Can somebody of the non-Jesus persuasion tell me why that Jews freak out over tats, yet piercings in other places besides the ears, nose jobs, and boob jobs are ok?

Seems to me that they are just as permanent as the tats. At least, the nose jobs definitely are... you can't grow a nose back, or have it taken out.

Leviticus 19:28

Apparently, they are interpreting this commandment by God to Moses regarding marking their flesh as being offensive to God, since he had forbidden it in the passage.

I've always heard it was forbidden to mark your body if you're jewish. I have found a number of articles on the subject as well...

Bible followers should note some Levitican laws:

youre not supposed to trim your beard

eat shellfish

wear clothes made of two different cloths

work on the sabbath [punishable by death in one instance]

oh, and in exodus, they give instructions on how to sell your daughter into slavery.

=

As for tatoos, perhaps some who profess the Jewish faith still have memories are tattoos worn by those who survived Dachau, Bergen-Belsen, Treblinka, etc...

it was something called the holocaust as well...

a tattoo to someone who is jewish (well most people- know a few with alot of tats) is a derogatory sentiment

when the jews were put into camps they were tattooed with a number against their will

also most jewish cemeteries will not allow a jewish person with a tattoo to be buried there

as a person who isnt jewish that statement is really rude

also most jewish people get nose jobs for the fact they have difficulty breathing- a deviated septium (sp*)- also im not saying there arent people who just get it for vanity cuz there are

but matt brings up a good point. piercings and cosmetic surgery would make the , non permanent markings of the body seem a bit hypocritical.

furie- i agree with you half way on your point... but look at OLD SCHOOL JEWISH vs NEW SCHOOL JEWISH

if someone follows their religious by what is told to them right or wrong BUT they get a tattoo then yes its hypocritical

BUT most older jewish people (im guessing 40's and up) probably do not have tattoos

the resurrgance of the tattoo in the fad sense just recently started up again in the mid '90's

the one girl who i used to go to school with was a hippee yet always wore her star of david ( it was a cool piece she had- silver with a semi precious stone in the middle- i think turguois)

on her back she had a HUGE FAIRY tattooed and one day in class she said that it borke her mom's heart in the fact she has a tattoo and that it is against their religion

They can't be buried in a Jewish cemetary if they have tattoos, right?

That doesn't seem fair...especially for Holocaust survivors.

Let me quantify.

A friend of a friend is orthodox Jew.

This means she's home from work on Fridays by 3PM, all the lights are out by 5, and she doesn't do ANYTHING until moonrise Saturday night.

However, she's also a huge superfreak in the sack, and she has a pierced tongue.

So I found this curious.

it is something politically motivated- the "barbarians" back in the day, were covered with tats and such. it was a means of distingishing me from you.

i'm suprised no one has brought up vos's never forget tat.

With him, I can't tell if that's a threat or a challenge.

The most on-point link I could find (http://www.faqs.org/faqs/judaism/FAQ/05-Worship/section-58.html)

Old-fashioned but, apparently, still largely in effect.

However, she's also a huge superfreak in the sack, and she has a pierced tongue.

But does she use the sheet with the hole in it and, more importantly, does she look like a young Gina Gershon?

well, i'm jewish, but i dont know that i'll be much help, since i'm not very religious. this is what i know:

jews are not supposed to get tattoos. it's true that you can't be buried in a jewish cemetary if you have one. although i've heard that they may be able to cut it off or something so that you can be buried there.

you are also not really supposed to get piercings, i guess for the same reason that you're not supposed to get tattoos. obviously, this rule isn't followed nearly as strictly. most jewish women i know, save for perhaps the very religious, have their ears pierced. my sister's orthodox friend also has her belly button pierced. her parents weren't too pleased, but i'm pretty sure she can still be buried with them in the jewish cemetary. perhaps it's because you can take the jewelry out?

as far as those tattooed in the holocaust, i'm fairly certain that that wouldn't keep someone out of a jewish cemetary. in fact, one of my dad's aunts has one, and i'm quite sure that she and her husband will be buried together in a jewish cemetary.

lastly, i don't really know about the plastic surgery. i've never heard anything about it one way or another, whether it qualifies as a body modification in the same way a tattoo does.

and, feisty, i know you were trying to help, but it's no less rude to say that most jews get nose jobs because they have difficulty breathing. i don't know about everyone else, but i don't have a big nose, or difficulty breathing, and i've never considered having a nose job. and besides, lots of non-jews get deviated septums.

i apologize if what i said was taken out of context or maybe what i post was confusing...i should have stated the jewish people i know, who have had a nose job, was for purely health reasons because they had a deviated septum

i think everyone probably knows people i their life who suffer from a deviated septum- religion has nothing to do with it

Oh the Timing! This month's issue of Skin and Ink did a huge piece on jews with tattoos. It actually says the whole deal about tattooed jews not being buried in hebrew cemetaries is a myth. I haven't read the whole piece yet, but I would check it out.
