in the modern era, with several 24 hour news channels and campaigning that begins 2years in advance, conventions are redundant.
end them. it's an antiquated tradition from the 19th century.

Ah, Social Security. The only government program that actually works, so everyone is sure that its gonna stop working soon. If we make some adjustments, it will continue to work. I think everyone discounts how incredibly expensive it will be to privatize, unless you just want to cut off all the current and soon-to-be retirees.
EDIT: Oh yeah, don't forget to create a new program for disability insurance that Social Security currently provides.

Burr and Hamilton don't count, since they weren't running for president at the time, which was the criteria that was the basis for the original question.
Does anyone have a shred of evidence RFK was killed on orders or planning of his opposing candidate? Of course not. It's so much easier to scream "fire" without bothering to see if one was started in the first place.
Naive? Better than subjecting myself to baseless, evidence-free, alarmist paranoia. Contrary to what people want to think, these kind of empty conspiracy theories usually end up cheapening the deaths of the people involved, as opposed to making them "about something."

Aww shucks, Mojo, I was joking.
On topic (for once), I only heard a bit of it, but Gore did sound really good. I was impressed that most of his comments on 2000 were along the lines of "if you were unhappy about it, get out there this time and vote and make sure others do." To me, that's positive and aggressive campaigning.

Mojo, I wasn't referring to United States. There hasn't been any assinations of a US president or presidential candidate "proven" to be politically motivated...although many suggest JFK was taken out and replaced by a war friendly president...
That being said, there are hundreds examples of coup d'etat and assassinations around the world. Why are we any different? Who knows how many up-and-coming political stars met thier end by "heart attack", "stroke",etc.
I don't put the baser instinct of man's neverending quest for power past the political elite of this country.

See what I mean?
Senator Wellstone was a great man, and a passionate social activist, yet people would rather attempt to falsely inflate his death with ludicrous conspiracy theories as opposed to celebrating his life and the issues he fought for throughout it.
I mean, it makes zero sense. A conspiracy that would leave ZERO (And that is what we usually deal with in these theories, be it someone like JFK or Wellstone) evidence would logically require a massive amount of manpower, inside knowledge, connections, money, resources and time. Why would somebody (Or a group of people) with THAT much influence and power want to take out somebody as low-level as Wellstone? I'm a huge fan of the man, and was tremendously saddened by his death, but I'm not ging to be foolish enough to presume he was a big enough fish in the political pond to rate that kind of operation. Conspiracies like this ALWAYS have people leaping from point A to point Z without bothering to fill in anything in between. To the theorists, it's only the ASSUMPTIONS that matter, not what they can actually prove.
JFK's death is an even better example of how when even someone who IS a "big fish" in the American political system gets knocked off, it's usually NOT the work of some far-reaching top-level conspiracy. Despite countless theories, guesses and assumptions, not a single shred of conclusive evidence has come up in 40 years that can definitively prove anything beyond a lone shooter killing JFK. And if it's supposedly as far-ranging as some have made it out to be, what are the odds that NOTHING has been found in four decades that can actually prove a seperate theory?
I'm not saying politicians aren't ever murdered or killed, but is it such a quick assumption that these MASSIVE conspiracies exist to take these guys out, and none of them can EVER be proven? Just once, I want the mythical "JFK-level" conspiracy in America actually proven. I've yet to see it happen.
Just for fun, here's ye olde JFK assassination thread... (http://www.ronfez.net/messageboard/viewmessages.cfm/CurrentPage/7/forum/87/Topic/32257/RequestTimeout/500)

terrorist won't hit either candidate.
If they hit Bush, then that'll make him a marytar and push sympathies to the right.
If they hit Kerry, it'll push symapties to the left, however there wouldn't be enough time for people to get to know a new candidate and they'ed probably stay with bush.
that's my take on it. I think they'd hit another target near the election to make Bush seem ineffective towards Homeland Security.

so a successful Terrorist strike on US soil will only make Bush "seem" innefective towards homeland security?
What's the reality if they successfully hit something? That Bush is great on homeland security, but because there's a terrorist attack, and a successful one at that, it creates an "illusion" of inefectiveness?

