You go out of your way to criticize someone's policies, and then when you get a chance to actually meet with the guy, you refuse to do so.

Let the guy try and explain himself. If he can't, you've got him. If he can, maybe the two of you can work towards some kind of agreement that can be beneficial to both countries.

How is he a hypocrite here? Arafat didn't make similar statements. Chirac has met with Sharon numerous times before. He's not meeting with Arafat NOW as opposed to Sharon. I think it's safe to say Arafat never encouraged ANY Jews in the world to come to Israel. How exactly does ANYTHING with Arafat make Chirac a hypocrite on this specific issue addressed in the article?

That's due to an influx of Arabs into France. In the early days of Israel, France was actually their biggest supporter. They were fighting in Algeria, while Israel was fighting... everybody, so they had a common Arab enemy.
