View Full Version : Clarke admits Bush didn't help Bin Laden family

Richard Clarke, Bush's former head of anti-terrorism, and the man who wrote an enormously critical book of Bush's anti-terrorism efforts, has contradicted his own testimony given to the 9-11 Commission. Since Sept 11, Bush haters have been screaming about him going out of his way to aid family members of Osama bin Laden in getting out of the country. It would now appear that GWB had absolutely nothing to do with it. Clarke has been quoted as saying that it was his decision and his decision alone.

The request "didn't get any higher than me," he told The Hill.

"On 9-11, 9-12 and 9-13, many things didn't get any higher than me. I decided it in consultation with the FBI," Clarke said of the plane flight carrying bin Laden's relatives.'

I don't particularly like this site. That jerk-off L. Brent Bozell writes a column for them, but this is worth talking about. And it's not like they're making it up, Clarke's quote does come from The Hill (http://www.thehill.com/news/052604/clarke.aspx)

I love this story.

The people who blasted Clarke as a liar months ago are now quoting him as the bastian of truth.

Typical.

I watched all of Clarke's testimony, and I don't remember him saying Bush approved this. In fact, I think I remember him trying to avoid saying that. I think he tried to lay it on the FBI. Now he seems to be taking more of the responsibility. But Clarke was never one of the people shouting this out, and I simply don't why this is making news now when he said almost the same thing in his testimony.

I'm with you guys; this has always been pretty much a non-issue for me. This is aimed at those that have been trying to use this against Bush: Michael Moore, Stern, for example. Hopefully the whole thing will disappear now, that's all. I'm sick of hearing about it.

Man, I've been hearing Moore scream about this every chance he gets for at least a year now, and I never really gave it much thought...for one. it never seemed like that "shady" a thing even if Bush HAD been behind it (The smartest thing to do would be to get those people out of the country because they simply would NOT have been safe), and Moore never once backed up the statement...he always just threw it out there on the table and never supported the accusation at all.

So essentially it was something that no SERIOUS critic of Bush ever bothered to touch in the first place.

That was really my only thought after reading this - assuming that Clarke can be taken at face value, doesn't this sort of poke a hole in at least one big chunk of Moore's new movie?

From the Hill article, what Clarke said to the Comission:

"The request came to me, and I refused to approve it," Clarke testified. "I suggested that it be routed to the FBI and that the FBI look at the names of the individuals who were going to be on the passenger manifest and that they approve it or not. I spoke with the - at the time - No. 2 person in the FBI, Dale Watson, and asked him to deal with this issue. The FBI then approved . the flight."

FBI spokeswoman Donna Spiser said, "We haven't had anything to do with arranging and clearing the flights."

"We did know who was on the flights and interviewed anyone we thought we needed to," she said. "We didn't interview 100 percent of the [passengers on the] flight. We didn't think anyone on the flight was of investigative interest."

Clarke: "I believe after the FBI came back and said it was all right with them, we ran it through the decision process for all these decisions that we were making in those hours, which was the interagency Crisis Management Group on the video conference," Clarke testified. "I was making or coordinating a lot of the decisions on 9-11 in the days immediately after. And I would love to be able to tell you who did it, who brought this proposal to me, but I don't know. The two - since you press me, the two possibilities that are most likely are either the Department of State or the White House chief of staff's office."

Now, Clarke says he approved it. I don't think this is such a big deal in terms of differences from his testimony. He didn't claim Bush was responsible - he said the FBI approved it. Considering the hundreds of things they were dealing with at the time, I imagine he could forget the details.

The other thing is, though he APPROVED it, it doesn't mean it was his idea. It could have come from the White House. So in terms of Moore's film, depending on how he states it, the case might not be moot.

I do agree with the others who feel it's not a big deal, whatever happened.

Since when does Michael Moore let any sort of "truth" get in the way of any movie he has ever made?

Just to stir the pot a little...

Tampa Airport Acknowledges Previously Denied 9/13/01 Saudi Private Flight (http://www.sptimes.com/2004/06/09/Tampabay/TIA_now_verifies_flig.shtml)

Evidence of White House complicity in an evil "X-Files" type government conspiracy? No.

An oversight by the federal government about a small detail in a very confusing period of time? Possible, at first, but unlikely 2.5 years later.

Another example of this administration ignoring inconvenient or uncomfortable facts? Sounds about right to me.

oh mojo. why do you ask questions to which you already know the answer?

If you go soley on his 60 Minutes interview versus his book, the two accounts are full of discrepancies that can't be reconciled by Clarke himself.

EXACTLY!
Good thing we've got the Bush leg-humpers on board as supporting Clarke's statement.

Whether it came from the White House or State, you can be sure that the request did not come from the aid to the secretary of the deputy to the assistant junior vice adjutant of public affairs.
