Ok so Mojo asked this question about music on XM in the other thread, but my response would have been buried in 100 posts of drama.
I had my dad's car for a couple of days and he has XM. This was about 6 months ago, and they've since added 2 additional stations that to which I would have listened. I spent a lot of time with the Fred channel, which is 'classic alternative'--each station has it's own website on xmradio.com and they list what you might hear. Fred currently lists:
The Cure - Close To Me
Psychedelic Furs -The Ghost In You
The Smiths - This Charming Man
The Clash - Straight To Hell
Depeche Mode - Tora Tora Tora
English Beat - Mirror In The Bathroom
Siouxsie & The Banshees - Cities In Dust
The Jam - Town Called Malice
Echo & The Bunnymen - Dancing Horses
Public Image LTD. - Rise
Of course there is a 'College' station and a Ethyl, which is bascially like your HFS or DC101 (I stayed pretty far from that station). I know Fred used to have a Sunday night show my dad loved that was early punk stuff from the late 70's and early 80's. But they started a new channel that is 'punk' so I don't think that even exists anymore. But all the stations have little shows occasionally.
Occasionally I would jump up to the hip hop channels (i'm not that big a fan, but the old-school station and the uncensored stations were pretty damn cool).
Everything else I pretty much stayed away from.
Edit: I forgot one point. I can't even remember which station I was listening to, but they played a song from You Am I, one of my most favorite Australian bands. They're pretty ridiculous and don't really have a chance of ever being played on the mainstream radio. Well after they played the DJ came on, saying the name and band, telling a short story about how Silverchair got their name from a You Am I song. Then he got a bit emotional and said that it was great that he could play songs from bands like this, that he never got to do while in mainstream radio. It was pretty cool, he seemed to care.
