Horde King: you seem to be able to find or know an answer to anything that I could ever want to know. So what Im REALLY curious about is whats up with Veins? What are they made up of?

GWEN - I'll assume you just want some general information about veins, instead of details about varicose and spider veins. If you want some information on those just let me know.

Veins have three layers: an outer layer of tissue, muscle in the middle, and a smooth inner layer of epithelial cells (This is a form of a membranous cellular tissue that produce secretions.

Veins transport waste-rich (oxygen depleted) blood back to the lungs and heart. To keep the waste blood moving in the correct direction, the veins contain a series of valves that prevent backflow.

The waste-rich blood that flows through the veins has a purplish color since it lacks oxygen. The veins are thin so you can see the waste blood through the skin as a bluish color particularly in the wrists hands and ankles.

veins carry blood to the heart (TV) and arteries go away from the heart (AA). Those little pneumonic tricks that just stick with you.

Gwen, some serious conditions can happen in veins. One is called a DVT, deep vein thrombosis. It's a clot in the deep vein of an extremity. Some symptoms include pain/cramping, redness, soreness, swelling/edema, and heat arising from the afflicted area. Treatment for an acute DVT include anti-coagulation therapy such as the drug Coumadin and Heparin. They act pretty much like a blood thinner. In conjunction, the application of elastic support stockings on the knee-to-thigh areas if the DVT is in the leg. DVT's mostly develop from an injury to an extremity or is a post-surgery condition. It happens because of prolonged bed rest or if someone is bed-ridden for some time. The blood remains static in the vein, the proteins and fibrin can solidify and become a thrombus/clot. If a thrombus breaks loose from the vein and travels to the lungs, it can cause a life-threatening pulmonary embolism. Even if it stays put, however, it can jeopardize the affected limb or organ by obstructing venous blood flow. That's why it's important to diagnose a DVT early on by ultrasound or a venogram. I'm an ultrasound technologist by trade and I used to get called into the emergency room 24/7 for such cases.

Trust me, fucking brains is not pleasant after the first few strokes.

But then again, most of us only need a few strokes anyway. Damn my operation!