Bitching by everyone that came up (Bill did the best out of them... he tryed to stray away from direct hits to Bush although I did leave the room for a bit... damn his speach was long as ass). The worst was when the fat lesbo senator came out to talk about how women in the senate are somehow superior to men because they had to "fight for it". It got really boring. I turned it off after Gabe played his violin to "Amazing Grace" and everyone got all teary eyed. I saw C-SPAN was going to run Hillary and Bill again at 4:15 and bam I went back to Conan to catch the last interview of the overnight re-run.

No stupid, meaningless, overused anti-war or anti-Bush slogans. He seems pretty intelligent, or that he at least knows what he's talking about. He pretty much admitted that a lot of celebrities don't know what the fuck they are talking about. He sounded like he was studying over a Thesaurus before the interview. Chris Matthews seemed annoyed to interview him at first, but seemed shocked by the end and broguht him back for a second segment. It was really amazing. He may suck as an actor, but at the very least he's knowledgable about politics.

Hey Mojo, could it stand to reason that if you were capable enough to take out a president you wouldn't be so sloppy as to leave behind a paper trail?
C'mon. You honestly believe Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, JFK all died by the hands of citizens with gripes? It's very unusual, not to mention extremely difficult, for a citizen to plan and execute the assination of the president of the United States.

C'mon. You honestly believe Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, JFK all died by the hands of citizens with gripes? It's very unusual, not to mention extremely difficult, for a citizen to plan and execute the assination of the president of the United States.
Are you kidding me? In the times when those men were killed, it was incredibly easy to assassinate a president. Hell, up until WW1, people off the street could make appointments to meet with the president in his office. They could mill about on the front lawn (Where a market was set up daily) and basically wander into the mansion whenever they wanted to. It was supposed to be the "people's house," and the idea of sealing it off from the public, and even surrounding the president with guards was seen as insulting to the democratic values of the young country.
Except for Lincoln, most of the presidents up until the World Wars travelled around without ANY kind of security. Lincoln only had it "for real" during the Civil War, and by the time he was shot in Ford's Theater, he was down to having only one armed soldier escorting him, who was officially "off duty" once he had safely delivered Lincoln to the theater box that night, and was happily getting shitfaced at a nearby bar while Abe was getting plugged.
Even as late as 1963, with Kennedy, presidents were still very vulnerable. The open motorcade that Kennedy was killed in was something presidents then did all the time. Kennedy himself was incredibly fatalisitc, and even remarked the day before he was killed that all it would have taken to kill him was "someone in an office building with a rifle."
Like the sinking of the Titanic, it was only with Kennedy's death (Technically the only president the Secret Service ever "lost," as that they didn't actually exist when the other presidents were killed) that the system was drastically overhauled to prevent tragedies that had been possible for far too long.
I'm not saying conspiracies aren't possible. Conspiracies are any plot with more than one person involved. Lincoln was killed by a conspiracy (The others were supposed to also take out the VP and the Secretary of Defense that night, or help provide escape to the south). A conspiracy of two gunmen tried to kill Harry Truman when he was president. These things DO happen. But nobody assumes the middle ground. It's like I said, leaping from point A to point Z with no stopping in between.
Could JFK have been killed by a conspiracy? Of course. Is there any concrete evidence that has come even close to proving that such a thing happened? After 40 years so far, not at all. History has a knack for laying open past indiscretions...time has that power. Researchers removed from the incident can analyze what happened with the even eye of historical study. If there is some nefarious truth to be found, at least a shred of something concrete would have been located at this point. Yet it has not done that with any of the assassinations you've listed. This is not some kind of anomaly. Could it be because there's ultimately nothing to these kinds of wild speculations?
Why are all of our normal "rules" of research and investigation tossed out the window when it comes to ambiguous accusations towards a shadowy "them?"
Wishing for something to be true...or assuming that it's true...does not make it so.
I DON'T take these things at face value. I've bothered to take the time to research the entire overview of the history of these events over the years, something most conspiracy buffs don't bother to do in the first place. They just want to focus on the "dirt," be it provable or not, and nothing more. Why bother with dull facts and research when one can just spout sensationalism and not have to back it up at all? I got into THIS current mentality after spending a good decade trying to believe EVERY conspiracy under the sun. Sometimes you eventually hit the wall when you stick with something that fruitless.
Indulge your nation's history, Jeff. You'll find these men's deaths are frig

Back...and to the left Mojo...back and to the left.
Just because you studied the available de-classified/public knowledge evidence doesn't mean you know the whole story. The movie JFK attacks the physics of the JFK assination, namely the magic bullet theory, as it has been explained by our government and proved it to be mathematically impossible. I mean, Costner went on for what seemed like a half hour. He even cried at the end. I mean, if Kevin Costner is wrong, I don't wanna be right.
Ehh, it'll all come out eventually. Then all the conspiracy theorists out there will blow thier heads off...back and to the left...

