Without a doubt.

OK, we have the aforementioned and geektastic "Batman Begins" coming out...

But ALSO Robert Rodriguez bringing Frank Miller's "Sin City" to the big screen, which I'm even MORE excited about. Rodriguez has worked hand in hand with Miller to get this done, and it's such a cool concept. First, it's done in three "segments," like "Pulp Fiction" was, to cover three of the graphic novels (The original series, "The Big Fat Kill," and "That Yellow Bastard"). Secondly, it's all in black & white, just like the great neo-noir look of the comics. And finally, it's mostly being shot entirely on a green/blue screen set, becase what they're going for is essentially the look of the comic book "coming alive." I haven't seen any clips yet, but the concept just sounds so cool and ballsy, that I can't wait to see it.

Oh, and Mickey Rourke is staring. ALL HAIL. The rest of the cast is pretty impressive, too...

Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Benicio Del Toro, Micahel Clarke Duncan, Josh Hartnett, Michael Madsen, Clive Owen, Elijah Wood, Bruce Willis...

Check this link out to see the movie posters, and you'll get a feel for the unique visual style they're going for with this movie. And, since all those big actresses are playing basically nothing but strippers and hookers, and Rodriguez is saying he's sticking to the comics as closely as possible, expect lots of A-level star trim on display.

http://www.thezreview.co.uk/comingsoon/s/sincity.htm

And just to top it all off, apparently "Watchmen" is now official, with Darren Arronofsky signed to direct, and John Cusack on to play the semi-retired, over-the-hill superhero character of Nite-Owl. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...

I don't even know how the fuck they can make a Watchman movie.

If they do make it, I hope to god they don't pull some stupid shit and change the ending just because the original ending doesn't score well with test audiences.

In addition to the above, 2005 should bring us:

Constantine (Feb. 11)
Elektra (Feb. 18)
Fantastic Four (July 1)
Iron Man (Nov.)
and Dr. Strange (no date yet)

Let's all go get in line now.

Doctor Manhattan

But ALSO Robert Rodriguez bringing Frank Miller's "Sin City" to the big screen

It will look good and have a good score but will still suck like all his films except "El Mariachi"

I'm surprised Antonio and Cheech aren't listed for this film.

Carla Gugino is listed. Damn, she's hot.

According to Aronofsky, they still have the same type of ending (Huge catastrophic event wreaks death and destruction, unites the world), but it won't be as "graphic" as the comic book version.

And the pirate story is out. It would have to be, unless they broke this up into a 12 part mini-series.

Going back and reading the series again, I think it would actually be one of the easiest series to translate to film...much more so than the more "power-packed" series like The Fantastic Four, or even Spider-Man. At its heart it's a murder mystery, plain and simple. And it's already self-contained. A lot of things CAN be stripped away, like the pirate story...and you won't have all the flashbacks to the earlier eras of superheroes...but the heart of the story is pretty easily translated to a 2+ hour film.

The pirate story can be pulled out and some of the flashbacks from the earlier era of superheroes can be pulled out but some are too important to hte story to be pulled out.
Now that I think about it, it might be better if they strung it out as a trilogy.

Now that I think about it, it might be better if they strung it out as a trilogy.

It's far too short a story to be a trilogy, or even two films.

Look at it this way...the key frame is the murder mystery of the Comedian's death. You NEED to start with that to get the film rolling right, and keep it focused. To include the bulk of the flashback material in film form and have it not be a mess, you'd have to set those scenes in chronological order, BEFORE the Comedian's murder. But Moore clearly wrote those to just be little "snippets"...to try and string them together and expand them to fill space before the Comedian's death would, IMO, kill the film.

The only really KEY things you need are Dr. Manhattan's origin (Which you can show during the talkshow scene when he "leaves" Earth), the attempted rape, and the government "shutting down" the super heroes. The rest can mentioned verbally, if at all. They're not essential if you establish the characters in the "present" strongly enough.

Yeah, him or Dafoe. Or even Crispin Glover...

I think it was the IMDB boards, but I remember reading someone mentioning Keanu Reeves as Dr. Manhattan, which I initially thought was retarded, but then when I thought about it, might be a perfect role for him. Playing "I think I know everything but I'm really completely clueless" is the one thing he's really good at.

Sorry about starting the Sin City thread. I didn't see Sin City mentioned in the title and went with it. (I do think it deserves it own thread, but maybe closer to release)

Friday's Variety reports that Chris Columbus intends to direct Universal's big-screen version of Marvel Comics' "Sub-Mariner."

Sub-Mariner is an underwater guy who both hates and rescues land-dwellers.

Columbus wrote "Reckless," "Gremlins," "Goonies," "Young Sherlock Holmes," "Only the Lonely," "Little Nemo," "Nine Months" and "Christmas With The Kranks."

