The pope said to be in failing health. May not last for much longer. This has been one of the most influential people the world has ever seen. I know he has problems with the current situation as far as the catholic church goes but he was very respected and revered by myself along with many other people. Those vestments have to weigh close to 50 lbs (with the hat). A man of his age and in his condition should not be wearing them. He should have his summer seersucker vestments on.

This is by far the best Pope in modern history. Let's pray for his safe trip home.

According to centuries-old tradition, the papal election will be handled entirely by the Sacred College of Cardinals.

The college is technically supposed to consist of a maximum of 120 cardinals, though Pope John Paul II has bent this rule by adding a few more (the current cardinal count is 135). Fifteen to 20 days after the pope's death, the cardinals will convene in the Sistine Chapel, in a secret meeting known as the conclave. There, they'll be handed strips of paper emblazoned with the Latin words "Eligo in summum pontificem"-I elect as supreme pontiff. Each cardinal will write down the name of the fellow cardinal he'd like to see elevated to pope and place the ballot in a chalice. (Although the name of any Catholic man can technically be submitted, cardinals, almost without exception, vote for other cardinals.) A cardinal is not supposed to vote for himself. And per a 1975 rule change made by Pope Paul VI, cardinals 80 years old or greater are barred from voting.

The votes will be tabulated by the camerlengo (currently Cardinal Eduardo Martinez Somalo of Spain), head of the college and the man who manages the pope's secular affairs. An assistant will then bind the ballots together with a needle and thread. A victor must receive more than two-thirds of the votes, so it's unlikely anything will be decided after the first round of ballots. If the vote is inconclusive, the ballots will be mixed together with straw and burned in the fireplace; the black smoke that issues forth signals to outside observers that the election is still ongoing.

if the cardinals are smart, they'd pick either an african or hispanic pope ... the church is really only growing/healthy in these respective countries ... picking another european will disenfranchise millions ...

plus, i wouldn't worry too much this pope .. he's been dying longer than hymen roth ...

But you have to remember that this pope not being ITALIAN was considered a huge change.

"This pope may not last much longer." I can't even imagine the strength of will that keeps this man going. He's the holy energizer bunny.....what afflicts him would have killed several hundred people years ago. Although I'm sure he gets the best in care.

I find it odd how John Paul II is now more of a joke (not to Catholics so much as to every one else). I bet if a former president, or movie star endured what the Pope has, he would be loved and revered by all. I for one find it inspiring that hes been able to withstand so much for so long. Most people in his position would have been dead 10-15 years ago.

as endearing as the first polish pope is, he has done a lot to retard the church's progress, and it's relations with a more modern, liberal western world ...

now i don't expect him (or his successor) to become pro-choice, but recent attacks on 'feminism,' and a refusal to redine women's roles (as well as married priests)within the church really hurts itself in the public eye ...

i realize the church is a private club that can define it own rules, but the catholic church needs a major overhaul that would blow vatican II away ... it would alienate the staunch traditionalists, but would create a heathy, vibrant church for our modern days ...
