Remember that problem I was having with Western Union? Well the guy FINALLY got the money order yesterday buy regular good old fashioned mail, at least thats finally over with. So the guy e-mails me and says that he got it and my item will be shipped on monday, WOOHOO!!!

Then I got a phone call at my house. I was like, "huh?" the only people who call me at home is work and they wouldnt call me on a Saturday night. So I pick up the phone and it went something like this...

"hey this is john."
"hii?."
"the guy from ebay."
"oh hiiiiiiiiii."
"i am just letting you know that i got the money order and i wanted to make sure you didnt try to stop payment so i know i can cash this."
"no, its ok to be cashed"
"ok it'll be shipped on monday."

WHAT THE FUCK! I get off the phone with him and I am wondering just how the fuck he got my phone number. I checked my e-mail a few minutes later and it said that he had requested from ebay to give my personal information...Whaaaaaaaat??? Maybe I didn't read the terms and conditions when I signed up but thats just plain creepy and I am not sure I like it. Serves me right for actually putting my phone number in there I suppose. I still think there is something wrong with that though.

I hope i never get a phone call from any seller on ebay again.

Well, eBay will give your info to just about anybody.

I dont know the policy on regular joes, but If it's law enforcement?

=

without a subpoena, eBay will provide all sorts of information to any law enforcement agency for any reason whatsoever.

Without a subpoena, eBay will provide the following information regarding an eBay user to law enforcement:

Full Name, User ID, Email Address, Street Address, State, City, Zip Code, Phone Number, Country, Company, Password, Secondary Phone, Gender, Personal or Business, Shipping information (Name, Street Address, City, State, Zip)

In addition eBay will provide the following transaction information:

Bidding History on an Item, Other Items for Sale, Feedback about a user, Bidding history of a user, Prices paid for items, Feedback rating, and Chat Room/Bulletin Board (!).

=

Joseph E. Sullivan, Director of Compliance and Law Enforcement Relations, Senior Counsel, Trust and Safety for online auction powerhouse eBay:

'We [eBay] try to make rules to make it difficult for people to commit fraud and easy for you [law enforcement agencies] to investigate. One is our Privacy policy. I know from investigating eBay fraud cases that eBay has probably the most generous policy of any internet company when it comes to sharing information.

We also do other things to facilitate your [law enforcement] investigation by looking and doing some searches around on our own, typically to see if there are some other user ID?s associated with that thing.'

eBay is not only "The World's Online Marketplace" but the world's online informant.

I never give my real # when I sign up for anything. I always use the office fax # as my home number. I try and use fake identities as much as possible, not for anything fraudulent mind you, just to avoid herassing phone calls and junk mail. Whenever I return an item at the store that I had paid cash and they ask that I fill out the reciept with name address and #, experience has shown me that they never ask for "proof", so I make up a completely ficticious name and address.

But why did you think you entered your phone number when you signed up? It says you do so in case a seller needs/wants to contact you if there's a problem, or just to confirm a transaction and complete the business (as what happened with you). Of COURSE the number is there for seller/buyers to use in the course of transactions with you. Why would eBay ever have to contact you? It's just the middleman.

So when I put up Trey Parkers jockstrap for sale, you don't want to talk about it and have me describe the stain patterns in it?

silly question, but was your name/address/phone number of the western union check?

As far as I know, ebay doesn't give that info out to regular people.

they do. theres an online form you can fill out. but it MIGHT be only after there has been no email correspondence. either way, its definitely unsettling, but to be expected when in fact you're making a business transaction.

Yeah, how dare they expect to be able to contact the person they're doing business with.
