View Full Version : DVD Burning Question

A few weeks ago I picked up a 8x DVD burner. At the moment I've only been able to get 4x DVD disks, and I've burned a few disks with it.
Everything works fine with the drive, though the only thing I'm trying to figure out is that when I make a DVD with a movie or video on it it takes a very long time to make it. I downloaded a movie the other day and last night burned it to disk though it took about 10 hours to make it. Is this normal? Is there a faster way to process this?
It was a mpeg movie in three parts which took up roughly 3/4 of the disk. I had the same experience with a disk I made last week as well. The disks burn fine and the quality on my tv screen is excellent, I'm just curious if there's a faster way to burn the disks.
I'm using Nero 6 Ultra Edition with Nero Vision Express 2 burning the DVDs.

The reason it may have taken so long is that the video may have needed to be converted. DVD's are mpeg-2 format. Anything else, like an .avi would need to be converted before being able to be burned to a DVD. I think Nero would do this for you with some of the common format's, but this take a shitload of time and computer power. 10 hours sounds about right for this.

So am I better or converting the formats of the files to save time, or does it really not matter since it would have to be done anyway?
What I mean is, if I used another program say for example Adobe Premier, or some other program that converts mpeg to mpeg2 or avi format would it still take the same amount of time to convert?

I do not think it would really matter. it takes a lot of time no matter what you are going to do or what program you are using. If Nero works for you, and the DVD's play in a DVD player, then stick with what you have. Its going to be long and slow regardless.

Perhaps I'll have to build myself a new system specifically for the purpose of burning DVDs and editing video. I originally had that in mind and built a second system just for video editing a few years ago though I had to sell the system when I fell on some financial troubles. I'd do this to free up my main computer.
I'm going to a computer show tomorrow. The last one I went to a few weeks ago had PIII's dirt cheap. I could probably put together a basic system for about $100-$200.
Plus now that I have a wireless network in place I imagine I could get a wireless card for the pc and move the files to be burned through the network to the other pc. It'd take a few minutes to do, but at least I wouldn't have my main system completely out of commission while I burned DVDs.

Reefy -
One second before you go buying a new computer to do this, think about what you are going to need and what you want to do.
(Note: I have no idea what you have now or how much you want to spend. these are just some idea's and observations)
First off, Pentium 4 computers are always tops for any type of video editing. The even beat out the new AMD 64 chips. You are def. going to want to get a P4, the faster the better. this is one of the few things that will actually use all of the speed your CPU has. Next important thing is FSB(Front Side Bus) Older chips have 400MHZ. Then they went to 533, then 800. Obviously, the faster the better. 533 may be the sweet spot in terms of price, but if they are close def. go with the 800. Next is RAM. you want 512MB of DDR memory. there are a bunch of different speeds. Don't go nuts and get the fastest because it will not help. It may actually hurt. You want DDR PC3200 type ram. Timings will not matter to much.
Also, a fast (i.e. 7200RPM hard drive with a 8MB cache).
Obviously a DVD burner is needed.
The wireless seems to me like the biggest problem. Even if it is 802.11g, its going to take a LONG amount of time to move stuff. If possible, try and do it with wires through you router. It will save you so much time and not test your patience. If not, not a huge deal.
A PIII would not be to bad for the job either, especially as a second computer. If that is its only job, it will not matter if the total time difference is 9 hours instead of 7.5 with a P4. either way, its not going to be instantanous. I really suck at spelling.
Where is the comp show tommorow?

The show is at the Garden State Exhibit Center in Somerset NJ.
I see what you mean about the wireless. I could run a wire as well, though I figured this would be the neater way of doing it.
As for the system itself. I would love to have a P4, though for that kind've investment I would consider that for my main system. So unless I took the approach of building a new main computer for myself. Though I'm still holding out for systems with the new BTX mainboards, and serial ATA, etc. I figure that when it comes time for me to make my new main system I will go all out and make sure it's got everything I want, and is ready for the new 64bit Windows whenever that comes out.

I burned 4 gigs of laser disc data onto a DVD at 2.4x in about 40 minutes.

Cool! Thanks for the link. I may go to one of these shows. I am also waiting to build a system. i did just get a new laptop from work, dell 600m so I am actually set for a while, or until they fire me!
I use a very old P4, i think 1.5 ghz with the 400mhz FSB to do video editing and DVD burning. I took it from my dad when we all chipped in and bought him a new laptop for his 50th birthday last year. Its not that fast, but good enough. Like you, its main job is just to do that type of stuff.
I am, however, in the process of putting together a parts list for a Home Theather PC. Not 100% sure if I am def. going to build it, but it looks like it as of now. that should be a cool project.
Maybe I will catch you at the show! I will just stand bvy the P3 computers going "do you like ron and fez?"
I will be the crazy Jen of the computer world!

I recently got my own laptop a Dell Inspiron 1100. I got it for $600 on ebay. It's very fast and does what I need for it to do. I was actually using it and posting on the board while I waited for the main system to burn the DVD. I mostly use my laptop at work for programs that aren't installed on my computer at work.
Actually my work pc is unlocked and I have administrative control over it, though with the new company getting it's grips in everything I figure it's a matter of time before they come in and lock every ounce of functionality out of it down.
