Dr. Culto sees a hit on the horizon!

First Team America Pics Revealed Source: IGN Filmforce Tuesday, July 20, 2004 The first pictures from Trey Parker and Matt Stone's Team America: World Police have turned up online at IGN Filmforce. Paramount will promote the marionette superhero film at this week's San Diego Comic-Con, ahead of a release in theaters in October. The $20 million action-comedy-musical would serve as an R-rated comic tonic to the barrage of election news this fall. The story, written by South Park writers Parker, Stone and Pam Brady, centers on a prototypical action hero who's drafted to help Team America thwart the world's evil forces. Yeah, I posted about this in another thread already. Originally they were going to do a complete remake of The Day After Tomorrow with marionettes, scene for scene, line for line. That would have been hilarious, and a much better, if not brilliant, skewering of big budget, CGI bloated movies. But the suits said they couldn't so Parker and Stone changed it to the World Police story. It'll still be good, I'm sure, but not the hilarity that it once could have been.

There's not much there. But it looks like they go after Michael Moore hard, which is surprising seeing as Matt Stone appeared in Bowling in Columbine and I heard that Stone and Parker did the cartoon in that film as well.

That is actually just a rumor. I thought it at first, too, since the animation was similar to South Park and Stone was in it, but it wasn't them. A guy named Harold Moss directed "A Brief History of the United States of America." Stone's scene was one of the few I did agree with. It was in poor taste to visit Denver. The NRA's excuse was that it was already scheduled long before, etc., but still in bad taste.

Isn't it ironic that the Thunderbirds are coming out with a live action, special effects movie at about the same time that this comes out?

Doesn't a certain amount of time have to pass for a film to acheive "cult" status? I mean you can't call this a "cult" film because it hasn't even been released yet!

When did they say that? I've never really associated them with any kind of political ideology, except for maybe libertarianism. They seem to have a healthy dislike for all politicians and political celbrities. I just thought that since Stone appeared in a Moore film that they didn't have that bad an opinion of him. Of course, Moore has really ratched up his act lately.

In "Team America," they take aim at sanctimonious right-wing nut-jobs and smug Hollywood liberals alike.

Alec Baldwin, for example, emerges as a villain almost as evil as Kim Jong Il. Sean Penn and Danny Glover take up arms to fight beside Mr. Kim, with Mr. Penn crying "Die, conservative!" before blowing away a Team America member.

Mr. Kim, for his part, feeds the international weapons inspector Hans Blix to his sharks. (They used real sharks for that scene.) But not before he croons a song about the solo life of an absolute dictator: "I'm so Rone-ry."

The American agents are barely more sympathetic. Along with Gary, a leading American actor recruited to their cause, the team wears glittery red-white-and-blue outfits and drives a Humvee as a pulse-pounding, patriotic anthem laced with expletives and exclamation points plays.

The current version of the film is a guaranteed NC-17, with surprisingly graphic scenes of puppet sex. The filmmakers will have to cut it to an R rating, but not before they have their fun torturing the ratings board.

Is it far-fetched to have them fighting alongside our enemies?

And is anyone surprised to see the NY Times panning this?

Yes. Unless you believe that dissent from government policy is tantamount to treason, which I think you don't.

And is anyone surprised to see the NY Times panning this?

It isn't panning it. It's not a review, it's an interview with the guys and some history of the production.

Parker and Stone also have a history of broad social criticism, and often portray stereotypes to mock both the purveyors of those stereotypes and their subjects. I doubt this is going to fit anyone's ideology, but ridicule ideology in general, and as many other subjects and people that they can fit in. I applaud that. I have high hopes that this is going to be a big laugh at the expense of the bitter electorial frenzy as it hits its peak. They'll probably get more write-in votes than Nader.

Or it will suck.

Yes. Unless you believe that dissent from government policy is tantamount to treason, which I think you don't.
This is gonna veer into a political discussion in the Entertainment section, but here goes. There's a difference between dissent and supporting the enemy. People like Michael Moore choose the latter when they classify the people kiling our troops as "Minutemen." If Lindbergh is a Nazi, then surely Penn is at least his equal, if not worse. After all, Lindbergh offered to serve after World War II began.
It isn't panning it. It's not a review, it's an interview with the guys and some history of the production.
I only read your excerpts since I don't subscribe to the Times, but it appeared to be a review.