He directed "Adventures in Babysitting," "Heartbreak Hotel," "Home Alone," "Mrs. Doubtfire," "Nine Months," "Stepmom," "Bicentennial Man" and the first two "Harry Potter" movies.

David Self, who authored the screenplay, also wrote "The Haunting," "Thirteen Days" and "Road to Perdition."

Marvel and Universal previously teamed on "Hulk."

From todays Variety...

Hot off a Golden Globe nom for her work in "Closer," Natalie Portman is in final negotiations to toplinetopline the Wachowski brothers' "V Is for Vendetta," for Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver.

An adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel of the same name, action-heavy script was penned by the "Matrix" scribes. Their longtime first assistant director James McTeigue will make his helming debut on the pic. The Wachowskis will produce "Vendetta" with Warners-based Silver.

"Vendetta" takes place in an alternate future in which Germany wins WWII and Great Britain becomes a fascist state. A terrorist freedom fighter known only as "V" begins a violent guerrilla campaign to destroy those who've succumbed to totalitarianism, and recruits a young woman he's rescued -- or possibly kidnapped --from the secret police to join him.

McTeigue recently wrapped duties as first a.d.a.d. on "Star Wars -- Episode III: Revenge of the Sith," where he worked closely with Portman. Actress also recently starred in the critically acclaimed "Garden State" for Fox SearchlightFox Searchlight and Miramax.

Before "Vendetta" can start shooting in Berlin, Portman will first need to wrapwrap up her work on"Free Zone," from Israeli helmer Amos Gitai ("11'09"01 -- September 11"). But insiders familiar with the studio's plans say the first week of March has already been carved out to start production, with a fall 2005 release planned.

from imdb

Based on the graphic novels "Sin City" (this was the first of all the stories and originally had no title, but Miller has since re-named it "The Hard Good-Bye"), "The Big Fat Kill" and "That Yellow Bastard", by Frank Miller. The infamous "opening footage" with Josh Hartnett and Marley Shelton is from the Sin City short-story "The Customer is Always Right" from the "Babe Wore Red" collection.

"V For Vendetta?"

One of the greatest books I've ever read.

How the fuck did they get an "action-heavy script" out of it?

*Sigh*

Actually, Paul Greengrass IS a fantastic director.

"Supremacy" was a damn good movie, and "Bloody Sunday" is hands-down one of the finest movies I've ever seen.

As for the writer...Jesus Christ.

Well, he DID write the two "X-Men" flicks, and those turned out to be two of the better comic book movies ever...so maybe the guy does alright as long as he's adapting comics.

At the same time, he's the voice of the "EA SPORTS...IT'S IN THE GAME" tagline.

Holy shit! Finally someone in Hollywood got some brains. That comic was awsome. I would definately love to see that one made.

I think FF will be really good. Seems to be good casting.
Some of these Marvel charachters need to be shown in other films.
I think if they were briefly introduced in the bigger hits like Xmen or Spiderman maybe people, who are not as knowlagible about comics like you and I, would be more interested in them. They did a great job with making the storyline for most of the Marvel comic movies easier for Joe Schmo to follow. Even The Punisher was not that bad of a script. (Considering it was following the Dolph Lunk-head version from 1990-whatever)
But if the Hulk can make money why not the FF right?
It is nice to see Hollywood finally tapping into the resouces and continuous storyline of comics.
Hell look at Spiderman...we already KNOW there is a 3rd movie and a script is not even being written yet.

Now if they only would make the Frank Miller Wolverine comic I would be in heaven.

That movie is already worthless.

Instead of making it a "naturally" fascist Britian like it is in the book, it's some world where the Nazis won WW2 and control the UK. So, yeah, apparently a "good" terrorist fighting against a British government that has evolved into fascism is too nasty for our delicate minds.

Way to cut the gut out of the story, assholes.

OSCAR NOMINEE THOMAS HADEN CHURCH CAST AS
THE NEW NEMESIS IN SONY PICTURES' AND MARVEL STUDIOS' "SPIDER-MAN 3"

Latest Adventure set to debut worldwide on May 4, 2007

CULVER CITY, CA March 22, 2005 - Thomas Haden Church, who was most recently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in "Sideways", has been cast as Spider-Man's new archenemy in the next chapter of the "Spider-Man" adventure, it was announced by director Sam Raimi and producers Laura Ziskin and Marvel Studios' Avi Arad.

"Spider-Man 3", which is scheduled for release on May 4, 2007, will reunite the successful team that was responsible for the first two blockbuster films. The franchise has grossed more than $1.5 billion in worldwide ticket sales and the new film will again reteam director Raimi, producers Ziskin and Arad, and actors Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Kirsten Dunst as M.J..

Production on "Spider-Man 3" is scheduled to begin early next year.

