two friends and my self were having a discussion about metallica.
one says he won't listen to them at all anymore because they sold out, even though he used to play Kill 'em All - ... and justice for all at least once a day.
i still listen to those albums, but i can't listen to the black album because i've heard those song 10 million times in the span of a year for each single. i still think it's a great album, but it's been played out ( and i actually have that same problem with EVERY nirvana song. i still love, but i can't listen to em anymore at all.)
but i say load was the sellout point with no return, too much of an artistic change at once.
i think all the albums afterward were good albums, if they weren't metallica.
so my question is when do you think a band jumps from being Played out to sold out?
every musician plays for love, otherwise they wouldn't be a musician. but most every musician hopes for a hit single. so that they can make a living (or really good living) at what they love.

Umm... I think this may be where your argument strays.

classifying JT and BS as 'musicians' strays even further.

I agree. The black album wasn't a sell-out, it was a natural progression of their sound that happened to become popular. Load was created to be a more radio friendly sound, going as far as to hire Bob Rock to produce it.

unfortunately, bob rock wasn't the killer influence on it.
he produced the black album as well and that was good.
what killed it is, if you look at the writing credits, on all the great albums it's Ulrich, Hetfield and Mustaine, and Burton.
Rarely do you ever see Hammets name on the greats.
Load and Reload were written mostly by Newstead and Hammet. AWFUL!

Bob Rock did indeed do a kick ass job on the Black Album; and it is so overplayed; not now, its just that I think I played 'Sad But True' at least a bazillion and three times as my 'wake up' music or whatever. That groove still slays me.
He also put the best sounding Motley album out: Dr. Feelgood. The title track shows what Tommy Lee could do when he let go of his dick; that's a drum groove that just chugs like a fucking steamroller. And what a live show that was, the original four, lean and mean.

Metallica today? Hey it's 40-something multi-millionaires, compared to the teens Megaforce signed. Different worlds, different motivation for the music. How would a 'seek and destroy' come off today? Simplistic? Pop Sounding?
I plead ignorance coz the Black album was the last one that held any real interest. I've gone backwards, checking out the earlier stuff, and there's some Gold to be mined there.

And yet Newstead left because he felt Metallica didn't rock hard enough anymore.

I wish I could find the Lars quote. I think it was in Modern Drummer mag.
To paraphrase:
Metallica used to suck. We didnt write SONGS...we wrote PARTS. A live show was nothing but a mental test to see if we could successfully get from one section to the other without fucking it up. We we're sooo young. ---END
I agree with him. Some of those old records really do sound random and disjointed. I wish there was a record that blended the vibe of the early records with the quality of BLACK.

and i think he's an asshole, and a savior for metallica at the same time. a decent bassist left (Newstead) and a Phenomenal bassist joined. don't judge St. Anger on bass lines though he didn't play on em, Bob Cock did.
Trujillo for those who don't know was in Suicidal Tendencies, laid down the funk in Infectious Grooves, and was Ozzy's touring bassist after Mike Inez left to join AIC.
