Do they only pop-up when an internet explorer is open, or does it happen even if your not running anything?

If your using AOL than I'm not sure what you can do, I suggest getting a better Internet Browser (if you can still use AOL with it), one with a built in pop-up blocker such as NetCaptor (http://www.netcaptor.com) or Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com). If they are popping up on your desktop (and even if they aren't) disabling the message feature on XP will stop any that are non-Internet related. You can find the directions here. Abstinence is the only 100% effective way to not get pregnant. Oh wait, were talking about computers. Nevermind.

ok I run spybot and adaware everyday. I use the google toolbar for my blocker and when I downloaded Microsoft service pack 2, it gave me another popup blocker. I am still getting the same 4-5 popups when I open IE. Does it mean anything that they're always the same ones? I was thinking something was hidden in my comp but what do I know.

Please don't tell me to use Firefox. I like my IE just fine.

try 'pop-up killer' ...

google pop-up killer and village voice ... they ran a mr. roboto/machine age column a few years back on anti-pop-up applications ...

pop-up killer is free and works harder than a day laborer ... just adjust the settings to your liking ...

also remember to update the reference files for spybot/adware ... they've also released updated versions of each program ...

try bazooka, too ... real effective for getting the tricky shit ...

I am using the new Ad Aware Pro SE (http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adawareprofessional/) with Ad-Watch turned on. It's pretty amazing, I have had no pop ups in the past two weeks with it. If you get Ad Aware Pro SE you need to turn on Ad Watch which will run in the tray, it works very well. I've done several customized system scans since installing this and turning on Ad Watch and have had no spyware at all on my computer. Ad Aware Pro works in real time as opposed to the free Ad Aware in that it zaps the spyware as they come along in the system in background. I don't even know about it until I look at the activity reports.

Travelzoo is an AIM popup. You pass your mouse over the ad on the buddy list and it's there. Try AIM Middle Man and you can get rid of that ad box altogether.
