Last night in work i got a call around midnight, my wife was crying and i could hear my daughter Michele crying hysterically in the background. My other daughter was sleeping over at her cousins house so at first I got very concerned and thought something bad may have happened to my daughter who was with her cousin. As it turns out Michele had gotten a dwarf bunny about 2 1/2 weeks ago. It was the cutest little thing and it would hop and run around with our three cats either watching her or running after her, but they never hurt her. The bunny would try to suckle from them and they would start running and at times they would sit nose to nose sniffing each other.

It turns out they went to Smithville to shop and eat and when they got back last night the rabbit had passed away in her cage and Michele found it .

Have to say it was a big heartbreaker because i knew how much she loved that bunny and how hurt she was. They were always together and she treated it like it was her child.

Today was better and she bounced back. She cried a bit as we buried 'MilkyWay' in the backyard next to the grave of one of our cats that passed.

I think in a day or two she would be ready to look for a new bunny.

We followed all of the instructions on what to feed and what not to feed and she was drinking her water. So we're not sure why she passed.

Has anyone ever owned a dwarf bunny or rabbit?

No, Funk...never had a rabbit...But I feel for your daughter!!!!!

I think I wrote a thread a few years back about my Mom's dog, Peppy. He died on Christmas Eve, 1990. My mom had him for 18 years and boy...was he a good dog. My Mom loved him..

Anyway...me and my dad had to bury him on Christmas Day in Pelham Bay Park under his favorite tree. My mom still talks about him now and then...when you never miss miss your pets!!!!

Your daughter will be fine...get her another bunny!!!!!

No, but I did have a lizard with no toungue and an Anteater from Scarsdale who's nose hooked up at the end. Very stuffy, that anteater was.

Geez Sorry that is so Pet Semetary.

And I dont mean that in a joking way. That book continues to blow me away, perhaps his best, in terms of dealing with the subject of how people deal with death.

The Doc in the book is, well, an MD, so he sees the 'absoluteness' [weak word] of death, and can detach himself, sometimes. And his wife, who didn't deal with it well at all, and the daughter, dealing with it the way Kids deal.

Sad.

I'm sorry to hear that Funk. I know it can be really difficult for a child to lose a pet like that. I think you're doing the right thing by giving it a little time for the grieving to happen before you go and get her another one. Some kids will tell you that after they go through something like that, that they will not want another one of those kinds of pets though I've seen it enough to know that if you walk through the door one day with another one that most kids will just melt and run right to it.

you're right... on the night of the phonecall i had said that 'we could get a new rabbit' and she screamed out in tears "i don't want a new rabbit I want Milkyway" I immediately realized that was 'bad timing' but you're trying to somehow console her. Well guess where we're going in a few minutes? yup, looking for a new dwarf bunny...

i had a firebellied toad for a year and one day i came home from work and i looked into his tank and he wasnt there.i gently ran my fingers through the sand and i picked up all the lil caves and what not i had in there for him, no luck. i started freaking out, what could have happened to him? I waited a few days to see if he would turn up somewhere in the tank. i looked all over my room to see if he had gotten out even though i knew it was impossible. i had a stuffed ducky on the lid of the tank and that hadnt been moved. there was no explanation for his disappearance and it killed me that i didnt know what happened to him, took me a lil bit to get over it. it was my first pet i owned and tookl care of on my own, he was my son. i still carry his picture with me in my wallet and in a frame on my desk at work but i still havent found out what happened to him :(

even big kids cry when their pets are gone

i still tear when i am at the petstore and i see the lil toads hopping around, i dont want a new one right now....i want a shark!

Funk, I am so sorry. Tell Michele I know how she feels (No rabbit but I did have 2 dogs) That has to be one of the saddest stories on this board in recent memory. Having met Michele she is such a sweetheart, I really feel terrible. I hope she cheers up soon. Maybe you SHOULD get a dog or a cat, they do live alot longer.

Oh and fiesty.......

my mom killed my bunny whiskers-dumb ass put a steel cage on concrete in the garage

Do you mean she put the concrete block on top of the rabbits cage? If that is the case...not too bright!
Sorry cutie.

thanks for all the well wishes... i let Michele read the thread and she really appreciated them...

We went back to the pet store today and now we have 'two' new dwarf bunnies. Kristin came along and fell in love with a black bunny and Michele got a smokey gray one. They are a month or two older than her previous bunny and when we told the girl we dealt with today she said that the bunny that passed away was too small and should really not have been sold. Hopefully these will survive for a good while...

thanks again!

Im sorry for your daughters pain at the loss, hope everything works out. I have about 30 or so and they get out of hand. From what I know of them, they tend to have very senastive necks, and if you pick it up wrong and it tries to flip out of your hands, it can actually break its own neck.

Sorry to hear that Funk.

I had to bury a pet today. My mom's guinea pig died suddenly and unexpectedly this morning, after we had her three years. I dug the grave, made her a nice little shoebox coffin, and buried her in the garden.

Then I disinfected the cage, because unknown to my mom, her coworkers could tell that she was upset, and are going to buy her a new one tomorrow.