Yes as was stated before, he ran in 1980. He challenged Carter for the nomination but bailed after a few months.
Not only did Chappaquiddick kill his Presidential aspirations but it probably cost him the Senate Majority Whip/Leader spot(s) (which Klansman Byrd won).
Mel Carnahan died in a plane crash, and John Ashcroft lost in an election against his smoldering corpse.
It certainly helps when you keep polling places in the Democratic stronghold of St. Louis open hours after polls should have been closed. Ashcroft had a case to challenge the legality of that but chose not to.

and Garfield was killed by a guy promised patronage by his campaign
Except he was never promised anything. The guy decided all on his own to stump for Garfield, and expected to be granted a government job out of the blue when Garfield won the election, as if he had assured his winning. He was never promised anything, and never met with anyone who could promise anything. He wrote letters to government officials implying he was owed work, but that was about it. In short, the guy was a loon, and made the entire promise up in his head. Guiteau, I believe his name was.
http://www.historyhouse.com/in_history/guiteau/
But, you're right about the doctors. Garfield most likely would have survived the actual shooting had his doctors not infected the wound with their constant probing of it with unwashed fingers and medical instrument. Alexander Graham Bell even attempted to use an early version of the metal detector to locate the bullet, but to no avail. When all was said and done, I think Garfield actually ended up dying a couple months after he was shot.
By the time Garfield died on September 19, his doctors had turned a three-inch-deep, harmless wound into a twenty-inch-long contaminated gash stretching from his ribs to his groin and oozing more pus each day. He lingered for eighty days, wasting away from his robust 210 pounds to a mere 130 pounds. The end came on the night of September 19. Clawing at his chest he moaned, "This pain, this pain," while suffering a major heart attack. The president died a few minutes later.
http://www.eyewitnesstohistory.com/gar.htm
Here's the odd thing about presidential assassination conspiracy theories...they tend to be championed by those with "liberal" political leanings, yet with the exception of Boothe and his cronies, all of the presidential assassins have been about as "lefty" as possible. But the conspiracy theories always seem to try and swing the blame back to "right wing-ish" individuals and organizations. Go figure.

Gosh, I didn't know the level of boredom could increase as the week went on.
I have a few things to say about last night very quickly because honestly, I couldn't stand watching the whole night.
Thirteen Year Old President of Kerry Cock Suckers- Please go back to your friends who listen to N Sync. I couldn't stand this girl. I'm not denying her the right to an opinion, but when you have NOTHING to add to a rally please keep your mouth closed. First off, what girl gets a "time-out" at age thirteen? Maybe she should look at her own side and see what people are saying. I'm not saying Cheney didn't curse, but WHO GIVES A FUCK? Does that void his political agenda and opinions?
Dean- Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!! Not very interesting besides the parts where he poked fun at his own retardedness. He did an okay job.
The Respectable Mr. Edward Kennedy- I COULD NOT STAND TO WATCH THIS GUY. A THIRTY MINUTE SPEECH? GOD BLESS ALL 400 POUNDS OF HIM.
Tom Daschle- eh
Teresa Heinz Kerry- Nothing I didn't expect. She went on about being a strong women (great!!) And of course her experience is from her "humble beginnings".
Barack- I've never heard of this guy until a few days ago. Background, anyone? How has he barged in here so unheard of. He's like a national star now.

McKinley was killed by an anarchist
Ah, the great ironies of assassination... the assassin's goal and the ultimate result. McKinley chooses Roosevelt as VP so he can't cause trouble in NY, then he ascends to the highest office in the country. Czolgosz kills McKinley becuase he wants to shrink government and in the process ushers in one of the most powerful (and best, IMO) presidents in history.

