What do these signs mean? (see below), I'm not talking about their geographical locations, but rather what are the differences, as in which is a highway, which is a route, expressway, etc.

I take this one to be a State Route sign.

Actually the first one is also a Federal Road--like Route 1 or Route 66. Predates Interstates (which weren't created until the 50's) and referred to as US route et....

The last batch could be state or even county roads. I know a lot of states have circles or squares, but some state have the outline of the state (the more square states, obviously). And the last 2 do seem to be county roads, maybe in PA?

In order, US Route, Interstate, State Route, and County Route.

The <a href="http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/signs/results.cfm?type=all"> Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices </a>has more information than you can shake a delineation marker at. There are standards for some signs you hope you'll never see, like MAINTAIN TOP SAFE SPEED ...