It was just a feature about Matt and Trey and Team America. Basically, the only reason they wanted to do it because they thought it would be easy. It turned out the marionettes were a pain in the ass. They still aren't done with it and are wishing they didn't do it in the first place. They started out trying to make a Jerry Bruckheimer movie parody, but they ended up also pretty much attacking everybody, left or right-wing. They say they're sick and tired of feeling like they always have to take sides, which leads to them attacking everybody. They basically admit they're miserable

I read the essay where Michael Moore used the term "Minutemen" and I can't argue with you on that. He was over the line on that one. While I don't think he wishes ill on our troops, (I just think he expects it), he's diminishing the fact that the insurgents are the worst scum of Iraqi society by comparing them to American Revolutionaries. For that, fuck him. I won't defend him.

Penn, you'd have to show me the comparison.

Well, him going over to Iraq just before the war and trying to pass it off as hunky-dory sure didn't help.

I think the Lindbergh comparison is apt in that regard, given that boths were attempts to see the "lighter side" of what amounted to be a much greater "evil."

Sneak Preview is this Saturday, Oct. 9th. I'm buying tickets. It's playing at a lot of theaters for the sneak preview. Apparently they had to remove lots of full-on puppet sex and people pissing on each other to get the R rating.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone's new film "Team America" has averted an NC-17 rating and snagged an R after undergoing a few choice cuts -- including the loss of a "golden shower" scene between two marionnettes. "It's a back-and-forth with the ratings board," Parker commented. "We love the golden shower, but I guess they said no to that. But I just love that they have to watch it. Seriously, can you imagine getting a videotape with just a close-up of a puppet bleephole, and you have to watch it?"

Review: Team America: World Police

http://www.browntownjohnny.com/index.php

Big Budget! Big Money! Big Action! Hot Sex Scenes! PUPPETS!.......Fuck yeah..Puppets on strings that talk like the guys from South Park. "Team America" is created by SP guys Trey Parker and Matt Stone, is the best 'potty mouthed' movie since John Waters' "A Dirty Shame" (2 weeks ago). It also ins the best comedy to come along in a very long time for so many reasons. A dead -on parody of Gerry Anderson's 60's classic shows like " Thunderbirds are Go" and "Fireball XL5", a cheesy but brilliant collection of fantasy action with marionettes. "Team America" is also a sharp, hateful, and pointed attack on Hollywood action movies. Fuck Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer! Fuck yeah! They deserve it.

With a top team of set designers, puppet makers (Choido Brothers did "Killer Klowns from Outer Space"), and photography (Matrix guy Bill Pope), Stone and Parker have a real fun time making fun of big budget slop like ' Top Gun' and 'The Rock' along with the trimmings (country artists doing 'feel good to be American' pap, bad gay Broadway, montage 'workout' scenes, stupid actors who may be homosexual). The other end is attacking 'liberal' actors who belong to the "Film Actors Guild" (F.A.G. members-Clooney-Hunt-Baldwin-Penn-Robbins and Sarandon). All this and musical numbers like "The Whole World Has Aids" "Freedom Has A Price...a buck .05" and the theme song "America..Fuck Yeah!".

The story is about a police action team of good looking puppets who are out to stop terror across the globe. The will stop at nothing to kill them, even blowing up the Eiffel Tower and The Great Pyramids. Evil Korean Leader Kim Jung Il is fronting world terror, he is now the target of Team America but they need to train a new member named Gary Johnston (the worlds greatest actor). Team Honcho Spottswood (a jab at hack director Roger Spotteswood) entrusts Gary with the hard task (and will accept a blowjob to insure his loyalty). Fellow team guys and gals have strong feelings about each other (with good puppet fucking). They all are now in danger and Gary can save them from a little Korean dictator that sings sometimes.

I thought the puppet joke got silly after the first half (no need for a sequel) and some of the jokes are easy laughs (the best one is a puke joke). The Michael Moore joke was dumb, and the awful crass tasteless language gets stupid after a while. But the script is on target (mostly) and it is truly original. Cool Movie for the new millennium. BTJ says "Enjoy..Fuck yeah!"

