[color=purple]I'm trying to do something from the show, but can't seem to find an Audio Editing Program that works. So far today I've downloaded Audacity, Adobe Audition, Cakewalk, Music Publisher and MP#/WAV Editor.

The closest I've come to doing what I need to do has been with Audacity and Audition, which both allow me to isolate audio, but I haven't been able to save the isolation with either.

What I need to do is be able to take a few seconds worth of audio from various show segments and later be able to add them all to a new file, along with the ability to add voice recording to it.

Clear as mud for ya? This shit is driving me crazy. Plus tomorrow's a busy day/night and I was hoping to have this for them by Monday.

Does anybody know of an easy to use program that will allow me to do all this?

All the programs you mentioned I was going to suggest...

Maybe try Acoustica's iMix? I use the program a lot and it's not very powerful but it gets the job done when it comes to throwing bits a peices togeather (you can also record voice and throw it into a track on there).

[color=purple]Maybe I'm just not doing it right?

The problem with downloading stuff for free is that there are no instructions. Any chance you can talk me through it with Audacity?

I'll go check out the software you suggest. Thanks.

Gary, how much do you know/how much experience with digital production.

Adobe Audition [was Cool Edit Pro; the standard of radio production for many] and Cakewalk are good; but expensive, but you get what ya pay for.

You might want to try Sonic Foundry Sound Forge; its not a multi-track system if youre looking to overdub, but there's shitloads of multi-tracking freeware and shareware.

Sounds like what you want to do is rip audio from different sources, chop em up, paste em around, and save. These programs can take audio from any source; downloading is just one way; there should be a Mic input on your computer; with Sound Forge that Mic input = plug in any audio output and you can rip it. Sound Forge has a direct 'Extract Audio from CD fuction; it shows you the tracks you highlight what you want and it rips it.

Are you to the point where you have an audio file on display on these editors? Saving these involves first, getting them all into the same format. Things records as .wav, MP3, Avi, WMA and other file types, but for many they convert everything to a high quality MP3, at least 128kB/sec, thats what you should save everything to.

That should be, on any platform, a 'Save As' fuction, with a drop down list of audio formats; .avi, .wma .Wav, MPEG [MPEG Layer 1-Version 3 = MP3].

Maybe im ahead of myself, I dont know what ya got, or know, but anyway; for MultiTrack recording; I use an actual Recorder [Boss BR-864], but for editing the product, and tweaking it EQ-ing, I Swear by Sound Forge.

Ignore the prices; eBay and other can get it for you Real Cheap. And Sound Forge 7.0 is the current one, so you can scoop up version of 6.0, which is just as good, just doesnt do video [it will rip audio from your DVDs no problemo.]

A link; somewhere on the site is a pretty cool tutorial video about DigiEditing Software in general.

Try Mp3 direct cut. If I understand what you want to do, this free utility does just exacvtly what you want. It's also really easy to use and figure out. If you haver any questions about finding or using it, PM me.

I have another audio editing question. I usually use MP3 Direct Cut to cut the older shows into smaller segments, so I can add them to the show log, and put individual bits in the file library. Normally, that program works great. However, I have a small handful of shows in MP3 that MP3 Direct Cut doesn't recognize. They are all files that are recognized by other audio programs and will play in MP3 players. I've tried using programs like Music Match and Audacity to convert the files to different bit rates. I've tried converting the MP3 files to WAV and back again. Nothing works. MP3 Direct Cut still won't recognize them.

Does anyone know of anything I can do to these files so that they are recognized by MP3 Direct Cut. In the alternative, does anyone know of any other cheap or free utility that is as easy to use for cutting a large MP3 file into segments?

I don't know anything about PC's... But I know a good basic waveform editor for the Mac is Sound Studio. It's free and can be downloaded from Felt Tip Software here. (http://www.felttip.com/products/soundstudio/)

Outside of that, there's of course the really high end audio editors, like Digital Performer and ProTools. If you want me to edit anything specific for you, I can. Just send me a PM.

[color=purple]Grrrrrrrr, still no closer to getting this done. I know exactly what I wanna do and the clips I wanna use, but am totally lost as to how. It's not even that killer of a bit, but now it's become Visionquest.

Mike, to answer your question, I have no experience with this at all. This is the 1st time I'm even trying it. Other times, it was WonderRay who did this stuff. I should've paid closer attention.

I just downloaded a free trial of Sound Forge and am gonna start from scratch. I'd really love to have this by tonight, but it's starting to look like a longshot.

If you (or anbody else in the know) wants to walk me through this like they would a 5 year old, please feel free to do so.

I'm pretty skilled in both Sound Forge and Acid (as well as 9000 other audio programs, but those two are the most user friendly that you'll have the easiest success with). Hit me with more specifics (either on the board, PM or e-mail) , and I'll walk you through whatever you need.

[color=purple]Awesome, thank you. Okay, in Sound Forge, under "file" I clicked "new" and opened up a test wav. Within that wav I isolated 2 seconds worth of audio that I wanna use later.

When I go to "file" again and click "save as" it doesn't save the 2 seconds, but rather the whole wav.

So, I guess that's the 1st thing I gotta learn how to do, how do i save what I've isolated?

OK, first things first, what do you mean when you say isolated. Are you deleting what you don't need, or markering off what you do need?

Second things second, silly question (in other words, don't be offended), are you sure you're doing a "save as" in wav format? Another cause might be the original file is write-protected, it may not allow you to overwrite it.

What I would do is highlight and cut or copy the 2 seconds you are looking to keep, then paste them to a new file instead of altering the existing wav.

I'm marking off what I need. And then clicking "save as" which I assumed saved those few seconds as a new wav. I guess that's not how it works?

I'll try the copy method, but where exactly would I paste it (meaning how do I start a new file)?

Thanks again.

EDIT: I copied, opened up a new file by clicking "new" under file (I'm brilliant like that), pasted it... and it plays back as if it inhaled helium (super fast and high pitched).

I still wanna learn how to do this, but am giving up for the day.

>File
>New

Should give you a blank wave pattern to start with.
I was confused by your "test wav" comment from before. What exactly are you getting when you open a New file?

BTW - I'm leaving work now, so don't be alarmed when it takes me forever to repond. I'm not ditching out on helping you, just commuting.

Hey if you'd like you can send me the audio and I'll do whatever you want me to do with it.

=

This happens with MP3s that are sampled at different rates; if you have a sound you want and you copy/cut and then paste it into something else; if they both weren't sampled at the same rate, you'll get what you describe above. I think I mentioned above about sample rates:

the standards go as low as 64kB/sec but that's pretty crappy. At minimum, 128kB/Sec.

Whatever... the thing is if this is the scenario you have to convert everything to the same thing, simple as opening any file, Save As, and then [for sound Forge, at least] there's a drop down list of rates; many use 128 as a default.

=

I'm marking off what I need.

=

OK, there's two kinds of edits; you highlight a section; you either hit the Scissors and chop it out [bye] or you go to the Edit Tab and use TRIM/CROP, which chucks everything But what you highlighted.

I'm assuming you got the assistance you needed from the others here on the board. If not, post back, and I'll help you out.
