What is the difference between these two precious metals? Is it two different names for the same thing?

Thanx ADF; if you take a look at the Table:

Platinum = Element 78

White Gold = Element 79; with some Element 47, 46, 28, and even some 78

Platnium is also much more rare, thus making it more expensive.

white gold will "tarnish" meaning after a while the yellow elements will discolor the white

gold is naturally meant to be yellow

platinum is more durable

if you compare a gold wedding band to a platinum wedding band - the gold will have more scratches, dents, etc

Pure gold, 24kt, is VERY soft. A pure gold ring or chain will easily dent.

You should get Titanium. Much cooler metal. You'll impress everyone with your knowledge of materials!
<img src="http://www.titaniumcommitment.com/pix/facia2.jpg">
When polished they look like white gold or platinum but much stronger and lighter:

http://www.titaniumcommitment.com has a bunch of cool ones. They also sell Tungsten rings:

When I was in highschool and in metal shop, my teacher had a friend that worked for Grumman and he would get us scrap titanium. I got this hunk that was from the landing gear of a F16 and I made a ring out of it on a vertical milling machine as a project and won several prizes for it. I kept it in my glove compartment for many years and it was eventally stolen when some dirt bag broke into my car. I had the inscription Ti22 inscribed on it.

Sr71; that was simultaneously the coolest and saddest post ive read. I was so psyched, and then, boom, stolen.

So cool about making the ring though.

Instead of a wedding ring i would like a downpayment put on our future house.

Put a crackerjack ring on my finger and a downpayment on a house and i'll be the happiest woman in the world.

And they ask me why I love Jersey girls... ;)

I got no time for the corner boys
Down in the street making all that noise
Or the girls out on the avenue
`cause tonight I wanna be with you
Tonight I'm gonna take that ride
Across the river to the jersey side
Take my baby to the carnival
And I'll take her on all the rides

`cause down the shore everything's all right
You and your baby on a saturday night
You know all my dreams come true
When I'm walking down the street with you

Sha la la la la la la
Sha la la la la la la la la
Sha la la la la la la
Sha la la la I'm in love with a jersey girl

You know she thrills me with all her charms
When I'm wrapped up in my baby's arms
My little girl gives me everything
I know that some day she'll wear my ring
So don't bother me man I ain't got no time
I'm on my way to see that girl of mine
`cause nothing matters in this whole wide world
When you're in love with a jersey girl

Sha la la la...

I see you on the street and you look so tired
I know that job you got leaves you so uninspired
When I come by to take you out to eat
You're lyin' all dressed up on the bed baby fast asleep
Go in the bathroom and put your makeup on
We're gonna take that little brat of yours and drop her off at your mom's
I know a place where the dancing's free
Now baby won't you come with me
`cause down the shore everything's all right
You and your baby on a saturday night
Nothing matters in this whole wide world
When you're in love with a jersey girl

I am saving like crazy for a house now. It seems like every 1000 i save, the price goes up 4000 more. its insane. I think I am going to wait it out and hope this bubble burst like the stock market a few years ago. I really can not comprehend how all these people afford these 500-600 thousand dollar houses. what the hell do the do for a living?

As for an engagement ring, when my grandmother died she left me her 2 ct. diamond ring to be used for whatever I want. I do not think I will use it for an engagement ring. I would either sell it and use to money towards to ring, or get it cut into side stones.

i heard platinum can't be buffed and restored like white gold can...

thats what my jeweler told me when i bought missy's ring...

and it was more expensive so it wasn't like he was trying to sell me white gold to make more money

with platinum it would take a long time and very hard wear for it to start to get scratched ...instead of being buffed it is RHODIUM dipped (like a liquid buffing of sorts) it has very easy maintanance