"In addition to the on-going relationship between Peter Parker and M.J., these films are driven by the great actors who have brought our villains to life," said Raimi. "Thomas Haden Church will be a fantastic and challenging new nemesis and we all look forward to working with him."

The identity of the new villain is being kept secret and while speculation is rampant about which character is being called into action, the studio will not comment on the casting beyond confirming Church.

Since his star-making role in "Sideways", Church has been in demand. The actor is voicing one of the characters in the upcoming animated film "Charlotte's Web", and he recently appeared in Columbia Pictures' "Spanglish". Church previously appeared in such other films as "George of the Jungle", "330 Miles to Graceland", and "Tombstone". In 2003, he also starred in, co-wrote and directed the comedy "Rolling Kansas". From 1990 to 1995, Church played Lowell Mather in the TV series "Wings".

Not likely. The Matrix sorta sank the movie talks years ago because the movie's plot was so similar to the early story arcs. Grant Morrison was not pleased when he saw that movie.

And if it was going to be the Lizard, wouldn't they use the guy who was already Curt Connors in 2?

<p>I'm naysaying the movie version of &quot;V For Vendetta&quot; BIG time.</p><p>It's obvious from the clips and stills I've seen and based on the casting that they actually intend to make V a &quot;real&quot; character...an action hero, if you will.&nbsp; This flies completely in the face of the original story, and what helped to make it so powerful...it's never clear if V is ever even actually real.&nbsp; He's more of a symbol, or maybe just a hallucination...or maybe there's hundreds of &quot;him.&quot;&nbsp; The point is, the book is ambiguous on this on purpose.&nbsp; It shows how the IDEA of V effects the people and country around him...not the person of V him/her/itself.</p><p>The book was also set in a world where Britian never entered into NATO or really the Cold War on a whole.&nbsp; A nuclear conflict between the Soviets and the US erupted (the book came out in and is set in the 80's), but the UK was spared since its lack of missiles made it strageically useless.&nbsp; The UK grows isolationist as conflicts rage in spots around the world, drawing in on itself, and becoming a neo-fascist state in its zest for protection/patriotism/nationalism...strong symbolism for for today.&nbsp; The filmmakers, however, pussied out completely on this part of the story and have made it a UK set in a world where the Nazis won WW2 and THAT'S how a fascist UK exists &quot;today.&quot;&nbsp; The main point of the original story was&nbsp; a warning...totalitarian Orwellian fascism CAN emerge from democracy given the right circumstances.&nbsp; The filmmakers have, in essence, cut the guts out of the story, so fuck this thing already.</p><p>And yeah, it's a comic, but damned if it is one of the best books I've ever read, period.&nbsp; A brilliant story, and a complete head-fuck.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Silver Surfer is/was hugely successful. During the 80ies, he was very high profile.&nbsp; He was in The Avengers (or maybe just an honorary member), he was always hangin' with The Fantastic Four (whenever Galactus would get hungry), and he had his own title.&nbsp; </p><p>I admit that he's not exactly a household name but then again....neither was Blade.&nbsp; Or Sin City. </p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Surfer was always one my faves.&nbsp; Ever since seeing the T100 in Terminator2, I've been looking forward to a Surfer movie.&nbsp; I think it'll rock...as long as they get a serious director.&nbsp; Not &quot;Pitof&quot; or whoever the hell they hired to direct Catwoman.&nbsp; </p><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v355/tucker71/fezident.jpg" border="0" /> &quot;WHATEVER YOU DO....DON'T CROSS THE STREAMS!!&quot;

<p><font color="#339999" size="2">At this point a Silver Surfer Movie isn't going to look good. CGI Silver Surfer will just look like a cartoon (Perhaps they should just do an actual cartoon and concentrate on a good story) or a live action Silver Surfer will look like a guy in silver paint, but not in a good way.</font></p><p><font color="#339999" size="2">But you'd think a Chrome Humanoid should be the easiest thing to do (The T-1000 from Terminator 2, was one of the first major modern CGI efforts, after the Water Face Thing from Abyss) So if they could actually animate a real character it would work, but then I think of Final Fantasy, the characters looked great until they moved.</font></p><p>&nbsp;<a href="http://www.xmradio.com/"><img src="http://scripts.cgispy.com/image.cgi?u=skw" border="0" /></a></p>

<p>I always thought Keanu Reeves would make a great Silver Surfer.&nbsp; </p><p>Also, when are they going to make The Infinity Gauntlet?&nbsp; That was an great little series that would be like the Lord of the Rings of comic book movies.&nbsp; </p><p><img src="http://rds.yahoo.com/S=96062883/K=infinity+gauntlet/v=2/SID=e/TID=I999_73/l=IVI/SIG=12oa8ga9u/EXP=1119638029/*-http%3A//www.game-revolution.com/chatter/mailbag/infinity_gauntlet.jpg" border="0" /></p>
