the 4th generation will get rid of the 4 buttons in a row and use a click wheel like the mini iPod. And it now looks like the 1st and 2nd generation iPods (Are they doing a "retro" thing like Ford is doing with Thunderbird and Mustang? Is that even possible to be retro back to 2001?)

Battery will last longer (12 hours vs 6-8)

Price will drop according to newsweek (40GB for 399 20 GB for 299 no 15 GB model)

No mention of 60GB. Apple recently purchased a bunch of 60GB microdrives from Tosiba, people assumed it was for a new ipod. Perhaps they'll announce that later and it will be the 499 model.

40GB is plenty for me.

What do you guys think?

I like the look and functionality of the third gen iPod. Having those buttons in the wheel make it a little bit more prone to accidentally advancing to another track or worse. I mean, I've played with the iPod mini and I'm sure I'd figure out the feel of it and get used to the new button orientation, though I just prefer it the way the 3rd generation iPod is designed.

I don't get it... It looks exactly like the last 2 iPods (with the exception of the iPod mini), only they got rid of the 4 buttons... THIS is the next iPod that we've been waiting almost 2 years for? It took them 2 years to get rid of 4 buttons and up the battery life? That's retarded.

But seriously folks. This is like if Sony decided their next generation console, the PlayStation 3, is just a PS2 that is slightly smaller and glows in the dark. I mean, c'mon Apple... You could've added SOMETHING to this installment to make it irresistably cool and would make me wanna buy it. But it's just more of the same. I mean, the last 3 iPods have really just been slight upgrades of the previous model. I was satisfied with the first upgrade because the change in size was significant. But at this point, it's time for a rebirth of the iPod (like they did with the iMac). Do SOMETHING different to catch my interest. Anything... a color screen? New graphic interface? A built-in mic? Wireless web for streaming radio? Bluetooth? The ability to hover 10 feet above ground? Just something.

So you wouldn't complain if the look was totally different? I was sure people would be happy they kept the iPod signature white look.

Plus that 400 I was going to spend on a 20GB 3rd Gen ipod will now go towards a 40GB 4th Gen iPod with better battery life.

Didn't it take more than 2 years for Apple to change from the old iMac to the current flat screen iMac (I hear there is a big change in store for iMac when it gets the G5 chip this fall)

It's on sale now and shipping within 2 days. Retail stores should have it by the end of the week.

Mini iPod is still back ordered and going for more than $300 on eBay. The Apple Stores (retail stores owned by Apple) are selling the 3rd Generation 15GB for $249, and 3rd Gen 20GB and 40 GB for the same price as the 4th Gen 20 and 40, which is super retarded, sure it's $100 off the price last week, but people can get a better 20 or 40 for the same price)

I don't know, 60GB iPod is good. But it's thicker, heavier and will probably have less battery life (color screen)

Do people have a need to carry all their photo's around like they carry all their songs around? People seem to like the iPod because they can have all their songs with them on trips or comute to work. Do people want to look at snap shots on a 2 inch screen on the bus?

I guess that's all just a bonus since it reported to be a $499 iPod which is what some people paid for a 10 GB iPod back between March and July 2002.

BTW, those earphones that come with the iPod are shit. I could buy 20 pairs for $2 and still have some change for a coffee (hold the milk). I can't imagine the headroom on those things.

The future is now! You can already rip files at higher bit rates than the default itunes/ipod acc file rate. Along with MP3s you can use the "Apple Lossless Encoder" importing setting which is about 50% of the file size of a CD file. So an ACC encoded song that was 3.5 MB will be about 25 MB if ripped with ALE.

I'm not starting a new thread for this, because this kind of relates to the U2 Ipod. Can someone please explain to me, why, in the Ipod commercial, Bono counts off the numbers 1,2,3,14 in spanish? Is this a common thing that I'm not privy to?

Plus, I think this may one of the first times a song has been played out for me in a commercial. I have no desire to hear the full song.
