His membership in the party is an aberration. I'm not sure how it works, but I think the party should revoke his membership if they can. I'm sure they will go out of their way to distance themselves from this idiot in every way possible.

How does that work? Because he's no longer an active member of the Klan, it means he doesn't have ANY of those feelings at all anymore. It amazes me how Democrats will go to no ends to defend Byrd. Well, the way I heard it, the reason he joined was because where he grew up, you couldn't get a job in public service unless you were a member, at least in name. They controlled all of the local government stuff, and liked to help their own.

As one of the old people on the Board I occasionally feel compelled to throw history factoids at you youngins. This stuff happens on regular intervals; I don't think it means that any overt "racial warriors" will get elected to a real office anytime soon, but I do think it proves that there is a significant fraction of the population that "still don't like uppity coloreds" regardless of how much the rest of us want to be past the race issue.

Oh yeah, the factoid: in 1990 and 1991, a guy named David Duke, at the time a former Grand Wizard of the KKK and founder of the National Association for the Advancement of White People, was the Republician nominee for a US Senate seat and governor (respectively) of Louisiana. Although he lost the elections, in both races he won between 55 to 60% of the white vote.

Now I can personally attest it is very easy to get liquored up and do stupid things on Bourbon St. but I've never been that drunk...
