View Full Version : What's your favorite Spielberg film?

As far as I can tell, there's never been a thread asking that question on the board.

I just finished watching "Empire of The Sun" for the upteenth time, and it still boggles my mind that that it's basically his most ignored and "forgotten" film, when it's easily his best outside of "Schindler's List," at least in my opinion.

What blew my mind even more is finding out that the film is based on what author J.G. Ballard went through during his own youth in China. For those not familiar with him, he's best described as Chuck Palahniuk before there was Chuck Palahniuk.

Anyway, I love "Empire" because it best demonstrates what I love about Spielberg as a filmmaker...the guy just loves making films with a passion, and it shows on the screen. I mean, a lot of directors love the craft, but Spielberg still seems to have this almost child-like passion when it comes to flat-out being in love with the magic of movies. It's like there's always this sense of, "I can't believe I can do this, this is so cool" to his films, even if they're not that great ("Amistad," "1944," "Hook," I'm looking at you three).

So, yeah, Spielberg is a big "obvious" director, but I find myself watching his films over and over again. Few people get to be as "big" as he is and still retain an obvious passion for filmmaking.

What's everyone else's favorite Spielberg film?

Post-"Duel," of course....

I'm afraid I will have to go the obvious route and say Raiders. And there's nothing I can really add to that.

Did Stevie have anything to do with the masterpiece: Breakin' 2: Electric Bugaloo?

One of those few, like The Godafther, where the sequel surpasses the original.

Meh.

I had actually typed "1941," and then went back and changed it to "1944." For some reason I thought making a comedy about America being attacked by the Japanese BEFORE Pearl Harbor would have been really stupid.

Well, turns out I was right.
