This doesn't just happen in my neighborhood, I'm sure it happens around the country and I think this is a big issue not looked at. If this shouldn't be in this forum, my bad:

I live in the Elmhurst/Jackson Heights area of Queens. I've lived here for 20 of my 25 years alive (5 years I was a school in Pa and spent a year wroking in PA). I applied for a job in a local videogames store not too far from my house, and when I went for the interview, they asked if I spoke Spanish. I said no, and that I never really had to speak Spanish in the entire time I've lived in this neighborhood. He told me I would have gotten the job but he can't offer it to me because I only spoke English. After he said this I told him why he has this requirement since I don't think it's right to have such a requirement. He said that although many of the customers do speak English, they are more comfortable speaking Spanish and they must comply. I told him that I feel that this is a racist and descriminatory practice and stormed out.

Now, I ask this; Why is this allowed? If I was to open up a store in a predominatly White neighborhood and required all Spanish-speaking emplyees to speak English, I would be boycotted and have a complete shitstorm around me for having the same policy as this store had that made me not get the job

yeah I know the world is not fair, and I'm bitching over nothing probably, but I see this done at most, if not, all businesses in my neighborhood and I feel that it should be considered illegal

I think speaking Spanish counts as a skill.

i feel it should be a requirement for all people living in the US to learn to speak english... the reality is it will never happen and it looks like Spanish is the dominant 'other language'...

it's gonna be a problem for a long time to come. maybe a bunch of lawsuits can be won and it will create laws to require the english language in all employment in the US

No you would'nt. Requiring employees to speak English is a perfectly legitimate requirement for an employer and is in effect in probably 98% of all jobs in this country. And the other 2% you probably would never even want.

Lifted from my own blog:

May 14, 2004
I got a phone call that woke me up as to how the
world really works. Actually this story starts last week. Last week someone from N.O.B.L.E. I was very busy at the moment, meeting with the new DFSD. She, the woman from NOBLE, asked if I was aware that I was not selected for the Internal Afairs job for TSA. I said yes I knew. Then she asked me something else, I don't know what because I was talking to someone else. So I just said "Sure sure, yes." Then hung up.

So yesterday, I got back to my desk at about 5:30pm. I checked my messages. I only had one. It was from the Office of Civil Rights. At first I thought this was in refrence to a case I had worked involving an ex-IRS agent. He had threated to call the ACLU for percieved double jeopardy issues. It turns out that the Office of Civil Rights wanted to defend me for not getting the IA position. She continued that she got my name from NOBLE. The converstaion continued as such:

TS:"Well, there's a problem. I'm not black."
OCR:"What?"
TS:"No. I'm a white guy. Irish. I'm a member of the Emerald Society, if that matters."
OCR:"Oh. I don't know what to say." she chuckled a bit "Exuse me for laughing."
TS:"No, you should laugh, this is kinda funny. There's a guy sitting next to me laughing his ass off."
OCR:"Oh...hmm...Well, are you at least an honorary black man?"
TS:"Nope. Not even an honorary one. How did you get my name?
OCR:"From NOBLE. Let me check, you spell your name S-E-E-R-Y?"
TS:"Yep.
OCR:"Well, I'm sorry for the mix up. I'll let them know.
TS:"Ok. Thank you"

and I hung up. I don't know why I thanked her, but she was very polite on the phone. What kept me laughing is "...are you at least an honorary black man?" What the hell does that mean? How does that happen? is there some secret hand shake you have to learn, pay your dues then you're in?

But what started to bug me was the thought that, they only called because they thought I was black. I've put in for jobs before, no one ever called to defend me. But here' an office of people in power looking to jump to my rescure, only because they thought I was black.

Draw from that whatever conclusion you want.

Evil Pete I hear what yer saying coz with teaching its definately a been there; couldnt do that situation.

Two outta my first five interviews for my first full-time high school gig; the first question was did I hold NJ DOE Teacher of Science Certification; and the second was if I spoke Spanish. My 'no' on the second Q essentially ended those two interviews, even if they went on for a bit.

Not sure on the legalities of requiring, but check some "Teacher" ads in the Help wantd section, and they straight out and say they want bilingual people.

OK I can understand it for a Spanish Teacher, but...

Well this is just another illustration of how we white people are shit on. Think about it when you think of a white guy you think of an idiot. White guys are portrayed as idiots. On tv there isnt one positive male white role model so everyone starts to think badly about white people. But as a white male if I were to say something about a black dude I'd be labeled a racist or if I said something about someone who was gay I'd be homophobe but they could say whatever they want about me and get away with it. It's going to get to a point where some white guy somewhere is going to get very pissed and just say I'm not going to take it anymore.....and the day that happens watch out

I may go to Rider but I'll always be Marist Mike. Maria Sharapova is the future mother of my children.

I'm sure you'd gladly change places with a minority, right?

I'd like to interject with the idea that "reverse discrimination" does not exist.

It's just discrimination.

The fact that it's not white people doing it to non-white people, doesn't make it a new term.