Same goes for Oswald, if one buys that he likely did the shooting because of Kennedy's earlier policies towards Cuba and Castro. When JFK was killed, all indications he was on the verge of arranging secret peace talks with Castro himself that would have ceased the US invasion/assassination attemtps if they had succeeded...and no doubt lifted the trade embargo that effectively crippled Cuba as a third world nation to this day.
Way to go, Ozzie.

That's also another of my favroite Teddy stories. His metal glasses case and folded up speech(it was like 140 pages) stopped most of the bullet but it still went in him...
He still gave the speech. After being shot. With the bullet still in him. And blood all over his suit and tie....

Cool, and well done Gary, they loved the ads, some were SO weird and dated, and some would horrify people if they ran today.

One of my favorite commercials was a Bob Dole one from 1996 called The Threat. Very, very funny.
And Kerry did pretty good tonight.

Wesley Clark has improved quite a bit.
I couldn't disagree more. At certain points he had me thinking, "THIS is a Democrat I would vote for," but he has turned into a real partisan hack.
The attempt to kill Roosevelt is an awesome story. (All Long Islanders are born with Roosevelt admiration implanted in their skull) Roosevelt is shot in the chest while making his third run for President with the Progressive Party. His speech (folded several times) as well as his glasses case were so thick that the bullet only gave him a somewhat severe wound, but caused no real damage. Roosevelt gave his speech anyway, until he passed out from loss of blood approximately 40 minutes later.

I like how Kerry makes this entirely unfactual, dumb accusation:
I will have a Vice President who will not conduct secret meetings with polluters to rewrite our environmental laws.
and then has the nerve to say:
I want to address these next words directly to President George W. Bush: In the weeks ahead, let's be optimists, not just opponents. Let's build unity in the American family, not angry division.
What a freakin tool. And this is supposed to be the "progressive" party and the party that looks to the future? Kerry bought up 'Nam at least 5 times in that speech, as did almost every dope that came up there...
The biggest kick in the pants at least for people in DC that want statehood is Eleanor Holmes Norton, who helped write the first platform in a long long time that doesnt have a provision for DC Statehood in it...

yes he will. that's what vice presidents are for, secret dirty meetings. wither it's with oil companies, selling rocket technology to the chinese, or meeting with rebels in Nicaragua.

Gotta make it look good for TV!
I did not watch CNN last night, but in case you have not heard, apparently the DNC Convention Director Don Mischer's stage instructions went out over the air live after Kerry finished his (awesome) speech.
Here is what went out over the air:
'Go balloons, go balloons! Go balloons! I don't see anything happening. Go balloons! Go balloons! Go balloons! Standby confetti. Keep coming, balloons. More balloons. Bring it- balloons, balloons, balloons! We want balloons, tons of them. Bring them down. Let them all come. No confetti. No confetti yet.
'No confetti. All right, go balloons, go balloons. We need more balloons. All balloons! All balloons! Keep going! Come on, guys, lets move it. Jesus! We need more balloons. I want all balloons to go, goddammit. Go confetti. Go confetti. More confetti. I want more balloons. What's happening to the balloons? We need more balloons.
'We need all of them coming down. Go balloons- balloons? What's happening balloons? There's not enough coming down! All balloons, what the hell! There's nothing falling! What the fuck are you guys doing up there? We want more balloons coming down, more balloons. More balloons. More balloons'...
Hilarious!
In related news, George W. Bush cancelled the balloons for his speech because god told him angles will actually float down from the ceiling bathed in light and gospel music.

I think it's clear Kerry was referring to the outrageously negative ads the Republicans have been running in this election. What the hell does that have to do with his 'Nam service, or the party being "progressive?"

I was trying to make another point...i should've used better transitional phrasing...
Its obvious he was going after the negative ads the Republicans have been running, but my beef is that he asked to keep the campaign civil after he made a completely unfounded accusation about Cheney....

I think that the polluters he was referring to in the speech were the CEOs or various major energy corporations who were brought in to help Cheney create his energy policy. We don't know who they are (though we've tried to find out) but the result has been a complete gutting of the US environmental laws of the past generation.
