I know how great the Beatles were, but to me The Stones rocked and as a kid I always had this argument with my Beatle loving friends. Anyone?
I know, I always like to be different! ;)

I like Stones better. Sympathy for the Devil, in my opinion, is one of the best songs ever written and better than anything the Beatles ever did. I also thought the Beatles were overrated and tend to go against the grain.

Please the Stones were an F'n garage band that put together a few good songs, while the Beatles revolutionized music.

The Beatle's music was a perfect blend of simple chord progressions, complex musical arrangements, and unique vocal harmonies.

The Stones laid down a riff, and hope to jam something out.

Plus I can't even take Mick Jagger seriously after I saw the Start Me Up video... GAY!!!!

Although I liked both, I thought the Beatles were better. The Stones had a rougher edge to them, and I didn't really get into them til the Let It Bleed album. The Stones wrote some better songs than the Beatles, but the Beatles had more songs I liked than the Stones. Gimme Shelter is one of the best songs ever written.

instrumental genious was not particularly important characteristic of Beatles music.

Do not mistake Harrison's minimalism with inability.

Harrison's fills were known for being distinctive. Think of his parts in A Hard Days Night, Harrison has his personal signature written all over Beatles songs without being overlly aggresive on the guitar. That in itself shows that the solo was not of central importance to the band, thus comparing Richards to Harrison in that way is not fair.

The Stones are legends, but the Beatles are Gods!!!!

While I will definately agree that Symphony is a great song... but there are MANY Beatles songs that are as great if not better. To this day, "In My Life" stands as the greatest song ever written.

I also thought the Beatles were overrated and tend to go against the grain.

The fact that the Beatles did "go against the grain" is what made them great. No Rock band... or any band for that matter... will ever make there mark without breaking the rules. Both the Stones and the Beatles broke the norms... I happen to feel the Beatles achievments in music were much more significant than the Stones.

Tom,
I can see that this discussion can turn into a religious diatribe. No one right and no one wrong.
Just for me, when you say rock and roll, I hear Stones!!
The Beatles were great but the Stones ARE great!! For a band to be around as long as they have been, they had to be doing something right.
I said this on a previous post, When I hear Richards play, I sometimes want to weep with joy. I never really felt that way with the Beatles but that's what makes the world go round.

I hear that brother.

When you say rock and roll I would agree that the Stones captured "Rock and Roll" more than the Beatles,

But overall musically, I am with the Beatles.

No one will ever win this debate, and there is no doubt that each band was great in there own right.

Maybe I can put a little more gas on this fire.

I kind of put the Stones with Led Zeppelin. Classic, massively popular bands that I basically can't stand. Sure, they have a couple songs that will flat-out put a boot in your ass, but for the most part I just don't see the attraction.

I'm not any kind of Beatles freak, but just about every song of theirs that I have heard I really dig. They don't "rock" as much as the Stones, but they are just so solid with the songwriting and the music.

As a sidenote, I hear that with Michael Jackson's financial troubles, he had to take out a huge loan that Sony guaranteed for him because he put the Beatles rights up as collateral. Sooo, if his next album tanks as expected, Sony will control the Beatles and we'll be hearing their music everywhere. And who cares if it is? Why are they so special and sacrosanct?

Led Zeppelin was by far the most innovative rock band ever!

Not only did all 4 members exhibit there musical virtuosity, but they were able to equally balance all four parts of there music in there arrangements.

The Stones were the epitome of Rock and Roll, and mentioning their later stuff like "Start Me Up" is naive and not fair. Let's face it..if the Beatles were still around, they would probably be writing commercial jingles.

TomPoo,

It takes a big man to admit when he is wrong, and I thank you for withdrawing the "overrated" comment.

As far as the mighty Zep is concerned, yes, a truly magnificent band, one of my all-time favorites. Amazing musicianship through and through. Jimmy Page is probably one of the most influential rock guitarists in history.

The reason they also take a back seat to the Stones in my book, though, is that while Zep did indeed touch on several different musical styles, no one, but NO ONE, comes close to the World's Greatest Rock 'N' Roll Band in that category. At their best, a Stones album would typically feature a hard rockin' song or 2, a soul number, something funky, a country tune, some blues, and a tasty ballad. Their ability to flow in and around such a myriad of musical styles is what cements their position as the greatest
ever.

What makes Stones great is the variety of their songs. And yes, The Beatles did do A LOT of pop music especially early in their career.

But still Peter Tork can beat all of the above with one hand tied behind hisback.

The beatles were the most influential band of all time bar none. Musicaly and culturally.

The stones rocked harder than the beatles. Varied styles and longevity. Mick Taylor was very influential on the stones style after the death of brian jones.

Zeppelin was the most influential hard rock band and changed the way bands were managed especially when it came to album promotions and the amount promoters made.

The monkees did have there place in television and music and the session musicians and writers did a good job. The music still holds up today. Get out the old records and put them on the turntable.

I would listen to all four of these bands before I would buy any of this crap that is out here today.

i forget who it was, but early on in this thread, somebody negatively compared george Harrison's guitar playing to keith richard's. now nothing against keith, i love the the stones, but playing-wise he is not nearly as good as george. He keeps his guitar in an open G tuning so that he can bang on it an it'll be in tune. that's fine for the stone's style of music, but it doesn't make you a virtuoso. Harrison, on the otherhand, was a fantastic all around musician. Could keith richards have written "here comes the sun" or "something"? He was also the first westerner to bring Indian music over, and he made it work.

For those of you who doubt me, listen to a keith solo album, then listen to "all things must pass"

But Keith still rocks and wrote some great music. OK, maybe Ry Cooder DID write the intro to "Honky Tonk Women"...

You guys are also forgetting that George Harrison was lead guitar for the Beatles and Keith Richard was RHYTHM guitar for the Stones...
Keith's tuning of his guitar was no doubt a way to play chords in an easier way...But you cannot argue with his method "LESS IS MORE"!
No doubt in my mind that the Beatles were and still are influential in popular music...But the The Rolling Stones were and will always be the WORLD'S GREATEST ROCK BAND...

End of discussion.

The Beatles were more influential to later bands, but the Stones rocked.
