that if i wanna take time off, i need to resolve all loose ends ... then when i get back, i have to process/address the work that built up while i was away ... sometimes it doesn't even pay to take a little personal time ...
