I am starting to plan my birthday bash-o-rama for this year and i need to know how everyone feels about a certain date. there would be no point in planning something for a day that no one will show up for so i decided to post this pre-planning thread.
As some of you know my birthday is on Sept 9th, it falls on a Thursday this year. I was hoping to have the "party" on saturday but that would be the 11th. I was wondering for those of you who would want to go to this how you feel about going out and drinking in the city on sept 11th. i know the date hits home more for some more than others so just reply to tell me where you stand on this so i know which date to plan. thanks.

Well Amy...I think you should hold it that Saturday. I think you are nice to consider what some people might think about you having your birthday party on Sept. 11th but I do not think you will be soiling the memories of those people who lost their lives because YOU are choosing to celebrate your life at it is. In fact I think it would be appropriate. It shows that while we cannot forget the past, that does not mean we cannot enjoy the present.
Go have your party...with no regrets.
And HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY! Go drink your ass off....again.

It's not like you're "celebrating" 9/11 or anything. It's YOUR brithday, and a celebration of life.
DO IT TO IT!

No worries. 'That' date happens to fall on a saturday; and that might suck if it was a wedding, but its a party. Go for it.

I think you people are missing the point of her question. I don't think it's a guilt issue. She's not saying that SHE would particularly have a problem with it... But she's concerned that SOME people might. Notice she said:
I know the date hits home for some more than others so just reply to tell me where you stand on this so i know which date to plan
For a lot of people, this is a day of mourning. It's a day where some people lost a friend, or even several friends. And those people probably wouldn't be down to go to her party on a day like that. I think that's why this question concerns her.

Then those people don't go.
Problem solved. It's HER birthday.
Everyone is going to deal with that day differently. I still think plenty of people would show up specifically BECAUSE of how that day hits them. Think of the wake after a funeral...I don't know about other people, but in both of my families, they're very much in the "let's celebrate the fuck out life, IN YOUR FACE, DEATH!!!"-kind of celebration.
Studies in contrasts.

I was in a bar in Manhattan last Sept 11th. And everyone in there was there to mourn and remember friends and family that were lost. It wasn't set up that way. Me and my friend went out for that reason too. But it was rather quiet as far as bars go. If a bunch of people had come in yelling and screaming and really tearing it up, some people may have been upset. Just something else to consider.
Happy Birthday by the way!

Yeah, but what if she's friends with those people and she wants them to be there?
Dude, she can't change when her birthday is! It's the 9th, and the closest Saturday is 9/11. It just happens to be that way. If people feel they can't leave the house or celebrate ANYTHING, that's their decision. I'm sure plenty of people would still show up, and those that did wouldn't be doing anything wrong in wanting to celebrate a birthday.

Which reminds me, I forgot when your birthday was and wanted to send some Phillies tickets your way. Do it whenever. Yes, the 11th is a memorial sort of day but it is the closest to your birthday. Maybe the weekend before your birthday would work as well. I always enjoyed the party as a lead into the birthday a few days away as opposed to the party after the fact.

That reminds me. My 21st Birthday happened while in in Australia. The drinking age was 18 over there, so I had been drinking for months, legally, when I turned.
That and it was a monday night, so it was this real low key deal. But still pretty cool.

Does anybody have any ideas on where we could have a party for Amy? A bar, club, or somewhere where boardfolk could get together and celebrate? I'm sure we could go to Bar 9 or somewhere else, but if anyone has suggestions for other places to do this it would be great. Of course it would also be best to have it somewhere within close enough proximity that people on the board could go to.

NYC, NJ or LI??
does she want a bar scence, club or something a little different. We could always go to Dave and busters in the mall (i think on the NJ/NY border). There is a bar and food there, and a lot of shit to do.
in NYC, there is just to much to decide with out more information. I had my 21st bday at Lot 61.
In NYC, Tavaru was always fun for me and my friends. It is on 3rd ave between 12th and 20th. Somewhere in there. I have not been there in 2 years, so it may have changed. but the few times I have went were all good.
There is this place in Chelsea called kanvas that was good.
I also have been going to proof for a long time. it is kind of hard to get into, but good once you are in there. Kind of snobby sometimes depending on the crowd that night.
There is a place called the Big Easy that is a Mardi Gras style bar.
Also, always a good time, is (the name is escaping me now but I can see it) I think Bowery Bar. I am not 100% sure, once my friend writes me an email back I will let you all know.

i would prefer a bar in NYC. seems like a central location for everyone. im not really into the whole club thing so id like to stay as much away freom that as possible.
i want a place where we could all relax and hang out....kinda like a bar 9 feel but without the cat piss. if anyone has any suggestions for a bar in the city that would be great, i was given a website from a good friend of mine that i will browse to see if i like any of the bars listed there.
part of me does wanna go back to bar 9 just to shove my ID in the bouncers facce and say "can we dance wit yo dates?" ((inside joke))

St. Marks PL. has a few good bars that are kinda loungy. St. Marks Ale house is a good place. Its on the corner of St. Marks and 3rd Ave. Has benches, booths, food is served, over 10 different types of beer on tap, and once it hits about 11-12 at night the crowd all of a sudden dissapears. Its like a curfew for them or something....so you get practically the place to yourself. Plus my pal Brandi works there so she's always generous with the buybacks.
