So I thought my week was really bad when I found out that the star RB of my favorite team retired on Sunday. Little did I know, the week would only get worse. I took the day off from work today because my daughter had a doctor's appointment. When I came home, I had a voice mail from work. I called to see what was up, and I got fired. Apparently, I used the internet at work too much and I was terminated with no warning. The URL's sited as being the largest pieces of my abuse of the system were ronfez.net & yahoo's fantasy baseball. What the fuck am I gonna do now? My wife wants to kill me.

Seriously, some guys where I work have "illegal" net access, and they are downloading stuff and watching videos and offensive stuff, and I keep telling them to quit it, that the IT guys can tell when they are abusing it but they dont listen. But some day, it will catch up with them. Id suggect to not go on the internet at work, if you really are not suppose to be on there.
Unless you have some way of appealing the decision to fire you, I would call them and ask for a second chance. Use your previous work as an example if your effective or whatever. But if they have a corporate policy... I dont think you have a legal leg to stand on. Good luck!

People are constantly on the internet here at work. I'm just as guilty. I've been playing online poker alot. I know some weird guy here got fired for looking at porn at work. Nobody has ever said anything to me, mainly, because, I think I get my work done and keep the clients happy, for the most part. I start a new job next week. I'll have to be very good there.

So true, Mojo. I used to get caught on a regular basis surfing, not working. I have definitly cut down some, but am still guilty. I told my boss flat out I would cut it out. I also said to him I wish he had a bell around his neck, like a cat, so I know when he's coming. He chuckled and said cut the shit.

I am able to get away with a bit more than the other guys, since I am system administrator, and I have the network set so only I can view server activity.

And Brown, I would seriously ask for one more chance, and promise to be a good boy. If my wife found out I lost my job due to surf-slacking, I would be sleeping in the garage.

And that's usually what's required in this day of lawsuits over unfair dismissal.

The Dept. of labor can advise you further, and I don't know how much you care about this job, but it may be yours to keep if you decide to argue the point.

Technically, I got fired for internet usage, not because of this site. This site's name was noted in the discusion of my termination, but not sited as the specific cause of it. Why the fuck wouldn't I come here to vent? I'm not getting monitored & subsequently punished for internet usage at home. As much as it sucks for me, I see the humor of the situation and thought I should share it with the board.
Luckily, after some time to clear her head, my wife sees how ridiculous the situation is, and has focused her anger on my old company instead of me. While I appreciate where your disbelief comes from, by all means, feel free to swing by my place, and you can confirm the unemployment of my ass (w/ my 3 most recent pay stubs if neccessary). However, employees can take their former company to court for discriminatory (where they are treated differently for any reason other than work production) firing and there has been cases where the companies have been forced to pay severence. I'm not planning to go down any legal avenues with my former company, as I don't expect to be able to get my job back, or a severance package. I'm just accepting the situation, and hoping that a new opportunity will present itself to me in a timely fashion. I think it sucks that they didn't attempt to talk to me about the problem before such a rash reaction, but that was their prerogative. What's gonna suck is going there tomorrow to pick up my personal things. I haven't been on a walk of shame since I was a teenager, and I'm not looking forward to it.


Edit: Things are looking up. My daughter's medical bill was an error on the part of the company. They filed the claim incorrectly. The whole bill is covered. Now I just need Ricky Williams to call me up and say he's coming back to the Dolphins and hiring me as his personal assistant.

BrownTown, I'm a little skeptical of your story too. You had absolutely no warning about this? You were never written up once? You were a good employee that the company just turned on because you were playing fantasy baseball and coming here? C'mon. From an HR standpoint, companies don't just up and fire salaried employees for something like that because it would cut into productivity and take too long to replace another once. At-will state or not...

I also find it weird that they have software that can track what sites you go to, but doesn't have software to lock you out of sites.

The 25K thing also makes me wonder. Obviously, you had to know the 25K thing was a mistake. It had to be. You don't go in for x-rays or something like that and get charged 25K. So why did you post that, logically knowing it had to be a mistake, trying to garner sympathy from this board?

From a logic standpoint, there's too many holes here.

I'm totally shocked by all the doubters out there. I really wish my stories were bullshit, but unfortunately that's not the case. Let me see if I can respond (though I'm sure I'll be advised of all the "holes" in my story).

1. My job - I was never warned about internet usage. I was never written up once. But the thing was, I'd only been at the company for a short time (3 1/2 months). I'm supposing they're taking my infraction at the relative beginning of my employment as a violation of probabtion of sorts. Allow me to say again, I have no one but myself to blame for this. I was the one that fucked around on the internet durring working hours. My company wasn't stupid for terminating me, just a bit quick with their decision, and a bit unprofessional in the way they chose to deliver it. I'm not looking for sympathy. I just thought that since ronfez.net had a place in the story (a small place, but a place nonetheless), it'd be appropriate to share that story here. I didn't realize it be a problem for me to share it without 3 sources validating the truthfulness of my post.

2. My daughter - When my girl was born at the beginning of May she suffered from complications related to <a href="http://kidshealth.org/parent/medical/lungs/meconium.html">MAS</a> and had to be put on a lung bypass machine called <a href="http://www.chclibrary.org/micromed/00047650.html">ECMO</a>. I'd show you a picture of the scar in the side of my daughter's neck from her cannula, but I'm sure you'd be quick to let me know how I could've done that with photoshop. The billing surprise was not the enormity of the cost, but the lack of coverage by my insurance (the $25,200 bill was the balance after only a $10,000 credit from my insurance when I was led to believe the entire procedure was covered). As it turns out, the claim was incorrectly filed as Out-of-network, thus explaining the unexpected bill which has since been corrected. The fact is, I've already been screwed once by Oxford on something that I was originally was led to believe would be covered (I'm currently paying $200/month out of pocket for a <a href="http://www.anandic.ch/docs/vollbreite.asp?id=29008&sp=E&m1=25162&m2=25195&m3=28202&m4=29008&m5=&domid=1053">Pulsox Monitor</a> because my policy lacks a Durable Medical Equipment clause), so as far as i was concerned this new bill was totally plausible.
