View Full Version : Selling scripts?

So there's a 'sidewalk sale' at the mall. You know, little stands selling basketball jerseys, baseball cards, etc. There's this one guy selling movie posters and copies of scripts. The scripts go for in between 10 and 20 bucks, all movies that are in the theatres. Is this legal? Seems like copyright infringement to me, like I can't print out Stephen King's latest book and sell it or download a copy of a film and sell it. Why can this guy sell someone else's work without paying the for it? Seems shady to me.

Regardless of the legality of this, my question is, who the hell would ever buy a script? WHat the fuck would you do with it. Invite your friends over and read lines like you are Al Pacino in Godfather? When you hand that guy a 20, he should punch you in the face.

It's not legal. I've seen these guys before, and they just make copies of shooting scripts and sell them. They don't own the copyright, and I highly doubt that they have received authorization from the copyright holders to sell those scripts. Notice that you never see these scripts show up in legitimate stores (if you do, they are professionally bound and put out by a legitimate publisher). Instead they show up at makeshift stands and conventions.
As for why to buy a script, if you're thinking about trying your hand at writing a script, there are books and courses on that, but it's also helpful to do a read of actual scripts (especially movies you like) to get a feel for script writing.
Also, I've seen cases where those guys have scripts that never got made (such as Kevin Smith's Superman), or a movie that hasn't come out yet. I assume there's a curiosity factor that propels people to buy those scripts.

Can't you find these online? I remember seeing the KillBill script before it came out.

imagine if the sneek camcorders into theaters, record the latest movies, and sold them on the sidewalks across america....oh wait they do that already.
Whats the difference if its a script or the actual movie. It's being done everyday everywhere. It cant be stopped.
Now let me get back to downloading spiderman 2

OK; Who's the Music Trivia expert who's gonna give the artist and title of the song that samples the above? I mean not just a bit of it; almost the whole thing.
