This is a tough call for me. I've been a huuuuuge fan since back in the day. I listened to nothing but Enter the Wu for at least a solid year after it came out. It was like a musical epiphany, seriously. I think I'm gonna have to go with the Rza. I mean he is the brains behind the clan, producing the tracks and laying down the beats. He played a huge role in revolutionizing/creating the East Coast sound of the early 90's, the effects of which you can still here on most hip hop albums today, crappy imitations, but still there.
As far as rhyming and mic skills, I just don't know. It's probably a toss up between Ghost Face and the Gza. If you listen to the freestyle sessions, both of them are insane. I think I'm gonna give it to the Gza in the end though. Plus you always gotta give it up to Ol' Dirty, just because he's Ol' Dirty, or Big Baby Jesus, or Dirt McGurk, or just Russell Jones. Any one of them is just flat out funny, and a great MC to boot.

I'd have to go with the GZA. I liked his stuff the best and think he's been the most consistent on his solo albums. Most of the solo Wu albums have been one or two singles, 10 mostly unlistenable tracks and the infamous Intro and Outro but I thought the GZA's were better top to bottom.
I used to dig Meth's stuff, but it's like he ceased to be a person a while ago and is now just a cartoon character.

My (and probably a lot of people's) favorite ODB moment had to be when ODB piled all his kids and his wife into the limo for the food stamps. They were drinking champagne while ODB's going on about food stamps being free money and then he pissed on the sidewalk.

Ghostface is my favorite MC out of the Clan, and he's had the most consistently good solo albums, though I think GZA's "Liquid Swords" is THE best singular Wu solo project.
ODB's first two albums are brilliant, no matter what anyone says.
I'm just glad I'm not the only person out there still buying the Wu albums.

RZA, without his production skills Wu-Tang would never have hit like they did, individually, or as a group. Enod of Story.

Yeah, but his solo albums blow the big one...and his rhyming is pretty average.
Biggest Wu letdown? Inspectah Deck. After the second album, I thought his solo stuff would be phenomenal.
Wrong.

his rhyming is pretty average.
There's a freestyle cut of his out there where he just sounds like a stuttering prick. Awful.
That being said, his contribution to the group cannot be overstated. If the one of the others wasn't there, sure it would be a loss, but without the Rza there would be no Wu-Tang, period, exclamation point, question mark, another exclamation point, and a tilde.

RZA, without his production skills Wu-Tang would never have hit like they did, individually, or as a group. Enod of Story.
But from what I've read, it's also been his compulsive behavior about controlling the group that's kept it fragmented and the members distrustful. And what was with that whole "Boby Digital" thing? That album sucked.

I'm pretty sure it's Rakeem Diggs, but whatever. And I'm not saying his rhyming is bad horrible horrible. The Gravediggaz stuff, in particular, is really really good. I really enjoyed him on that. He's just not on the same level as an MC as the rest of them. He certainly makes up for it in other ways, though.
And as far as his compulsive control of the group; somebody's got to be the asshole, especially with such a diverse group of characters, personalities and egos. Think of what it must be like trying to get ODB into the studio, let alone everyone else. And he must be doing something right, because of their success. Imagine if one of the others, let's just say ODB 'cause it's funny, was 'the leader'. It wouldn't be the Wu Tang Clan, it would be the fucking Keystone Cops Clan. They'd all just be running around the studio bumping into each other and banging off the walls.

RZA definitely deserves credit for keeping them together for as long as they've been around and as relatively focused as they've managed to remain. I mean, at any given time, there's technically been ELEVEN(!) goddamn members, which is huge for for ANY kind of musical group, no matter what the genre, but with rap? Forget it, that's a headache he's a brave, brave man for trying to deal with.
I loved the post 9/11 lyrics on the last group album. They're the only hip-hop group that can be doing political shit one song, then rapping about comic books and old kung-fu movies the next.

I was going by this Time Interview
In Tearz, off the first album, he's telling the story of his little brother getting gunned down and there's 2 points in the song that refer to his name:
"Hey Ra, remember that kid you bust?" and
"Girls screaming the noise up and down the block, 'Hey Rakeem, you're little brother got shot.'"
So I dunno. Maybe Time screwed up, maybe he changed it, maybe Rakeem is a nickname. Who knows? "Not I," said the big, red balloon.

Before Wu Tang, RZA called himself Prince Rakeem. He had a semi-hit single called "We Love You Rakeem" (I think that was the name.) VERY differnt then Wu Tang. But I think his birth name is Robert.
