Just my opinion on breakups. Ive never witnessed a mutual breakup. I've heard of many many claims, but mutual, to me, means the two people agree to break up at the same time, and feel the same way about the breakup. My experience is; one person feels shafted, or jealous, or angry.

Or more Specifially: One person doesn't really want to break up.

Maybe I'm confusing this with the phrase I've heard: 'we ended the relationship on great terms'.

No, you didnt. [not you Fiesty, I mean the collective 'you'] Relationships dont 'End Great' or else they wouldnt end [thats a movie line stolen from somewhere, but...].
