I'm freaking out. This just sucks. I live in St. Pete right across the bay...totally in the Tampa market...and I can't really get the station in. I could cry! I was so looking forward to hearing the guys again but there's too much static and feedback.

Is there such a thing as an AM radio that does a better job of getting a station in? I can't believe this. :(

thanks.

Try grounding your connection to remove some static. I think boosting your signal will also boost the static.

You don't say what kind of radio you're using, or what environment (car, wood-framed house, steel office building) you're trying to listen in.

For the home, probably the most well-known receiver is the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000J061/ref%3Dpd%5Fsl%5Faw%5Falx-jeb-2-1%5Fce%5F2103823%5F3/102-8492866-3314503">GE Superadio III</a>. Relatively inexpensive and highly thought of. See also http://mysite.verizon.net/vze20h45/radio/superadio/gesr_faq.html

If you have a radio that has external AM antenna terminals you might try something nearly free: hook a hunka wire to one of them. All an antenna is, is wire or some sort of electrical conductor. Without getting into antenna design at all, bigger (more wire) is usually better. And if you can ground the other terminal, then do so. Usually the center screw of your electrical outlet cover is grounded, if you have 3-prong outlets. Be careful around electricity, of course.

If your radio doesn't have provisions for an external antenna you might just try moving it around. Turn it this way and that, seeing whether your reception improves.

Look around for sources of electrical interference. Fluorescent lights and computers are notorious noisemakers. If you can move your radio farther away from them you'll be in better shape. Try turning them off first to see if they're the problem.

Try Googling "AM radio reception improvement" or similar words. Lots of people out there are in the same boat as you are, and many have posted pages dealing with their experiences.

Good luck - let us know what you find.

Here's an article (http://www.nrcdxas.org/articles/noise.html) on eliminating AM noise. That's usually half the battle. As Late2 mentioned, it might also be as simple as rotating the radio or hooking up an external antenna.

Art Bell fans will remember the C. Crane comapny ads. Well, they sell great stuff, including a whole line of AM Antennas and Signal Boosters.

But as others have mentioned, first do everything you can. AM anntenas are almost always

-inside the radio, and
-highly directional

Just spinning the radio around shows this. Also get it as far away from Sources of Noise; Computers and other electronics nearby can just wipe out everything.

Thanks you guys! I will do all of the above and let you know what works. Pretending Ron and Fez aren't here is not an option so I may have to sit in the park across the street from 7-11 (but there are some scary guys in there)

I want to carry Fez around in my pocket.

I have a lot of noise listening to AM radio stations in my car. Is there something I can do to fix this, other than not listen to AM radio?

Of course I'm not trying to tune in to Ron and Fez from here in New York (even though I'd love to from my car), but in general I'd like to be hear AM radio in my car, though I get a lot of noise and static.

Rotate your car to a different direction. This may make your trips a tad longer, but should improve your reception.

Happy listening!

The Noise is created by your car, everybodies car sends out some radio noise, some deal with it better then others.

Yes, but the car stereo I had prior to the one I have now had great reception. I'm just curious if there's a way to enhance it.

I enhance my listening pleasure by stipping down to my underwear and drinking a glass of Ovaltene, but that's just me.
