When ever I'm playing CDs through my mixer I always adjust the channels' EQ to what I assume to be "rock" (off at 31Hz, off at 1KHz up a little at 16KHz (it's a three frequency EQ)). What I'm wondering is... is this necessary? Are the EQs adjusted accordingly when they're being recorded? Does this need to be done on a client-side basis or if I'm just wasting my time (why I even take time to adjust my EQ is beyond me... I have too much time on my hands).

HELP ME ORACLE!

EQ-ing is one of the most misunderstood things in audio. I'm finding that out now, often the hard way, in recording. Wow you record something with an EQ that sounded fine in headphones or small speakers and then you play it on a stereo and it's fucking Garbage. Ah, my first self-review of my music.

For listening? Hey whatever makes it sound Good to you. There are so may variables too that effect the treble, mids, and bass that have Nothing to do with the actual EQ; speaker size, placement, room size, how 'live' the room is, and a few dozen others. If you start to read magazines like Audiophile, you go insane.

In EQ-ing though, one good rule is to use the EQ to take away frequencies that are blocking you from hearing some other part of the mix, as oppsed to boosting that same thing you want to hear 'better'.

And 'better' = its totally subjective and up to you.

With a three band EQ like that? For me; first I'd take away a bit of the midrange. Mids are Mud. I do tend to add on the high end like you, I like to hear the air, the cymbals, etc. Bass? Yow that's subjective, some like it nice and tight, some want the Boom.

thanks mike, I knew I could count on you.

Usually when I play music I can't hear my mic channels that are at actually broadcasting "loader" (atleast according to my LED level displays). I guess I should adjust the EQ on my music channels accordingly. Thanks!
