Premium brands were 2 bucks a pack, generic anywhere from $1.30 to $1.50. I remember being 13, getting my $5 allowance on a Friday night, buying a pack of smokes then giving the remains to my friend's neighbor to drive down to Boogie Town to get a couple of 40's or a six of Old Milwaukee. Or the old standby was to eat a bag of chips for lunch every day during the week and save the change for the Friday/Saturday night revels. Ah well, you can't go back again.
Oh man, any kids I have are getting locked in trunks until they're 25.

Most places were about $1.25, but at a deli by my house, for $1.50 you got a pack of smokes and a free lighter.

i always say, "i'll quit if they go up to ____", but every time they go up in price, i keep buying.
i'm paying about $5 now, cuz i get the buy-2-get-1-free packs.
there's talk about raising them to $9 in ny, at which point i'll probably seek out a black-market alternative.

They were about 85 cents in NY when I 16. My Dad owned a bowling alley so we used to grab packs from there. Once they went above 2.00 he started locking them up. By the late 90's he stopped selling them altogether. It wasn't worth the hassle anymore. I'd still get the Generics (Alpine or Basic) for about 1.85 around that time. I finally decided to quit about 6-7 years ago. I can't imagine paying 5.50 or 6.00 a pack, not to mention 7.00 or 8.00 after the tax increase this summer... Yeesh!

When I smoked, which was in the mid '90s, smokes were about $1.50 a pack, as I remember. Part of the reason for this was that Kentucky hadn't yet raised its cig tax, which was about 1 cent a pack at the time. That was probably insanely low, but, hey, cheap smokes for me, and the guys driving down from Ohio and going back with a trunk full of cigs.

Free. They used to just set them out in nice displays on the counter for underage kids to take at their leisure. At least, that's the way we saw it. If I had to pay, they were about 2bucks with a poorly scribbled note from my "dad" saying that he sent me to get his cigarettes because he was sick in bed or had a broken leg or some shit. :smoke:
1995 - Less than $2 for a pack of Camel Lights.
I remember thinking that each cigarette was about a dime. I also remember thinking that there are 20 cigarettes in a pack and 20 matches in a book, but that I never smoked a whole pack using exactly one book of matched to light them... still haven't.

My Grandfather used to send my dad to the drugstore at night after dinner for a cigarette and a match. He'd give my dad 5 cents, so he could get a piece of candy too.
The clerk would have an open pack of pall malls at the counter for anyone wanting a "loosey" instead of buying a pack.
I remember buying cartons of Marlboros at the PX for 8 bucks. And while stationed in Germany, you were issued a ration card to restrict your purchases to 4 cartons a month, so you wouldn't buy out the PX and sell them on the German black market.

$1.99. I used to find someone that was 18+, give then $10, and ask them to pick me up 3 packs and "keep the change." It worked out well for the both of us. Thank God I gave up smoking in college. My loans would be 2x as much if I was still smoking.

Certain places in Detroit had premium brands for 75 cents, though the suburb price was usually just under a dollar. However, I started because a chick in my dorm used to always have cartons of Virginia Slims and would kick me packs for free, so I had a good 6 months of freebies before I felt the sting of having to steal quarters from my roommate to buy packs.
In those 6 months of VS's I developed a nice pair of breasts.