Saw it last night. A bit of a let down. I enjoyed it, but I expected something of the calibur of Bigger, Longer and Uncut, and it wasn't close. I'm glad it wasn't a disaster; the way Matt and Trey were talking about it this summer made me fear it would be awful, but then everyone started talking about how good it was, and my expectations went up. Just everything about it from the songs to the jokes was a level below the South Park movie. I might pick it up on DVD.

I gotta see this movie. Everything I here, even things that people have talked about as negatives, make me want to see it. I'll probably love it because it really comes off as something that is just good ridiculous fun.

While I don't think he wishes ill on our troops, (I just think he expects it), he's diminishing the fact that the insurgents are the worst scum of Iraqi society by comparing them to American Revolutionaries. For that, fuck him. I won't defend him.

Yeah, from what I've heard about that, it came off as similar to Bill Maher's comment about the 9/11 highjackers being brave. Knowing that its Michael Moore, I'm sure that it came off as really exaggerated and slimy sounding, but just based on the sentiment, I can only say that its one of those things that isn't very nice to hear, but there lies a little truth in it.

Bringing that back to the thread, does anyone know what Michael Moore's response to the movie is? Matt and Trey have said on Conan and elsewhere that they got mad at Michael Moore because he lead people, as HBox had been, to believe that Matt and Trey did the cartoon in "Bowling for Columbine".

I'd be interested if Moore just made a pussified version of Sean Penn's response. I guess them fighting on the side of Kim-Jong-Il is just the type of thing that is obviously supposed to be ridiculous but if its you being called evil, you can't really sit by and take it. It would be kinda hard to just tell Sean Penn to accept that a movie will portray him as being a traitor.

I think Michael Moore will have a sense of humor about it, or at least have the common sense not to say anything publicly, as will most of the celebs in the film. I just want to know what Matt Damon did to piss them off so much.

The monologue at the end about has to be the funniest thing I've heard in a movie in the longest time.

My thoughts exactly. The South park movie had a better message, better songs, and was all around funnier. But this one had its moments.

Nothing as far as I know. I read an article, either in the Boston Globe or Herald where they asked them about this and Matt and Trey were actually pretty complimentary of him that he's a good sport and whatnot. What apparently happened was that they were making dolls of the celebrities and one of the guys who made the Damon doll didn't really do it to make it into him though when it was done he felt that it looked like him, so he went to Matt and Trey and showed them. They didn't agree that it looked like him, that it looked more like a retarded Matt Damon, and from there the character was born. If I find the article on it I'll post it. It was pretty funny.

Here's a little bit on why they made the Matt Damon character the way they did...

CS!: Who did the voice for Matt Damon?
Parker: Actually, we both did.
Stone: We both did parts, but that's not a very tough voice. Anyone could have done that one.
Parker: The way that happened was funny, too. That wasn't in the script. We started getting the puppet molds back for the actors, but you can only use one skull that these faces go over, so sometimes you'd get a puppet that looked close and sometimes you just didn't. I remember the Matt Damon one we were supposed to shoot that day, and the puppeteers came down and were like "Here's Matt Damon!" and we were like "Dude! That doesn't look like Matt Damon! He looks retarded!" Honestly, out of all those people, we've met Matt Damon before, and he's actually a pretty cool guy and a talented actor. It's just because his puppet was screwed up that he got voiced that way.
Stone: It just shows that it's totally not personal.

Really pissed that i spent my money to see this stupid movie. If i wanted to hear the word "buttfucker" 50x over and funny accents to boot i would have just rented the SP movie.

I laughed here and there but the scenes that were supposed to be the funniest were downright overdone. The initial puppet sex was funny until they flashed 4,5,6, however many positions following it, just killed any and all humor in it and the same with the vomitting scene.

The songs were horrendous, "Aids Aids Aids AidsAidsAidsAidsAids", WE GET IT!!! . "I'm so ronrey", 'cause that accent didn't get old after 2 minutes of screentime.

Chirst, i really want my money back.

I totally agree with you 100%. Now if only I could get my $9.00 bucks back and watch the Forgotten instead (I wonder if that movie was better).

Definitely not the case with Helen Hunt.

uhh they didnt say buttfucker

i think this was nothing like a south park show/movie, i think in TA there was more subtle jokes than in SP that would go straight out and say something

I wouldn't classify "suck my cock" jokes and the like as subtle humor.

Maybe that's just me though.
