I've always heard stories from my uncles and other family memebers how poor they were growing up.

Now, we weren't rich but I don't think we were poor...I remember my mom saving Plaid stamps to get a new iron...I remember my dad taking on on a second job....I remember my mom taking up my old jeans so my brother , Mikey, could wear them....But I never remember starving...sure..alot of times , all we would eat was spaghetti or cheese and macaroni...on a good day , we would have hamburger...as time went on...the times got better!!!

Any memories from your childhood???

From the age of 16 through 20 I had to live in groups homes. It wasn't pleasant.

I grew up during the 70s and 80s. We lived in an affluent area of Long Island. We had no money. we went without electricity for an entire summer because my dad couldn't afford to pay the electric bill. I had two pairs of pants and two shirts. That's it. If I tore a pair of pants, my dad would slap a patch on them. Pretty embarrassing when I blew the ass out of a pair of flowered courderoys.

All I ever wanted was an Olympic-sized swimming pool of my very own. When my parents bought me one, it turns out I had to share it with the rest of the family. I was devasted. I'm throwing those bums in a home at the first sign senility.

I lived in the projects, ate big blocks of gvmt cheese, and my mom bought "No Frills" everything.

we were so poor we ate Underwood Deviled Ham...

there were 7 of us in a cold water flat and one bathroom. 4 of us slept in one bedroom and the oldest got his own room...

we couldn't use the microwave with the dryer or the fuse would blow and we had to go down 4 flights of stairs to the basement to reset it. then we would snake out the sewer line to the street ourselves when it backed up P U...

we would go down to my uncle's junk yard when we wanted a bike, and i loved the bikes we got... i got a purple one with a banana seat

we'd get the ''chopped ham' instead of the regular ham...

i can't say we were poor, there were people worse off that i knew.

My parents had me when they were 24 and 25, and my dad was just a cop then, and he wasn't making a whole lot of money, so those first few years were spent moving a lot, from very small apartments to even smaller apartments, or living with my parents parents, all in the Chicago area. After about 6 years of being a cop, and trying to join the Secret Service, my dad's application was flagged by the CIA and he went to work for them, and my parents were finally able to move into their own townhouse when they moved out here in '81.

Still, until I was about 10 or so (1989), I got a LOT of hand-me-down clothes from older cousins, much more than receiving any new clothes, and we very rarely ate out. Things were very tight the first decade of my life, but my parents fought very hard to make it and become what they are together, and always make sure my brother and I were well taken care of. Hell, I didn't have cable, or even a second TV, until I was about that age. That was also when we finally got a second car, and one that WASN'T used and beat to hell. So I guess around 1989 my dad finally "hit it big."

Let's just say I don't know either why they call it Hamburger Helper - it does taste just fine by itself.

i never considered my self poor, but my sister and i were raised by a single mother who never really made much and worked catering jobs to put us through cathloic school ...

i guess we were considered less than fortunate ...

right before thanksgiving in the 7th grade, i answered the dorr to find my principal and three classmates with a box of turkey and trimmings -- we were all caught off guard ...

we were put on a list of families that could use some holiday help; and since my mother had a different last name, my principal never made the connection ...

the principal were horrified and apologized endlessly to my mom for the embarrassment ... they changed the school policy after that to prevent taking kids to deliver the packages ...

Yeah, we where pretty poor. Had the "Bohacks Bombers" sneakers, that once, the sole came off, and my mom sowed it back on. We had no phone for a couple years, and went periodicaly without electric. My mom would run an extension cord to the neighbors so we could have a fridge. The patches on the pants was a must, but, it was kind of "hippie" like, and did not bother me (grew up in the late 60's/early 70's). Same thing with haircuts, they came once every six months or so. But you know what, you got by. My kids would DIE if they had to live like that.

I shucked it, and I shucked it, and I shucked it, i'm quite the mother shucker

Still, until I was about 10 or so (1989), I got a LOT of hand-me-down clothes from older cousins, much more than receiving any new clothes,

Me too! My early baby pictures I even believe I'm a boy because I had to wear my boy cousin's hand me down's.

My parents had just graduated college when they had me, my mom and dad were about to start law school together, then she got pregnant so they had to work her way through law school with me and they also adopted my 10 year old cousin when her mom died. We lived on the bottom floor of a house and didn't have much. Then they got divorced and my mom had to support me and my cousing by herself for a long time. We lived with my grandmother and in my aunt's house, then an apartment in Old Bridge which got broken into.

I had a great childhood but looking at how my parent's both grew up and went through I feel so spoiled now, but at least I really appreciate everything I have because of it.

Yeah, Aggie hit it EXACTLY. I'm so much more grateful for what I can have today because of how I had to live my childhood. My parents knew what they were doing...I see kids today as old as like 7 or 8 just flat-out SCREAMING if their parents won't buy them something, and it's pathetic. I can only remember back to when I was about 4 or 5, but I never even DREAMED of doing that.
