The U.S.-led coalition has formally handed over sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government at 10:26 a.m. on Monday in a surprise move two days ahead of schedule.

This was definitely a smart move by all parties involved. It allowed them to transfer power without the insurgents pulling off or attempting to pull off a terrorist action in order to disrupt it - which, you know, they would have done.

Bush apparently also secured some NATO backing as well, but we'll see how far that organization really extends itself.
